BMW's Boxer engine , renowned for its reliability and performance, could soon undergo a major evolution. Thanks to a recent patent, the brand's engineers are exploring the integration of an ignition pre-chamber system, already used in diesel engines and Formula 1 vehicles.
Although this technology dates back to the first diesel engines of the early 20th century, it is now being revived in gasoline engines. The principle consists of pre-igniting the fuel in a small chamber before it is completely burnt in the engine's main chamber. This process enables more efficient combustion, reducing vibrations and pollutant emissions, and improving overall energy efficiency.
BMW anticipates a greener future
Although motorcycles are not yet subject to the same stringent environmental regulations as cars (in Europe, new cars with internal combustion engines will be banned from 2035), BMW is already preparing for these future constraints. The ignition pre-chamber not only improves engine performance, but also helps reduce emissions of soot and NOx, harmful pollutants.
