presentation of the XT 660 Z Ténéré 2013

the very mention of the name Ténéré conjures up images of sand dunes, pebbles and adventure. More than 20 years ago, this name was closely associated with the Paris-Dakar Rally. Yamaha's XT range and rally-raids have a long history. In the civilian sector, it was the XTZ 660 Ténéré that kept the dream alive until the end of the 90s, although its performance was more in the road sector. But then the market changed, the trail bikes were squeezed out and mono bikes fell out of favor.

10 years on, the market still favours roadsters and machines with character. What a surprise, then, to discover that Yamaha has decided to revive the 660 Ténéré. How will the market respond? We're skeptical. But in terms of image, it's a knockout! You don't see this kind of adventurer very often. And yet, it can take you far away, in a setting quite different from our formatted environment. Let's head for the track, without the vibrators, but with rocks and dust.

The manufacturer is used to polishing its creations. And this XTZ '08 is a convincing example of the rally-raid spirit. All-track tires mounted on spoked rims, long-travel suspension, fork tubes protected by gussets (as in the good old days), saddle height the good old days), high seat height, "big mouth" fork head with double headlamp, fairing and trekking look - it's all there to cut a rug. All that's left to do is add a few accessories, such as panniers, an aluminum engine cover or handguards, to complete the package.

YAMAHA XTZ 660 TénéréWhile its appearance evokes the open spaces of the South, the XTZ will certainly be more accessible in terms of comfort, as befits the Ténéré philosophy, than in enduro or TT riding. Its large 22-liter fuel tank and weight of 183 kg keep it somewhat off the forest path; Corsican roads seem more appropriate.
Compared to the XT from which it derives, the Z gains an additional brake disc, a new, more complete instrument panel, and specific plastic covers for the frame, engine and fuel tank.
But it's hard to tell from a distance that it's an XT that serves as the basis, as the machine looks so completely new. Launching a machine of this type in today's market is a daring gamble... But no matter. Above all, the XTZ 660 Ténéré embodies a spirit, a smell of warm sand, and lets you get away from it all, whether in Paris, Tunis, Timbuktu or St-Pourçain-sur-Sioule.

it is strong when meme, a machine which makes between quillemet only 180 will be to move away from the roads and the TT and better on the roads of Corsica but lol and what about the big cow of GS and its 240 kg ??? bmw you grease the chain to be so eloquent towards a big heap of this kind?? A toy for those looking for a big mono or who have a bad back. I've also got a 1200 RT, better in protection and on freeways, but heavier and less cushioned. The Xtz is easy to ride as a duo and on cross-country roads. At a standstill, long legs a must. If I had to choose, I'd keep both!

it gives value for money, super maneuverable, economical 420 km with 1 full tank, very good protection of the bubble, good braking, the atypical noise of xt especially with 2 leovinc , only flaw for my taste, the seat too hard and not wide enough, otherwise the best in the trails and I know what I mean after having 3 dl 650 vstrom, and 2 xtx 660 supermotard . si yamaha mettait le moteur de la mt07 sur ce châssis avec 75 chevaux et un motuer peut gourmant, pour concurrencer la vearsys 650 ,yamaha pourrait peut-être reprendre une part de marché ,à ce prix cette moto mérite un cylindre de plus ,et probleme avec ce mono c'est qu'on est vite lassé ,à 130 klm /heure il n'ya plus de reserve pour doublé dommage ,j'ai eu 3 mono en 20 ans et a ce prix je prefere le drenier vearsys 650 super moto Rating : 2/5

French HORACE Model 2008
this is my 10th tamaha trail \'4 500 xt, 4 ténérés 600 a 660 xtz from 1992 and now this new ténéré which has 40 000 kmtres and has already done turkey and twice morocco and the track this machine is the fruit of a logical culmination of tamaha in trail robust, reliable. Admittedly, the engine isn't a thunderbolt, but it's good enough for cruising speed on our roads, which are full of tax agents behind their machines of all kinds.
Since I've been traveling with these different bikes, all of them have brought me back home, and this latest one is in the same spirit of reliability. It's been very well thought out, and you can see this in the many details: the workmanship is meticulous, the brakes are very powerful, and the engine is capable of taking on tracks that no BMW 1200gs could manage, as I've proved on several occasions.
Its weight is obviously a little high and its seat height is high, but it can be lowered by changing the shock absorber rods. Its air filter is very efficient in dusty environments, unlike its 600 and 660 ancestors.
Unfortunately, trail bikes are no longer the order of the day, and motorcyclists continue to buy machines that are completely unsuited to our current traffic and repressive conditions, and the adventure of travel no longer seems to attract them.
I'd compare this new Ténéré 660 to a good, hardy, sober horse.
For those who know how to tinker a bit, this machine will hardly ever see a dealer, as its maintenance is so minimal.
I didn't think Yamaha would bring this bike up to date for fashion reasons, and yet they did so brilliantly and to my great satisfaction.
I can only recommend it to those who, in these times when travel is a real therapy, want to get away from their daily routine.

French PERSONNE
After having used in my youth (80s) 125 DTMX, then 500 XT (what a machine to slide in the corners) 600 XT just as magnificent.... I got back into motorcycling two years ago and bought a second-hand 660 XT Ténéré. It's harder to get used to than in the past (weight and seat height). After a year's use, it's a good machine. After changing the spark plug (iridium), I've made undeniable gains in fuel consumption (50 km). I've also changed the bulbs for LEDs, and I've gained in power and lighting.
A good machine, but lacking in power. I still miss the 500 and my 600 of youth, so easy to handle and with that incomparable kick-start.

powerful enough even with a loaded duo, all-purpose, highway/road/city/track/off-road, the most fuel-efficient: 4.2L100 with a loaded duo and a 23L tank = at least 500 kms before running out of fuel, simple because it has very few electronics, powerful and reassuring braking, exemplary roadholding, comfortable ... who could do better?

Not disappointed!

This bike is ideal for everyday use, and is happy to take on motorway journeys (130 km/h)

A true trail bike, this medium-displacement model is also ideal for off-road excursions (although don't underestimate its weight). Another asset is the range of accessories available, including Givi (high bubble) and the full Touratech range, to personalize your bike..

sure, for some people it's not as beautiful as a super model like the tiger or something else
but it's a touring beast, with a range of almost 500kms, a smooth ride while still having plenty of pep at low revs, a little pot-smacking noise on acceleration, you can load it up for vacations as if you were going to China for a year, I find it hard to part with! I love it too much!
faults? braking and esthetics
the good points? for a model like this, it's hard to find too many.... thank you yamaha!

I quite like it, and yamaha knows the drill by now. However, traveling to go where;afganistant and kabul, it's over, baghdad too and even algeria it's not sure. The philosophy behind travel bikes isn't the horsepower under the hood you're all asking for (1000cc and why not 1500cc to hit the dunes!!). Nonsense, travelling is all about peace and quiet and poum poum to see the scenery and, above all, in the event of a breakdown, to be able to touch it (electro-injection, lamda sonfes, cata pots and all the tsoin tsoin, do you think that in DELHI, at the bottom of the bouis bouis, they know?
It's funny, as soon as a new bike comes out, they immediately run out of horses: sons of the rich.

i've had a 1994 refurbished for 3 years and I go on vacation to the south of Spain every year with it and in town it's a delight to be able to go everywhere but it's a shame there isn't the same version in 1000... it's not a very beautiful bike but on the road with dunlop d607s, 4L/100 at 110 kms/h, 17 hours of non-stop riding, the bike doesn't care about you... and you're not too tired... A ROYAL motorcycle for cruising and vacations! Rating : 5/5

French Tarmontpel Model 2008
I hesitate between the utilitarian rural trail (this one) and the sumptuous urban trail (the new 700 transalp)
In the first case, if you fall, you'll get 2 scratches on the plastic protectors, which won't affect the look. In the second case, if you wallow when climbing a sidewalk a little too sideways, you'll have to pay 1,000 to 1,500 euros! 2 philosophies depending on use (or non-use)

Superb machine, I had 3 XTZ 660 ( 92 , 94 ,96), very happy that Yamaha insists in the way of the trail, the ballade and the voyage in the long run I adore. I find it very modern and beautiful, and I'm sure I'll be one of those who'll invest in it, hoping the price will be contained. I've been a mono addict for a long time, so I can't resist! French torque Model 2008
I love the look of the bike, it reminds me of the bikes that made me dream when I was younger, the crazy years of the dakar
Yamaha could perhaps have reworked the engine to offer more torque and power to its machine, as 50 hp for 183 kg is a bit tight
I had the opportunity to try out the XTX 660 and already found the engine a bit limited, especially if you want to do a bit of two-up riding. What's more, the XTX is lighter, which is a real shame! If this bike is sold for around 7000 euros, young people will turn to roadsters, which have a more favorable power-to-weight ratio for the same price.

Great!
double discs for good braking, too bad there isn't a 6-speed gearbox. I missed my Dominator and my Tiger was too heavy and too high
And if Triumph came out with a remake of the Thunderbird with a 1050 engine, it would be the ultimate retro bike, a change from mangas!
I hope they put in some horsepower and torque for the sake of mono. It'll bring back memories.

why not? it reminds me of my 1984 400xt, based on the 550, and Yamaha at least has the merit of taking the risk of relaunching this type of machine. bm is also doing it with the x-series, but at far more prohibitive prices. Rating : 5/5
