The Pulse roadster, which, along with the Origin trail bike, marks Can-Am's return to the motorcycle sector. After a short but notable presence in the 70s, the Canadian brand has decided to return to the motorcycle sector. And it's doing so by embracing the current alternative trend: electric power.

This type of energy blends perfectly with urban developments. And just as well, since this is the sector and the public targeted by pulse. Can-Am called on its cousin company Rotax to design a suitable powertrain. Rotax has developed the E-Power system. An all-in-one solution comprising motor, battery, inverter and charger, all liquid-cooled.

At its maximum, the Pulse can offer the power of a 500, with 47 horsepower under its belt. Right up to the A2 limit. Continuous power is more modest, reaching 20 kW / 27 hp. Can-Am has also thought about A1 license holders, with a 125-equivalent 11 kW version.
But where the electric motor comes into its own is in the torque department. Instantly, the rider has 7.4 mkg at his disposal, the muscle of a mid-size roadster. And this value is available at all times, up to 4,600 rpm.

Driving is designed to be as simple as possible. No gearbox, no clutch, just a throttle and 4 driving modes. The "characters" Sport +, Normal, Eco and Rain regulate traction control and throttle response. Energy is then transmitted to the rear wheel via a chain protected in a swingarm. The result is not only pleasing and technical to look at, but a triple bonus: no mess, no maintenance, and a long service life.

The Can-Am Pulse offers a good deal of technology under its serious yet motley exterior. These include the driving aids mentioned above, as well as a gigantic 10.25-inch color TFT screen (with Apple CarPlay and BRP Connect), an energy regeneration system on deceleration, a recharging process that takes just 50 minutes to go from 20% to 80% on a Mode 3 socket (it takes MUCH longer for a full charge on a standard Mode 2 socket), backlit controls, Bluetooth connectivity and reverse gear.

for its chassis, the Pulse uses Kayaba suspensions anchored to an almost non-existent frame (the battery serves as the supporting structure). The 41mm inverted fork and monoshock provide 140mm of travel and very little adjustment - only preload at the rear. The Origin brother is much better off in this respect. Braking is via a single disc per wheel, 320 mm at the front and 240 mm at the rear.

Autonomy is always a tricky point to tackle. Can-Am optimistically claims 160 km in town. Achievable with a cool ride; but have fun checking out its 0 to 100 km/h time of 3.8 seconds, and you'll see how quickly the 8.9 kWh battery pack calms the mileage horizon.

As a global specialist in recreational activities, the Bombardier Group and its subsidiary Can-Am are reviving the joviality and practical instinct of the motorcycle, almost 50 years after its first forays. The Pulse roadster's design is not insignificant, and its technical solutions will arouse interest. But the price isn't exactly democratic.... Like all electric machines.
