India is a bustling market, with two-wheelers all over the place (literally and figuratively). A number of local start-ups are venturing into the electric sector to capture a share of the huge potential for development in this gigantic country (1.4 billion inhabitants).
In the suburbs of Bangalore, the small company Orxa Energies has been developing its electric motorcycle solution for several years. The result is the Mantis, a roadster with a taut design, a violent face and a belly full of electrons.
The Mantis looks like a streetfighter, with a motor packed with watts. And yet, its powertrain boasts just 27.5 hp. Torque is more flattering, at 9.5 mkg, the equivalent of a 900 cm3. With this power, the motorcycle accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in less than 9 seconds and reaches 135 km/h. Not a very exciting speed for us, but devilishly fast on Indian roads.
Orxa claims a range of 221 km for its roadster. The 8.9 kWh battery can recover 80% of its charge in 5 hrs, or even half that time with the fast charger. The brand does not specify the time required for a full charge...
A braking energy recovery system optimizes the Mantis's range. As always, the weight of an electric model is substantial. 182 kilos here, which is pretty hefty for a machine comparable to a 250, but no miracle: a battery weighs a lot!
The Mantis stands out for its all-aluminum frame and rear frame. The rest of the chassis is more conventional, with a 41 mm fork, one brake disc per wheel (320 mm / 230 mm), a Bybre radial front caliper with 4 pistons, narrow 110 and 130 mm tires on 17" rims and a preload-adjustable shock absorber.
The instrument cluster is more dapper, with a 5-inch TFT color display. Techno, the instrumentation provides all the essentials, as well as interactivity with a phone via Bluetooth. Its Linux-based OS supports an app with navigation, smartphone notifications and motorcycle usage statistics.
It will cost 360,000 rupees to buy. Marketing in Europe is highly unlikely. In fact, few motorcycles from this country dare to venture into Europe.
