Electric motorcycles are the stuff of many promises, fantasies more or less accessible, rare realizations and surreal projections. A new player has joined the fray: Vigo. An English company that began working on the subject in 2015, and has come up with a sports car with exceptional, even breathtaking, specifications. For what range?

beautiful, futuristic, racy. The sketches of the Vigo herald a desirable motorcycle as long as it is designed for performance. But we're only going to see sketches. For the moment, the project has only produced computer projections. Nothing has filtered out about the choice of suspension, frame type, brakes... A few data on dimensions, a hint of elegance with the single-arm, and future specificities usually in the realm of futuristic films or Tesla productions.

this Vigo would like to turn all preconceptions and shortcomings about electric motorcycles on their head. Like all sports bikes, it seems to live for speed. The motor, housed in the hub of the rear wheel, appears full of energy. 120 hp are claimed, giving a top speed of 290 km/h and a 0 to 100 km/h time of 3.2 sec. More percussive, the torque warns of a massacre for the rear tire. Over 35 mkg - the equivalent of a 2-liter car engine with turbo. Let's stay with the bike for a better comparison. The most impressive current production sports bike, the Kawasaki H2R, sends out 16.8 mkg; half that of the Vigo.

let's raise one of the perennial problems facing electron-powered vehicles: range. Increasing it mainly involves enlarging the size of the accumulator. This comes at the price of rapidly increasing weight. At Zero Motorcycles, the Model S can go from 288 km of range (cool city driving) for 185 kilos to 359 km for 205 kilos. That's an extra 3.55 km for one kilogram.
The Vigo could reach a range of 640 km. Incredible! That's a lot of mass to store the necessary energy. So, will this sports car weigh 250? 300? 350 kilos?
Barely 160 kilos. How can this be? Designers report a new battery technology offering higher density, lower weight and faster charging and discharging speeds. Yep. Announcements of a battery revolution, justified by laboratory tests and a market launch in a few years' time, are something we've seen every week on tech sites for the past 15 years.
Let's smile less narcissistically with the practical aspects of the machine, planned with a trunk in the false tank (like the Honda NC 750), GPS in the large TFT screen, keyless start and a smartphone control interface.

to bring this project to fruition, Vigo Motorcycles is counting on a crowdfunding campaign to get the model into production by mid-2019. Except that the projected timetable has fallen well behind schedule. Out of passion, out of hope, we want to believe. Suddenly, we discover the projected price - barely more than an MT-09- and we realize that the cocktail is no longer serious, and is now rooted in fiction. Pity, once again. Investors have made no mistake, and online investment looks..... uncertain.
