presentation of the DB7 1098 2008

after a period of marginal sports bikes with a strong identity and measured power (the recentes DB5, DB6 and Tesi 3D are equipped with Ducati's air-cooled 2-valve twin desmo), Bimota returns to the big guns with this new DB7. It's a concentration of Italian know-how, a cocktail of high-pedigree chassis and a severely vitaminized engine.

this 7th Ducati-powered Bimota boasts the formidable 1098 cm3 of Bologna's latest sportbike. A short trip to the Rimini workshops should enable it to spit out a few more horses than the 160 that come with it.

but the most important thing about a Bimota is its chassis, which the small manufacturer strives to design with refinement, innovative technical solutions and haute couture parts. Check out this trellis frame made of chromium-molybdenum steel tubing connected to openwork aluminum plates carved from solid. The swingarm alone is a feast of engineering. The wheel is attached to plates (also cut from aluminum) screwed to a tubular structure. The ExtremeTech shock absorber is anchored to the swingarm reinforcement, not to the frame. What's more, the swingarm axle and footpegs (little aluminum jewels) are attached to the engine housings. The big Marzocchi inverted fork, probably 50 mm in diameter, is equipped, like all modern machines, with an all-radial braking system. Take a look at the superb fork crown and side stand. And what about its beautiful forged aluminum wheels with ultra-thin spokes.
The DB7's other guest of honour is carbon. And it's everywhere: the fairing, mudguard, self-supporting rear shell, clutch housing and gearbox output sprocket cover are all made from this noble material.

claimed to weigh just 170 kg dry, the DB7 is 5 kg lighter than Bimota's previous hyperpsort twin, the SB8K. Designed to go head-to-head with the world's best sportbikes, it's sure to provide plenty of grist for the mill of enthusiasts of fine machines. Its price, as usual, is sure to make your banker break out in a cold sweat.
