presentation of the 700 Tracer 2018
The Yamaha 900 Tracer has a little sister. Congratulations! And what a sister. The MT-07 takes the same recipe as the MT-09 and transforms itself into a cross-over that's already shaping up to be a very tempting machine. The new Tracer 700 boasts the "Kando" philosophy, a feeling of deep satisfaction and intense emotion that you get when you experience something exceptional. In terms of mechanical passion, this means creating motorcycles that inspire, exhilarate and put a smile on your face every time you go out. The little Tracer is one of them. At first glance, the 700 Tracer looks like a clone of the 900. Same silhouette, same looks, same poise. But as you get closer, you notice a host of differences. And just as the big Tracer is much more than an MT-09 in SUV clothing, the mid-size model receives a number of modifications that make it a distinctly different machine from the MT-07.
where are the differences, where are the similarities? It's worth taking some time to scan each side of the border. Let's start with the progenitor, one of Yamaha's most successful roadsters. The MT-07 Tracer has gone from being a light, mutinous, fun roadster to being a serious, elegant, rebellious machine. The grafting of an imposing fork head changes its entire physiognomy. And what a success! You can tell that Yam's designers have worked hard on this. Less angular than that of the 900 Tracer, more supple in shape, caressed under the eyes, it achieves the magic of immediately resembling its big brother, while at the same time possessing its own identity. It's a far cry from the GSX-R 600, 750 and 1000 from the turn of the century, all of which were true brothers and sisters. The headlamp replicates that of the 900, with a pencil touch reminiscent of the TDM 900's front end. Connoisseurs will appreciate.
Is it all just this top fairing? No, the manufacturer has applied himself. And has installed a well-designed nest to house the dashboard taken from the roadster. The result is a cosseted impression that naturally leads us to look for little extras. They're not far off: when you think roadster, you think protection, and that's the role of the multi-position adjustable bubble, with a mechanism that seems to be more accessible than on the 900 Tracer. Indispensable these days, 12V sockets can be installed in slots on the sides of the fairing. We won't be getting this type of power supply as standard... At a time when every journey begins by switching on the GPS. Shabby.

The 700 Tracer's identity has been greatly enhanced, and it's not content with an outfitted suit. It thinks far ahead. Witness the new fuel tank, whose capacity rises to 17 liters (+ 3 liters), and the two-tier seat that replaces the sportier double seat of the MT-07. We wonder about the fins in front of the grips. According to the manufacturer, these will improve comfort. Mouais..... These handguards won't be very effective, but they do add style. You can't expect excellence from them, especially since they're half the size of those on the 900 Tracer, which are already moderately convincing. Let's move on quickly to the integrated turn signals, with their more or less hasty incorporation. We'll be happier with the addition of nice (and good) passenger grips, ending with a taillight taken from the MT-09.
and what has the 900 Tracer got back, apart from its playful, invigorating touring philosophy? Well, that's about it. Apart from the rear light and other good ideas, the 700 Tracer didn't steal a single part from the 900. However, there were a couple of things we'd have liked to see again, such as the 1200 Ténéré-style dashboard (which looks really good on this type of crossover machine).s on this type of crossover machine), the suitcase support plates (City or Touring), the center stand or the height-adjustable seat - a tricky point, as the seat height has risen from 805 to 845 mm. Enough to make smaller riders hesitate.
These differences are more or less important. But the 900 Tracer has to justify some of its greediness, in addition to the generosity of its engine.
The engine, precisely. Technically, the 700 Tracer is extremely close to the MT-07. Logical, since it's based on the MT-07. The rider will therefore be able to play with the crossplane-style parallel-twin engine wriggling away underneath. 689 cm3 displacement, 270° timing, 75 horsepower available at 9,000 rpm, a healthy 6.9 mkg of torque at 6,500 rpm... and a playful temperament to delight anyone who rides it. The CP2 block is more than nice. It's brimming with enthusiasm, and in itself justifies the MT-07's success. On the 700 Tracer, it will be a little less fervent, as the bike has become heavier. The fork head, equipment and a few other knick-knacks showed up with a load of 14 kilos. Don't panic; at 196 kilos, this machine is still more than reasonable on the scales. A Versys or a V-Schtroumpf suffers from about twenty extra units.
there's just one annoying detail. Did the radiator need to be so unobtrusive? In contrast, the frame makes a maximum effort to hide itself. With its black-painted junction plates and steel tubes concealed beneath the cladding, the structure aims to fulfil its function without being ostentatious. This is where one of the differences from the MT-07 comes into play: the swingarm has been lengthened to increase the wheelbase by 50 mm, to the benefit of stability. Combined with the increased weight, this new geometry will soften the machine somewhat, which is more in keeping with its more versatile, horizon-spanning vocation.
Similarly, the suspension settings have been revised. We're delighted: Yamaha did the same on the 900 Tracer, which consequently offered more rigorous handling (although there's still room for improvement). The 700 Tracer should prove almost as much fun to ride, with that extra bit of seriousness that many will praise between smiles.
Engine, frame, fork, amorto... and brakes have all been restored to their former glory. It's not the extra weight that's going to do much for the excellent braking provided by 282 mm discs gripped by 4-piston calipers. The rear uses 245 mm single-piston calipers. ABS is fitted as standard.
you'll quickly get the hang of this 700 Tracer. A bit of fun here, a wanderlust there, and the desire will waste no time in manifesting itself between everyday fun and serious mileage on weekends. Yamaha has planned ahead, preparing a list of accessories to turn the little Tracer into a traveler (20-liter soft cases, 39-liter top-case, high bubble...).
Inheriting the qualities of the MT-07 and the crossover concept of the 900 Tracer, the 700 of the same name is priced right between the MT-07 and the big Tracer. That's a hefty price to pay for a direct competitor in the form of the 650 Versys. The Kawa is already on the market and uses very similar assets. A great battle is brewing, where the road will continue to cross paths with effervescent machines.

****Recall campaign*****
On July 31, 2018, Yamaha launched a recall campaign for its MT07 as well as its road-going ' Tracer 700 ' and neo-retro ' XSR700 ' variants.
The screws securing the drive chain housing to the swingarm could loosen and fall out due to vibrations while riding the vehicle. In addition, there was a possibility that once the fixing screws had fallen out, the chain case would break when it hit the drive chain. In extreme cases, the broken part of the chain guard could fall onto the road and hinder traffic. To counter this, Yamaha has launched a recall campaign to replace the chain case spacers and fixing screws.
For the French market, a total of 8,871 machines have been recalled.

The things I didn't like: high price for what it is, unfortunately, original lines that are too bland and faded in traffic, which makes you want to change them. ABS sometimes too intrusive when braking for "sporty" driving. Gearbox rather rough, but that's the Yamaha trademark :) Rating : 5/5 Respond to Levrai
I customized it by adding a center stand, a pannier and 35-liter Givi panniers
It's very easy to ride on a daily basis, and it's great for touring, apart from a right-handle vibration that can get in the way over time
In short, it's a great little bike Rating : 3/5 Respond to Ds45

Starting with an MT07 at 6699â'¬ ABS version, the extra cost should not exceed 1000â'¬, i.e. a selling price of 7700â'¬ approx.
That's the price at which it'll suffer no competition...
At 8000â'¬ and above, it will become a little expensive.
