or custom?!? The style may not suit all bikers, but the fact remains that it's a very popular genre all over the planet, and one that appeals far more than we might sometimes imagine.
indian manufacturer Royal Enfield made no mistake when it unveiled the Super Meteor 6 and a half at the last Eicma show in Milan in November, the big sister of its little Meteor 350.
developed on the basis of the proven 648 cm3 twin already used on the brand's Continental GT and Interceptor models, this Super Meteor 650 is positioned as an elegant medium-displacement cruiser. The air/oil-cooled in-line twin develops a maximum power output of 47 hp and 52.3 Nm of torque. This means it meets the standards required for A2 license compatibility. It features a six-speed gearbox, multi-plate clutch and chain drive - all tried-and-tested classics.
the frame, consisting of a steel backbone, was developed by the British engineers at Harris Performance, as is often the custom at Royal-Enfield. The aim of this chassis was to keep the center of gravity as low as possible, for excellent handling. With its 1,500 mm wheelbase and overall length of 2,260 mm, this bike offers a fairly elongated silhouette. Its 43 mm inverted fork and twin rear shock provide 120 and 101 mm travel respectively, bringing the seat height to 740 mm. The announced weight with 90% fuel (15.7 l tank) and oil is 241 kg, no mean feat indeed, but the low geometry should make it easy to forget. The contained size of the rear tire, 150/80 x 16, should also contribute to the overall handling.
the Super Meteor is also equipped with an elegant dashboard featuring two circular dials, the speedometer dial incorporating a central LCD screen displaying all the data and information required for riding.
last but not least , the main selling point of this new Royal Enfield cruiser will of course be its price, which is low compared to the rest of the range. A price that approaches, but doesn't quite reach, €8,000.
a more touring-oriented version will also be offered in the catalog, with a high bubble, a passenger backrest and a more comfortable seat for the passenger.
For younger riders, the name of this custom bike is obvious: it takes the idea of the Meteor and improves on it with a bigger engine, more equipment and more cachet.
Except that there is a precedent. The manufacturer already had a Super Metor 700 in its catalog in the '50s. This machine also had a parallel twin, but with a 692 cm3 capacity. This enabled it to produce 36 hp for just 190 kilos. It was replaced by the Interceptor in 1962.
