Except in off-road racing, two-stroke engines haven’t been very popular for a very long time. Only enthusiasts and veterans will get a thrill reading names like RD 350 LC, RG 500 Gamma, 250 KR-1S, 750 H2, Mito 125, RS 250...
But some brands refuse to let two-stroke engines fade into obscurity, such as Langen with its Two Stroke or Veloce with its Aperion and Ethereal.

A mini-tornado

Speaking of which, the Ethereal—this café racer will serve as an entry point to the Banbury-based brand (near Oxford). A more accessible and less extreme bike thanthe Aperion and its monstrous 8-cylinder engine. But it also promises a thrill ride with its 500 cm³ V4 and 145 chevaux.

Quite the power-to-weight ratio, isn’t it?! That’s why two-stroke engines have always had their share of fans. Fewer parts, less weight, plenty of power— and less-than-enviable emissions. Veloce has created a rather unique 4-cylinder engine, featuring two crankshafts, carburetor-fed intake, and a particularly compact design. Dubbed the “L4” for its 90° L-angle configuration, this engine is capable of producing 106 kW at 12,500 rpm.
As for the primary drive, it features a reverse-angle configuration: the output shaft is positioned between the two crankshafts, diagonally above the transmission.

Mental Focus and Experience Are the Only Controls

On the other hand, forget about traction control, anti-wheelie systems, slip management, and other safety features. Nothing has been specified in this regard. And sincethe Aperion doesn’t have any of these features despite its 280 ch, why would Veloce install them on a machine that’s half as powerful?

The Ethereal prefers to be equipped with more “tangible” features, such as a large inverted fork, a machined aluminum single-sided swingarm, large brake rotors front and rear, a very aggressive riding position, a radiator tucked away in the rear (like the old Benelli Tornados), laser-sintered alloy exhausts, and a minimalist steel-tube frame.

For die-hard enthusiasts only

The weight is unknown, but it won’t be heavy. Unlike the price, which is expected to easily exceed 50,000 euros. The brand has announced that the Ethereal will be slightly cheaper than its big brother, which costs nearly 90,000 euros.

In any case, when you love something... you go all out, right? Because once you’ve cleared the price hurdle, you’ll need to stay highly motivated: only 48 units of the Veloce 500 Ethereal will be produced, and they’ll be street-legal only in the United Kingdom. As for Euro 5+ emissions standards and rider-assistance features? It leaves them in the dust.
