presentation of the 1200 BONNEVILLE T 120 ACE 2019
"Shall we go for a drink?". The magic phrase that heralds every unfortunate and/or memorable evening. Or punctuating a stage in the majority of motorcycle tours.
Rarely in our country, but more often in England, a few daring souls might reply:
-"Yep. Why not theACE café?
- London's a bit far, isn't it? And let's not even talk about those in Barcelona, Lucerne, Orlando, Beijing... Why not the one in Finland while we're at it..... Stubborn, aren't you!
- Never mind. Find the bar and I'll bring the ACE with us. I bet one lather I blow your mind, two that it'll put you on the derch.
- Why don't you go get your grindstone and lay off the booze in the morning?"
Let's leave our fictitious friends to their shouting match and find out what all the fuss is about. Because it wasn't so crazy to want to bring the ACE with you. For 2019, Triumph is offering a limited edition Bonneville T120 emblazoned with the coat of arms of this cult site of English biker culture (and beyond). A similar partnership gave birth to the 900 Thruxton ACE in 2015.
Starting with the 1200 Bonneville Black, the factory gave it a "Matt Storm Grey" paint job, embellished with "Stripe" stripes and an imposing "Head Down, Hold" motif on the tank. We added a whole series of ACE logos, installed a few accessories (medallions, indicators), removed the passenger handle to clean up the rear and changed the seat.
A very dark, very discreet tribute, far from standing out from a standard T120 Black. Except...
Except in two respects. Firstly, only 1,400 ACEs will be produced. Secondly, this Bonnie will be delivered with a numbered certificate signed by Triumph CEO Nick Bloor and Ace Cafe director Mark Wilsmore.
The mechanical and technical base has been preserved in its entirety. In addition to the styling that has made the Bonneville so famous, both then and now, it now meets the expectations of the right hand with a 1200cc engine that's full of drive and fun. Its acceleration and heaving heart are far more demonstrative than the 80 hp advertised.
This Englishwoman's wish is to be vintage on the outside, then modern on the inside, with ABS, two riding modes, traction control, USB connection, heated grips, anti-dribble clutch, LED lights... A Triumph can also be recognized by the technology it packs.
Did they find their bar? One more mystery for London. Triumph, on the other hand, has found the one that matches its Classic range. Perhaps a warmer, less taciturn decor would have attracted more enthusiasm. Unless this ACE doesn't want to overshadow Bonneville's other limited series for 2019, the Diamond.
