presentation of the Z 650 2020

You grope, you wonder, you hesitate, you gauge, and when you've just got your license, you often come back to a final hesitation: Z 650 or MT-07? And not necessarily when you're a new biker. If these two roadsters spend their years in the top 5 sales charts, it's because they manage to appeal to a wide audience.

For 2020, the mid-size Z is getting a few tweaks to try and catch up with the Yamaha in terms of sales. Sometimes, it's all about the engine character or the fun of the chassis; sometimes, all it takes is a little something extra to tip the scales. Well, the Z 650 offers some nice little extras to keep the potential mate.

We're taking it easy on the alterations. They mainly concern the face, still guided by the Sugomi ideology, with the impregnation of the new Kawa roadster identity. A move initiated by the Z 400, giving the 650 a more venomous approach. That's where the seduction comes in, because after that, it's all about the details. Reworked side panels, redesigned radiator scoops, a few black-painted housings and trim parts and a new windscreen subtly characterize the redesigns.

As for the chassis, nothing has changed. The tubular steel frame, suspension, wheels and brakes are all the same, carried over from the previous model. Kawasaki has worked in other areas. Firstly, to improve ground contact by fitting Dunlop Roadsport 2 tires. Secondly, passenger comfort has been improved by giving the seat more consistency. The second-level seat is 5 mm thicker in the center, and 10 mm thicker on the sides.
Thirdly, the engine needs a little overhaul. A few tweaks to the intake and exhaust make for a cleaner, Euro 5-compliant exhaust note, without affecting power and with more mid-range torque. On the other hand, the maximum power output loses a little 0.2 mkg.

where the Z 650 really comes into its own is on the high-tech side. Everybody.... a lot of people are connected now. There's the LCD pad and welcome to 4.3-inch TFT instrumentation. It's the same 10.9 cm color window installed on the Ninja 650. The display is frankly nicer than on the old Z and offers more possibilities. Including Bluetooth connectivity for the Rideology app. With it installed on your smartphone, you can adjust certain instrument settings, get maintenance information, track your itinerary by GPS, be alerted to a call, SMS or e-mail directly on the dashboard, and more... If the black background doesn't suit you, you can reverse it with a more expressive white.

Let's not forget to mention the new LED lighting, before letting everyone get impatient to start their twin. Its 68 horsepower are ideal for mid-range players, while the featherweight 188 kilos will let themselves be exhilarated by the joy of this fun and easy machine. The chassis relies on simple yet homogeneous components, calibrated just for the machine. The tubular steel frame holds a standard 41 mm fork and a preload-adjustable shock absorber. Two 300 mm brake discs and double-piston calipers are used for braking. The face-off with the Yamaha MT-07 promises to be even hotter. In Z's opinion, being an entry-level roadster is nothing like being low-end.

p.S.: For its launch, the Z 650 benefits from an introductory price of 7,099 euros.

euro moto école/ K650
French brosse Model 2025
I am a student of euro moto conduite. I'm getting my a2 license. I'm still on a K 650 z. I don't have much choice, I'm a beginner. Good bike overall. Heavy when you fall off. It's quite complete, if I'm not mistaken. Reactive when cornering, brakes quite lightly, average torque when I'm on the freeway. I'm on the throttle. Weighs its weight, but more reassuring than a bike that's too light, and therefore dangerous for my taste. Indeed, the warmth of the engine returns to my legs.
It's comforting.

I find this bike a pleasure to ride, but the engine isn't very smooth at low revs, even in 4th gear when travelling at low speeds. Kawasaki offers its own 14-litre semi-rigid cases for more or less distant destinations, which is very practical. Rating : 4/5
La chaleur du moteur chauffe les cuisses ?
French Elysa Model 2023
I bought this new kawa Z650 last year to replace my MT07. And yes, being a small man (157 cms), I don't have much choice! It would suit me just fine, if I didn't have the heat of the engine rising up my inner thighs. It's so unpleasant, I feel like I'm burning up! !!!! My husband, who's much taller than me, tried it and didn't feel any discomfort at all. So I think it's because I'm so small (I'm really "in the bike"), my thighs are tight against the fairing, so the heat goes straight to my thighs! Does anyone have the same problem as me? Because of this, I don't think I'll keep it, it's much too uncomfortable, and I'm thinking of going for the Honda Hornet 750 instead. Well, I'd love to know what you think, fellow bikers. Rating : 3/5
French Saucisse Model 2022
Great bike for beginners, but the suspension leaves a lot to be desired. The rear amorto is quickly put under strain (original), and waddles at the slightest bend at sustained speed. The engine is fairly linear and pleasant to ride, but a little sluggish when you're on the attack. Rating : 3/5
French Rdum Model 2022
It's my bike and I really like it. I wouldn't want anything else! Rating : 5/5
Avis
Motorcycle often used in auto schools and for A2 beginners. I'm 1m60 and the seat height is great for my size. I find the bike quite heavy to lift when you're on the ground :') but for a 650, that's to be expected I guess
Good handling
Not very powerful for my taste
The fuel tank is similar in size, to within 1l, to the mt07 of the same year
Rating : 4/5
French Flyingjack Model 2021
an extra 10 or 12 HP would make it even more attractive and would deserve 5 stars from me. Rating : 4/5
