presentation of the XB-9S LIGHTNING 2004
after giving birth to the incredible XB-9R and its equally surprising châssis (gasoline-containing frame, oil in the swingarm, 92 hp Harley engine, minimalist wheelbase, very sensitive suspension), we thought of giving it a little sister for street brawling. We got out the screwdrivers, replaced the fork head with 2 small headlights and a piece of windscreen, swapped the handlebars for a handlebar (with footrests and a lower seat, which allows you to change the riding position), did a little tinkering and here's the XB-9S. It looks like a roadster that wants to kick some ass. Like the XB-9R, the Lightning takes time to get used to, but has a different set of operating instructions: while its sibling is more like a racing bike that you have to ride almost like a 125, the S requires a wind-up riding style, which translates into bluffing efficiency.
the technical solutions used are the same as for the XB-9R, and this Buell remains an atypical machine. The bike is ultra-compact, super-agile and, even if its performance isn't extraordinary in absolute terms, the available power can be used to the full on the road. The gearbox is slow and lacks precision, and the engine doesn't like to go to the top of the rev counter. But that's not where the Buell's philosophy lies: there's no need to rush it! When winding up, the efficiency is striking and the cornering speeds mind-boggling. A real toy. It's not without its faults: the rear brake forgot to be effective, the turning radius is abominable, the duo is synonymous with torture; as for protection and autonomy, they're simply not in the specification. But the XB9S is a roadster with a strong character, uncompromising and full of thrills.
