presentation of the Pendine Sand Racer 2018

The renaissance of Brough Superior has been on a par with the excellence of yesteryear. With its aura of prestige, the English brand was one of the most renowned, if not the most illustrious, of its time. For its comeback, a model of high pedigree was born, also bearing a famous name: the SS 100. But one model is not enough to ensure longevity. So Brough began to build up a range with a somewhat scrambler-like derivative, the sumptuous Pendine Sand Racer. A little more affordable, the bike is just as refined and exciting to discover.

Captivating. That's perhaps the best word to describe the first glimpse of the Pendin. A little deeper but by no means dull, expressive and seductive, it is approached with an irresistible sense of awe. The belle would be at home in the lobby of a château, while the SS 100 would be more at home in an aviation congress or in the mechanical section of the Louvre. A beautiful object, but one that the now Franco-Brittanic brand intends for more rural use.
In a manner of speaking, because who would risk flanking this kind of jewel by the ground and the road? To justify its name, the bike raises its exhausts. And what exhausts they are! From hunting horns to flute-like strains, concluded with threatening bevels of belching.
To violate the sound waves of a corner of memory? Or to savagely express the name that sticks to its fairing? Does this bike pay homage to an unknown Lord Sand Pendine? Not at all. Pendine is a small seaside village in Wales, with as many inhabitants as a TGV train. In the early 20th century, its popularity stemmed from its 11 km long beach - Pendine Sands - where races and speed records were held. More recently, Guy Martin clocked a top speed of 181.7 km/h on his bike.
The brand's founder, Georges Brough, loved the area so much that he named his racing bikes and even his shack after it.

So, is not the story of a rider who sweats out this Brough Superior, but of a land of performance. The engine will have to prove itself worthy, and we can have every confidence in its 997 cm3 twin. Very visual, very French too, the block designed in collaboration with Akira develops 100 hp and 9.1 mkg. Like the SS100, it can be boosted to 130 hp and a hefty 12.2 mkg for track use only.
The engine and much of the chassis are identical. The front axle is one of the most striking in current production. This Fior-type aluminum double wishbone not only provides more precise steering and damping, but is also crafted like a piece of goldsmith's art, enhancing the Brough's bow. The only difference with the roadster is the braking system. The 4D system, comprising two double-discs, has been replaced by a more conventional 320 mm twin-wheels with 4-piston radial calipers. But still from Beringer, to underline French excellence.
Let's continue in the area of differences with the swingarm. A magnificent piece of all-aluminium machined from solid. The suspension layout is simplified, with the monoshock positioned laterally directly from the arm to a plate attached to the frame. The rider's torso is raised with the handlebars upright. The 18" rims have been replaced by a 19" front wheel and a 17" rear wheel. In the same area, the transfer of the road fittings has purified the hull into an irresistible wasp's abdomen. The headlight has also been reduced in size, while a small smoked windscreen has been added. Perhaps the only questionable element of this bike.

This Brough Superior Pendine Sand racer will be available in two trim levels, S for Sport and D for Desert, for autumn 2018. At just under 60,000 euros, this is the entry-level model in the range. Quite an entry-level model for a seaside parade bike.
