Motorcycle specifications Honda125 VARADERO XLV 2005 TDR in the firing line

On-Off Road

It's not all about big cubes. Honda now offers a 125 version of its Varadero trail bike. The aesthetics are largely inspired by the big 1000 trail bike, and like it, the XLV 125 is equipped with a twin, in this case that of the Shadow. An excellent engine, one of the best 4-stroke 125s, powering the only twin-cylinder trail bike on the market.

Although it is sober and takes the Varadero along at a good pace, it struggles to pick up speed, as the bike is not a model of lightness. It has to be said that its size is imposing and particularly attractive. Added to this is the substantial, high-quality equipment, not to mention life on board. If the 1000 is a quality tourer, the smaller model also does well: range is impressive, protection is convincing (even excellent with the high-bubble option), and comfort is top-notch. The seat and suspension are friendly companions on the road.

A good braking machine, provided you apply firm pressure, the Varadero is also at ease in town. Its dimensions don't prevent the rider from putting his or her feet on the ground, as the seat is at the right height. With its good roadholding, it has only the TDR to contend with, whose 2-stroke engine is far more peppy (especially in the unbridled version).

VARADERO 2006 GOLD Color. 12130 kms. 3.13l/100 mainly small roads and some city driving. No freeway, too dangerous. Very comfortable. I've had it since 2019. Maintenance done regularly. Back to the doctor in 10 days. Tires changed in 2022 by Pirelli road, without studs (I do not do off-road). Minor worries: the blinker switch takes a long time to go off, the side stand is scary from time to time, the neutral position is hard to find when stationary. Rating : 5/5

Hi, it's very easy to dismantle the commodo, and you have to remove all the accumulated dirty grease and grease it lightly when reassembling. In fact, as soon as it gets cold, the grease tends to solidify and form a protective and...insulating layer, resulting in a false contact in the control unit. Rating : 5/5

What a great bike for back-road riding! It immediately gets up to 90. You can also optimize it a little to gain in riding comfort (a little more torque). What's more, it's sober. Rating : 5/5

Hello,
I own this Model since April 2010
It currently has 26900 km
I have mostly done 1 major overhaul at 12000 km
Otherwise, routine maintenance
Neutral and side stand not very stable, no fuel gauge?
Otherwise, it's reliable
I also have a Top-Case, appreciated by my passengers (S.D.S.)

My VARADERO is from 2005 and I'm the third owner. I've had it for a short time, but enough to say that it's a good bike that holds the road well and is very comfortable (especially as my back is very sore following an accident). I pushed it up to 120 (I think it still wanted more...and without being in the red). I think it's a beautiful bike that doesn't consume a lot of fuel - just great! Rating : 5/5

otherwise mechanically nothing to say it's becane the top of the top. unfortunately I am forced to sell it with regret but these 5586km I did with will remain much more pleasant than my yamaha tw I had before

Hi there,
I'm 52 years old, and I've had the new 2002 version of the vara. I can assure you that to find a fault with it, apart from the fuel gauge and the lack of the original center stand, you have to get up early
I kept it for 5 years, and with regular maintenance at my local dealer, I only changed one chain kit and one set of tires, because there were 2 pegs in each (I USED IT EVERY DAY)
And no, a 2-stroke and a 4-stroke are not the same thing, you can't compare them. I weigh nearly 118 kg, and with my wife behind me who does 65, I've never had any trouble overtaking trucks. All I have to do is drop down a gear, pick it up again, and it's a breeze
Unfortunately, a serious illness has prevented me from continuing on two wheels, which is a great pity, as I often made the round trip from Paris to Providence in the same day, without having a bad day
I've done the same thing 2 times with a KIMCO ZING, and believe me, we often stopped because of the discomfort, and now, okay for overtaking, you can hang on, 105 max for the two of us on it

Bravo honda for its VARA

Hello, I'm the proud owner of a 2005 varadero limited edition, which I use exclusively for weekend duo rides, and I'm delighted with its fuel consumption of 3.15/100kms (last trip). The only downside is the lack of a fuel gauge. Rating : 5/5

hello everyone! i bought a varadero in june 2006 limited series i changed the saddle for a personalised one what more comfort! i also put a high bubble there too it's great no more wind! i have now 5000 kms and all is going for the best it's true that a little more power would be welcome especially to overtake the heavies it's the only reproach otherwise what a line! i'm 60 years old and before i had a 125 yamaha so the big change for the better of course... I just sold my ybr 125 for a brand new varadero
brand new. We've just done a little mountain biking with my wife and I can tell you that it was a blast, and what's more, I'm just breaking it in; it's a great bike, although I'm very happy with my ybr, with which I've still covered 13,000km, but it's still less comfortable than the vara. it's great!!!!

I own a brand-new, grey and blue Vara from September 2004, with 8,000 kms on the clock (I'm going to leave it at the dealership for servicing), I only use it at weekends, as I'm very busy during the week. I'm 60 years old (I rode motocross when I was a student on the Mongueux track near Troyes, at the time I had a Lambretta 125)
The longest distance I ever covered in one day on my Varadero was 660 kms, with a 2-hour stopover in Nancy. I didn't have any back pain, as the riding position on this bike is excellent.
I can only say good things about this Vara
I haven't made any modifications, but I'm thinking of buying an engine block.

I've had the Varadero 125 for a little over two months now, and I have nothing to say about it except that a fuel gauge would be welcome!
There's a great choice of colors and what a size!
The weight is noticeable for the first few kms, but you soon get used to it!
Fuel consumption: 15 euros and 400 km of pleasure guaranteed!
V-Twin shadow engine for guaranteed reliability and robustness
In short, a bike to recommend!
If you have any questions, come and have a look here: http://varadero125.forumactif.com/index.forum

FYI: the Yamaha 2-stroke is more "nervous" than the Honda 4-stroke ... it's up to you to decide whether you want to play the rossi with a trail bike or if you're aiming for cruising and comfort!
Personally, I love this crutch!
A+

Great bike...for a beginner. Comfort, safety and ease are top-notch, but the TDR is much better (I ride both, so I know what I'm talking about). People are going to tell me: you can't compare a 2T and a 4T: ah well, why not? They're 2 125s, aren't they?
Having said that, I love a quiet ride on my son's Vara, and it's also very economical in terms of fuel consumption, but when I want to have fun, I take the TDR!
The Vara's biggest selling point, in my opinion, is its size, which is very flattering for its owner: there's a reason why a lot of B license holders ride it; it's a motorcycle for the 2-wheeler-hungry, with a well-stocked wallet for those who buy it new!

Hello everyone,

i've had a vara for 3 weeks now and I can tell you that this bike is great. Extremely easy to handle, excellent manoeuvrability, but as for the lack of power, I can't say I'm still breaking it in
The Vara is a great choice for a first motorcycle experience; the only downside is that it makes you want to get a license to ride a bigger bike lol

On that note, I'm off for a ride!

I've had a Vara for a year and a half now, and the troubles are starting... First of all, I lost the selector in a small virolo, so there's nothing to panic about, but it was a 1/2-hour job, because the kit was missing the famous key for removing the cover on the selecto nut!
The 8000 km oil change and the 125 is no longer the same. I mentioned it to the dealer, who kept it for an afternoon, but nothing he said
It even lacked peach afterwards..
It didn't take long ... rear cylinder tightening with wheel lock and a 10-meter slide with passenger... phew, all safe and sound, but scary. My bike is under warranty for a week. But why repair 1 cylinder and not the second by prevention..
Thanks for your comms

Well, I'm thinking of buying it after 4 years of driving
I've heard of problems in winter: it would stall if you ran on SP95, but with SP98 it wouldn't happen again!
Have you had this problem?
What's more, no gauge? How do you see the fuel level? A blade of grass in the tank? LOL
Apart from that, I'm really into the look! It's a bit expensive, but hey, it's Honda, so it's a guarantee of quality, especially with the shadow's tried-and-tested twin-cylinder!
A+ et bon vent !

Comfort support, lacks a bit of peach, but it's only a 125, top speed 120km h, look nothing to complain about, with the optional sabot and top kas, for future motorists with an A licence Rating : 5/5
Slt!! I'm 17 years old, I've got my 125 licence in my pocket, I bought a super second hand bike and here I am with a varad (which will go to my father once I've moved up a category). The bike's got a great face, excellent comfort, and it's easy to swallow up the kms (even with two people) given the range of around 400 norns! Melodious noise, good braking if you push hard enough. Very torquey but lacks a bit of peach, well, you can't have everything. Watch out for sporty driving, though, as the footbraces tend to play with the tarmac! Rating : 5/5

This is a top-of-the-range 125, in terms of comfort, roadholding (even if the standard tires are wooden), and the varadero is great as a duo, taking me everywhere. It lacks a bit of pep and a 6th gear, but what a look!

I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one who worships the Varadero, which, like the Clio, has all the makings of a great bike: good size for a 125 (it doesn't say that on it, and many people fall for it), comfort (both for the passenger and the rider), diesel consumption and insurance (even for those who only have a car license). The superlatives could still be numerous, it's so easy to drive. The only complaints have already been mentioned: it lacks a bit of peachiness (due to the weight) and you have to hit 6,000 rpm to get it to move a bit. The fairing's gaping mouth also offers a good wind grip that the Varadero can't compete with. Despite the rather high price tag, I think it's an excellent, versatile bike that makes you want to take your driving test without hesitation. Rating : 5/5

I picked up a Vara after being lost for 1 year on a Yam TW, cute but with poor performance. The Varadero is a good marketing response to guys like me, approaching forty, who want to have fun on a bike that doesn't look like a moped, without getting a license. From that point of view, it's bingo. You'll have noticed that the "125" logo cleverly does not appear on the machine. In short, you'd think you were riding a 500. That's only because, after the first few laps, during which the difference with the TW is striking, you get down to the nitty-gritty. I was looking for duo skills, and I found them. 120 odometers for 2 people isn't too bad, especially as the comfort level is very high. As a result, I'm getting pins and needles in the handles to get past the big cube. So I tried out (on the track) displacements ranging from 650 to 1400 cc. Well, I can tell you that I wouldn't know what to buy! Because the Varadero's size, too, sets the bar very high. If you're going to change bike, you might as well do it for the comfort and size. From this point of view, a 650 BMW is ... less comfortable, and smaller. Ditto for Kawa's 500 KLE. So, hats off to the Varadero for its marketing niche, it was finely played. I'm going to take my driving test, but I'm sure I'll keep the Varadero for a while yet, because it's an excellent machine, especially for touring, and it saves me money: 135 euros insurance, 3.6 l/100 fuel consumption. Nice, isn't it? Rating : 5/5

I've owned a Vara (my first machine) for almost a year now, and it's been a good machine overall (NO worries), fun to ride (including on the main roads) and above all rewarding. Mr Honda, for the next version, please include a fuel gauge. In any case, the Vara has enabled me to join the two-wheeled clan, and confirms my first desire: TO GET A LICENCE. Rating : 5/5
