presentation of the Cromwell 1200 X 2024
It takes a lot of nerve to challenge Triumph on the Bonneville's home turf. But that's exactly what Brixton has done with its 1200 Cromwell. A bike with more or less the same attitude, a similar responsive powertrain and a little more technology, but a (slightly) lower level of quality. Now, the Sino-Austrian manufacturer is taking its neo-retro to the next level with a scrambler.
The result is the Cromwell 1200 X. The famous cross symbol illustrates a more off-road spirit. But it's more of a plumage than a major evolution. A handsome exterior, a few accessories and a fair amount of poise make the machine a joy to ride. That's enough to get it out of the asphalt and into the dust. But not too far and not too rough.
After all, the X's ground clearance is the same as that of the standard Cromwell 1200. So, we'll be avoiding big rocks and rivers, but with its Pirelli Scorpion STR Rally mixed tires, the bike can venture onto playful terrain. To prevent mishaps, it's protected by an engine block and a pair of crashbars. The headlight has not been forgotten, with the addition of a grille and mini windscreen.
The rider's riding position is a little more commanding, with redesigned handlebars 40 mm higher and 60 mm wider. It offers a slightly greater lever arm, as well as gum protection with its foam tube skewered into the transverse reinforcement bar.
Cosmetics are where the Cromwell X really stands out. What a contrast! The fuel tank takes on an elegant sandy tone, topped by a new badge. The colors express themselves with a modified brown saddle design, a gold finish for the spoked rims and a whole series of black-painted components (shock absorbers, fork tubes, headlight mounts, airbox covers, mudguards, headlight casing). The overall effect is chic without being too shocking. Perforated plates cover the injection system.

Underneath its "old-school motorcycle" look, the big Cromwell doesn't forget the tech, with two riding modes (Eco or Sport), ABS, a color TFT screen, an anti-dribble clutch, a USB socket and disconnectable traction control
If you're tempted by the excursions, don't be too optimistic. The machine weighs in at 235 kilos.
Like all new models produced in China, the Cromwell 1200 X will have to get past the judgments and hesitations. The standard model has already made a good impression; the X can benefit from this. Let's hope that the troubles at parent company KSR don't cloud the horizon.
