The BMW R27 represents the culmination of a line of single-cylinder machines from the Bavarian manufacturer. The successor to the R26, it features many of the same technical solutions, including the Earles fork, which was very much in vogue at the time.

Unlike the R26, where the engine is rigidly mounted in the frame, here the block is anchored via silentblocs. The 247 cm3 undergoes significant modifications, giving it 18 horsepower.
Renowned for its quality and reliability, the R27 saw new challengers enter the market. These included Honda, with a 22 hp CB 250, and compatriot Yamaha, with a 24 hp YDS-2.

At the time of its launch, the R27 cost 2,430 Deutschemarks. BMW produced 15,364 units between 1960 and 1966. After that, it was not until many years later, with the introduction of the Rotax-powered F series of trailers, that a single-cylinder engine reappeared on the German market.
