Yamaha and MotoGP have formalized a long-term agreement under which the Japanese manufacturer will become the exclusive motorcycle supplier for the FIM Moto3 World Championship from 2028 to 2033.
Announced at a joint press conference during the Dutch Grand Prix, this initiative marks a major turning point for motorcycle Grand Prix racing. It reflects a shared commitment to strengthening the pathway for young riders to advance to the premier classes.
A New Technical and Sporting Approach
The program is based on four pillars: accessibility, sporting fairness, technical excellence, and a long-term vision. The stated goal is to ensure that individual talent remains the determining factor in riders’ progression, while maintaining a high level of competition.

On the technical front, Yamaha will develop a race prototype based on its CP2 twin-cylinder production platform (the 700cc engine found in the MT-07, Tracer 7, 700 Ténéré, R7, and XSR 700), extensively reworked to meet Grand Prix requirements. Engineers are aiming for a higher power-to-weight ratio than current Moto3 bikes, as well as a larger bike frame, which is considered better suited to the physique and riding style of the new generation.
A Global Ecosystem Starting in 2029
The agreement will extend beyond the World Championship itself. Starting in 2029, the FIM Moto3 Junior World Championship is set to adopt a version with slightly simplified specifications. Discussions are also underway to integrate this technical platform into other regional championships.
The rollout schedule calls for prototype test sessions starting this year, followed by an official unveiling of the machine in 2027, ahead of its official competitive debut scheduled for 2028.
