presentation of the 1800 R 18 Dragster 2020
BMW has made no secret of the fact that its new R18 lends itself well to customization, and its arrival in the world began with show-bikes and exhibitions long before it went on sale. Roland Sands is keen to create a dragster version of the big Bavarian custom.
Sketches, sketches, creation... and three and a half months later, a neuro-charged muscle-bike presents itself with a CV to burn rubber and lumbar vertebrae. Any relation to the V-Rod Destroyer? Not really, no.
Visually , the engine stands out even more in the R18 Dragster. 1803 cm3 shared between two cylinders, whose role is no longer to distribute cruising power but violence. Roland's team struggled a little with the engine electronics, having to cope with the addition of a nitrous oxide system, a totally different intake andlargely free exhaust. The stainless-steel megaphone mufflers are hand-built by RSD.
Design and chassis have become much more radical. To beef up the front end, an R Nine-T fork has been fitted, complemented by brake calipers from the hypersport S 1000 RR. However, the brake and clutch master cylinders are by Roland Sands.
At the rear, everything has been simplified. The whole suspension has been removed, and a rigid frame adopted, as befits this kind of adrenalin-pumping machine.
The saddle has also been replaced, with an imposing backrest to support the pelvis under acceleration - a Saddlement creation. The mudguards had to be adapted and the color carefully applied. Chris Wood applied a two-tone metallic blue with white stripes.
