The 850 V7 is one of those motorcycles where the emotion starts long before you press the starter button. Time seems to crash against it like waves against a lighthouse. A little retro, a little neo, a lot Guzzi and fundamentally different. While the Stone leans towards a rebellious attitude, the Special has long defended a timeless class, somewhere between distinguished and classic.

This new iteration is surprising in a number of ways. Modernism has been splashed all over it, in a few details whose importance cannot be overlooked. Oh, of course, it's taken care to retain its old-school roadster look, with its cheeky fuel tank, spoked rims and twin engine of unmistakable age. Only the side panels have been slightly reworked, the rear mudguard shortened and the exhaust reworked, but the differences from one generation to the next are hardly noticeable.

But it's his that will be the source of the ambiguity. The V7 Special abandons its round headlamp in favor of the optic of all V7s, in the middle of which a stylized eagle displays its daytime wings. A change of state, a change of spirit.
The dashboard has been taken on board in the same breath. Gone are the old-school needle meters. This will be the dashboard for the whole family, with a digital display.

Perhaps the Special felt marginalized for wanting to change in this way... In any case, it maintains its distance from the Stone with classier colors, a large passenger grab bar, chrome, the abandonment of fork gussets, a bolstered seat, chrome headlight surrounds and milled engine fins.

After receiving the (deflated) V85 engine in 2021, the V7 was given a new lease of life and a more distant future. The cylinders share 853 cm3 in an iconic design scheme. Guzzi has worked on the airbox, piston cooling and exhaust system, installed a third lambda probe, adopted ride-by-wire control and increased the diameter of the throttle body. As a result, the block passes Euro5+, and gives a bonus. Horsepower climbs from 65 to 67.3 hp at 6,900 rpm, and torque rises from 7.5 to 8.1 mkg, with a fuller, smoother curve.

Moto-Guzi had long thought that traction control had a place on the V7. It's still there, but the arrival of ride-by-wire immediately brings an Influence over it. Two Driving Modes are introduced, 'Stada' and 'Pioggia', affecting the MGCT level and throttle response. Cruise control is also included.

A certain V7 Sport gets a more muscular chassis. The V7 Special prefers to keep its old-fashioned attributes, with a double-cradle steel frame, 40 mm forks, twin rear shock absorbers and one brake disc per wheel. At the front, strength is appreciable with a 4-piston Brembo caliper biting a 320 mm track, but you mustn't abuse it. The ABS is there just in case. The 260 mm rear disc with 2-piston caliper is a welcome reinforcement.

The Moto-Guzzi 850 V7 progresses in every respect, discreetly, quietly, as befits its philosophy. It may have lost a little of its soul, but none of the passion that makes you choose a Guzzi before you choose a motorcycle. onneville.

Esprit, are you there? NO, because not to mention the impoverishment of the colors on offer, the whole point of such a special version is that it should be... and until now, the charm of the V7 special was expressed in its more classic or retro look than the stone... but now it has nothing more or less to offer than the latter, apart from spoked wheels which could just as well be offered as an option on the stone.... And above all, like the triumph speed twin, it has unfortunately lost its beautiful chrome needle-type speedometer, in a major aesthetic error: but ride by wire doesn't excuse everything, and for lovers of classic motorcycles, it seems to me that we should be able to adapt a little electonics in double meters that would remain needle-type, even if digital!
