presentation of the Indiana 650 1985
The engine is the well-known and much-used Pantah in its 350cc, 650cc and 750cc versions. The 650 version comes in a sober, glossy black paintwork. While this displacement is less elegant than its 350cc (developed mainly for the Italian market) and 750cc siblings, it gives it a "Bad Boy" air that sets it apart from the rest of the production.
And this style suits it perfectly. While the Indiana's custom styling is very classic for its time (oversized forks, small tank and double-decker seat), the engine has nothing to do with its sporty origins.

Admittedly, it has been dressed up for the occasion in chrome crankcases (see photo opposite of 350cc engine) which suit it perfectly, but the character is still there. This engine is much more turbulent than a Guzzi 650 Florida or a Yamaha XV500 Virago. In terms of dynamics, it's more akin to a Honda VF500C Magna-style mini-custom-dragster, with Ducat' character added: less torque but more gruffness; a sort of "Sport-cruiser".
On the road, the indiana puts on a show at every traffic light; a big bad look, a hell of a noise and acceleration to match. However, the chassis remains a custom bike. The long fork isn't a model of rigidity, the 260 mm front disc isn't the most efficient, and the steering is a little too sharp.
This custom bike with a strong character was not without interest. However, the styling was too far removed from Ducati's image to be a hit. The commercial career was not the most brilliant. But, as is often the case in Italy, this custom was saved by its police version, which found favour with the authorities.
