presentation of the FTR 1200 Sport 2024
Indians, like Harleys, convey an image of custom and pachydermic tourers, full of charisma and hypnotic melody with their huge, slow engines. But that's changing. One has a trail bike, while the Sioux have opted for a powerful roadster.
The FTR 1200 is not a streetfighter; rather, it claims to be part of the flat-track, street-road movement. The S version arrived at the same time as the standard model, in 2019, and has now been replaced by the Sport.
In the purest American spirit, the mutation of one motorcycle to another translates into... a few cosmetic effects. This isn't a Japanese or a European, eager to bring performance with chassis and engine modifications. No, the FTR 1200 is upgraded from S to Sport with the following features:
- the fork cowling is replaced by a windscreen
- Addition of a seat backrest and engine cowling
- Restyled radiator scoops
- Redesigned fuel tank
- Five kilos heavier
Other elements have evolved as in the entire FTR range. Most have adopted a new color TFT display. Slightly smaller (101 mm) and circular in shape, it still features the RideCommand infotainment system; coupled with the phone, it provides GPS mapping, among other functions. The FTRs feature a new clutch, readjusted braking for firmer response and a higher position for the speedometer. Last but not least, a new sport exhaust system replaces the Akrapovic of the old S
between the 17-inch wheels and the tubular steel trellis frame, everything has been retained. The twin sends over 120 hp and 12.2 mkg through the gears. It's all under control, with a good spread of electronics, including angle-sensitive ABS and traction control, three riding modes (Sport - Standard - Rain), cruise control, stability control, an inertial unit and anti-wheeling. There's also a USB port for those nomadic devices you take everywhere with you
We can't say that the FTR 1200 S has been replaced by the Sport; it would be more accurate to say that the S has changed its name. Its presence is undeniably a little more fun, without the rider feeling lost. Performance and handling are identical.
