presentation of the 865 AMERICA LT 2014
when Triumph turned its attention to the cruiser-touring category, it didn't do things by halves. The Rocket III Touring made a striking entrance with its colossal 2.3-liter three-cylinder engine. Enough to hold its own with the Americans, ignore the Japanese, and carve out a place for itself on the open road.
More sensibly, another Triumph decided to follow in its wake and offer a taste of it. The 865 America was chosen to counter the winds and whims of gloveboxes. A little accessory work, a direct factory graft, and with a little zest, Hinckley transforms a "Bonnevilliste" custom into an America LT. This Light Touring makes long-distance riding a pleasure. Yet there's nothing exceptional about this recipe, which Kawasaki has already applied to its VN 900 Light Tourer. Take a pair of suitcases and a sissy-bar and hang it on the hindquarters; complete with a windscreen and mix with the twin-cylinder.
the America LT, as a good British bike, knows how to distinguish itself, especially when it comes to motorization, which is of course taken from the eponymous custom bike. The cylinders are parallel, in the historic layout of the Bonneville of yesteryear, i.e. half a century of nostalgia whispered between the cooling fins. 61 horsepower and some 7 mkg of sweat, to cruising nicely. Don't expect to take on a Twin Cam, but that's not why you'll buy it. If that's what you're after, turn a page and enjoy the 1700 Thunderbird LT.
From America to LT, it's the same engine and chassis. The solution is as classic as it gets in this business: a cradle-type steel frame with a 41 mm fork, two shocks on the bottom, big tires for looks and braking elements somewhere between satisfying and effective. Take it for a spin and leave the wind at your side. That's why it's so inviting.
