Motorcycle specifications BMWK 1200 GT 2005 The missing link

Touring

The early morning chill chills the bones, discourages comforter lovers, tempers the beautiful ardors... and gently makes the K 1200 GT giggle. With its protective fairing, high windscreen, heated seat and grips, the chill will choose a target other than its rider.

The K 1200 GT is in fact a semi-new model. It is based on the RS, which is not widely available. Powerful (130hp full) but too heavy for a sports bike, imposing but not comfortable enough for a GT, its rather ambiguous positioning leaves it little hope for the French market. So BMW pulled out its magic wand. It kept the engine and chassis, improved the fairing, modified the height of the bubble (electric) and handlebars (no longer adjustable), and installed a wider, thicker seat. What's missing to make a good GT? Room for your gear. So soon said, so soon done: a small rack and 2 suitcases with body-colored lids come as standard. The K 1200's sporty look is transformed into an elegant, respectful tourer. We'd compare it to a Falcon in the aviation world.

Even as a tourer, it retains a touch of RennSport. The rider leans forward somewhat. This is slightly tiring in town. You'll be surprised by the handling of this big bike, which never forgets that it weighs almost 300 kg.

As you set off on beautiful (and long) trails, the picture becomes almost idyllic. Your buttocks are pampered by the seat, and you're in a cocoon, undisturbed by the moods of the air. Supple, available, wise at low revs and strong beyond, the big 4-cylinder is an iron fist in a velvet glove. It pushes you hard in every situation.

when the road bends, this stout BM needs to be driven from the handlebars, and its weight-related inertia requires a little more than improvisation. It handles well, very well for a machine of this size, but don't forget it's not a CBR you're holding in your hands. And unlike a CBR, bumpy roads don't destroy comfort or throw the K 1200 off course. If you come across a deer, don't panic. Braking power is superb; just think of the way the BM system works. It's not the pressure exerted but the stroke of the lever that controls the intensity of the action.

it may seem like it, but the K 1200 GT is no competitor to the R 1150 RT. It completes the Bavarian manufacturer's road range. The RT handles better and protects even better. The K is more respectable. A worthy competitor for the FJR 1300, which could also tickle the 1300 Pan-European. Definitely a new queen of the road.

French Model 2005
i bought this bike in 2005 following my redundancy. I'd just got off a Thunderace, which I thought was fantastic. Once I'd tried this 1200 gt, I waited until it was delivered before getting back on a bike. What comfort, what perfect ergonomics. You really get the impression that it's made to measure. The only drawback is maneuvering at a standstill - the GT weighs a lot - and the width with the suitcases (wider than a Pan). Otherwise, road manners are a delight once you've exceeded 30 mph. I've been riding it for 17 years now, and even though I've been invited to test other models from other brands (Kawa, Honda, Yamaha), I've always come back to my GT. I've never bought another bike, and if I had to do so again, I'd do it without any hesitation. It's taken us to Germany, Luxembourg, Scotland and France, without tiring. And when you've got a highly professional dealer, the joy of riding a K1200Gt without boredom is immeasurably greater. My next bike? a BMW of course, but I'll never sell my GT. It gives me unique and incomparable pleasure. Rating : 5/5

I had a cbr 1000f dual and a fazer..the yamaha was nervous but since I no longer have a car and ride motorcycles all year round I decided to sell my yam and bought this 2004 k1200gt with 80,000km and I don't regret it at all... With all the options this bike is a delight to ride. I do a lot of highway driving and the protection this bike offers in winter is just fantastic. You can ride it for miles on end, no matter what the weather, rain, wind, cold, etc. don't get to me. Torquey engine in 6th gear on the freeway, no need to downshift to overtake, unlike my Fazer where I had to use the gearbox a lot. The tempomat for me was more of a gadget for show before, but now that I have it on the bm I can't do without it on the highway. What can I say except that if I had known how good this bike was, I would have bought a bmw long before. I've seen some K1200GTs with 160,000 km on them, and they're still going strong. The only thing you can fault it for is its fuel consumption, but after all, it's a 1200 cm3, and you need all the power you can get to move this big German machine. With a full tank of gas, I don't exceed 300km, or even 250 if I'm pushing it a bit hard, whereas with the Fazer, I could easily do 400 km. In short, I really recommend this bike for those looking for a versatile motorcycle with an engine that can do it all. Unparalleled comfort and a design that doesn't get old and doesn't have to compete with newer bikes... It's fully equipped abs brake coupler heated handle heated seat tempomat electric bubble etc etc there's even a 12 volt socket under the seat on the left side for accessories... Frankly, I'm going to keep this bike until it gives up the ghost! Rating : 4/5
French Mac Clure Model 2003
I've had this machine for 2 months. It's not a common machine, but it's great! It's got everything you'd expect from a modern machine, minus the IT. Power (import model in full 130hp), comfort, equipment, luggage, protection, Tgv-like roadholding, reliability, outstanding braking, everything is great! The drawbacks, as already underlined, are the weight! You don't have twenty years to handle this anvil! No doubt also due to the wide rear tire - phew, it's physical! "Another drawback is the vibration that rises up in the handlebars at cruising speeds. As for maintenance, I do it all myself (former mechanic) and I can tell you it's no piece of cake, especially the purging of the Abs power plant, which takes two hours and goes fast! Not to mention all the fittings that have to be dismantled before you can hope to "get your hands on them"! Another example is the fuel filter...a heresy! in the tank...also two hours! In short, I think the cartridges on Bmw invoices are linked to the on-board technology. Coming from a Pan, which isn't particularly simple technically, maintenance aside, it's club Med!
When it comes to cars, only on a Toyata Supra have I found such a level of complexity. Highly sophisticated, complex and therefore expensive to maintain. In short, the price of excellence.

She looks after herself well. In 2003 she had l\'abs so in 2016 she'll have the power legally. The Michelin P4 GTs are fine. In short, the basics are there for 2.
Points for improvement: gps support, deflector at the top of the bubble, original lighting a little weak (consider high-power LEDs or the new Montpellier system that lights up bends automatically)
The weight is still a little too high, so perhaps a lithium battery will help reduce it a little. 13 years later, it hasn't been left behind by the new models.

i've had this machine for a few years now, and I can tell you that it's given me a lot more pleasure than any bike I've had in the past
I went to the Côte d'Azur this year, in 2014, and there I was able to see how it behaved in terms of top speed, fuel consumption, recovery and comfort
It gave me great satisfaction, and I'd never want to part with it
Just one negative point, the weight at standstill, i.e. it's heavy to handle
If you're looking for a machine to please yourself, this BMW K 1200 GT will give you great pleasure

I bought this second-hand bike at 66,000 kms, and 4 years later it's nearing 100,000 kms. 49 years old, I went from a 125 YBR Yam to a 1200, but I fell for the beautiful oriental blue! Note: I'm 1.65m tall and weigh 70kgs, and if at speeds over 5km/h it's a bike, when you're stationary it's a real anvil! BM comfort, perfect roadholding (Michelin Pilot Road 2: duration, approx. 20,000kms in all weathers except snow and ice), supple (picks it up in 6th gear from 60km/h to 140 with no problem at all, very practical for overtaking without knitting the gearbox, 5.5l/100, but it's a Behemoth and the prices look dangerously like a rip-off!!! Quality comes at a (very) high price... but after 400 kms, you look at the faces of the gussies getting off a sports bike and you laugh!!!!
2 complaints about this bike, which I love: it's too sanitized (electric bubble, heated grips and seat, speed limiter, abs), with the radio and air-conditioning, it's a bit like a car!
What's more, if you want sound, you have to put on an 800â'¬ Akrapovic! In addition to the options already mentioned, it's a real racket practiced by a brand that shows off as well as its users, who are often rich old executives! In short, if this bike verges on perfection (apart from its elephantine weight), my next one will be a Guzzi with the charm of the Italian twin-cylinder like my Breva (2nd bike), less showy and above all less expensive to maintain, mama mia!!!!

French RIDER 08 Model 2002
I was blown away by this bike, which is both a long-haul vessel and a "choupette" on small roads. Admittedly, its weight doesn't make it suitable for crossing Paris at the fateful hour of traffic jams. Even in duet mode, the engine's torque allows you to take off again at 50 km/h in 6th gear, without having to use the gearbox. With over 100,000 kms on the clock, this beauty still breathes just as well, and after opening up its innards, the internal parts are as good as new. Even second-hand, this machine is worth its weight in gold, and the number of kilometers on the odometer doesn't detract from its quality.
So the K 1200 GT is not a "coup de coeur" purchase, but one whose longevity will make many pale in comparison....

Nice bike, great handling, I sometimes ride over 2000 km on weekends, in torrential rain it rides like an albatross, under sunny skies it unfolds like an eagle. At first, I had problems with maneuvers, especially the tiring leaning position. So I didn't hesitate to raise the handlebars. I fitted a "Vario Ergo" product for the K1200GT from wonderlich Germany, which specializes in BMW improvements and ergonomics
This idea came to me from BMWists in the USA, who are also talking about this problem. In addition, there's nothing to complain about when it comes to touring. Best regards

BMW = big rip-off: A persistent bowl noise with less than 500 km on the odometer. BMW SAYS IT'S NORMAL, BUT THEY'VE ALREADY CHANGED ONE FOR ME THAT HAD 30KM AND THE SAME NOISE

Apparently it's a standard problem. The idle was set at 2200 rpm, the bike (new with 470km) smokes blue for 10 minutes and consumes fuel as if there was a hole in the tank

I filled the tank 3 times to cover the 470 km

Weak points: turning, range and a certain width that's a bit of a disadvantage between lanes of traffic (but still easier than the RT with its mirrors in the fairing)

But there are plenty of advantages that more than make up for the two points above
- A smooth engine that picks up at very low revs, avoiding the need to shift gears too frequently (very welcome in town),
- braking: not only very powerful, but above all a bike that doesn't dive (BMW system) and stays upright
- comfort: plush seat, heated grips (although the bubble lacks height to prevent turbulence in the helmet)
- handling: it requires a certain amount of effort to ride, but once you've got it on the rails, it doesn't deviate

I had hesitated with the RT 850 (better suited to city riding than the 1150), but I didn't like the gearbox. On the other hand, the boxer is easier to handle (a real bike), but the mirrors in the fairing are annoying for city use (Paris)

In short, I'm delighted with the K1200 GT (my wallet a little less so) and I highly recommend it (for experienced bikers)
