presentation of the Z 650 S 2026
The Z 650 is ready for some sportiness. It has thus evolved into the Z 650 S—a slightly edgier version that breathes new life into this flagship model. It features a fresh take on ergonomics, with repositioned footrests, a new wide “fat bar” handlebar setup, and improvements to both the rider’s and passenger’s seats.
The new, more forward-leaning riding position is complemented by a redesigned front seat that is more comfortable and approximately 20 mm higher than that of the previous Z650. The overall seating area is wider, while the passenger seat is 20 mm wider and features 10 mm of additional padding. A Style seat and an ERGO-Fit seat lowered by 20 mm are part of the wide range of available accessories.
Z 900 Spirit
With its Z 900-inspired front end, the Z 650 S exudes a more imposing presence. The new fairings reinforce this sense of robustness, complemented by triple-lens LED headlights. The taillight and turn signals are also LED.
The Z650 S aims to captivate with its meticulous details, such as the elegant aluminum radiator guards that highlight its premium character. At the rear, its compact, raised silhouette with sharp lines features a bold design that reinforces its dynamic and menacing stance. Subtly integrated metallic accents add a high-end finish, underscoring the attention to detail and quality of design.

The Z650 S offers more than just a new riding position and a 30 mm wider handlebar: it also features a new 4.3-inch TFT instrument cluster (also inspired by the Z 900) that displays all essential information while automatically adjusting to ambient light for optimal readability.
The display can be switched between two modes: the first features a bar-graph tachometer, while the second offers a modern hexagonal tachometer design. The background automatically switches from white to black in low-light conditions, or can be adjusted manually according to the rider’s preferences. Additionally, this instrument cluster serves as an interface with the Kawasaki Rideology smartphone app, providing expanded access to a range of connected features.
Despite its “S” designation, the Kawa offers no technical changes to its chassis. On the engine side, the 649cc twin-cylinder has been revised to improve low-end torque. Its power (68 horsepower) and maximum torque (6.5 mkg) remain unchanged. It therefore relies primarily on its style and on-board experience for its added appeal, rather than on performance; although agility should benefit from the new ergonomics. In terms of rider aids, it features traction control, a new ABS system from Continental, and an optional shifter (for upshifts only). The weight has increased by 2 kilograms.

A well-trodden path
The Z 650 regularly evolves in small increments. This S version is no exception to the rule. Visually more dynamic, it can also count on its responsive and versatile engine, though it lacks character—especially when compared to an MT-07—and power when pitted against a 750 Hornet. Many people would love to see a Z 700 with a 270° crankshaft and Kawa DNA running through its veins. What about you?
