presentation of the XVS 1300 A MIDNIGHT STAR 2009
a page is being turned, a generation is disappearing, and a new era is dawning for Yamaha custom bikes. The Dragstar family is slowly disappearing, to be replaced by a new family with a warm, deep name: the Midnight Star. The imposing XV 1900 laid the foundations and is now supported by the more accessible but equally interesting XVS 1300 Midnight Star.
new generation, new engine. The 1300 does away with the traditional air motor - its twin is a water-cooled 4-valve per cylinder, with fuel injection and variable ignition. Forged pistons churn in super-square cylinders. A mill delivering its 73 hp at 5,500 rpm, backed up by almost 11 mkg of torque at 4,000 rpm.
As with the 1900, Yam has filtered vibrations and uses the same type of double balancer as on the big Midnight Star. Each balancer is positioned on either side of the crankshaft, ensuring compactness. The XVS 1300 engine is also equipped with roller rockers for valve actuation - this is the second of the manufacturer's models to be fitted with this technology (theXT 660 was the investigator). The system is said to deliver better engine performance at low speeds, as well as a "greater feeling of pulsation".
With the mechanical look in mind, the engineers set out to conceal the liquid-cooling components as well as possible. So, with this concealed design and its fins, the 60° twin plays the modern card in a stylish old-fashioned outfit.
According to the manufacturer, "the silencer has been developed to produce a deep sound that perfectly complements the character of this bike". It's true that Yam made a name for itself with the original sound of the last-generation R1; but with today's noise standards, Euro 3 pollution, and other castrato tricks, we'll have to rely more on the twin-cylinder's character than on its vocals. Check it out on a road test.
new double cradle frame using the engine as a stiffening element, shock absorber hidden under the chassis, 298 mm diameter triple brake disc.... there's no shortage of technical arguments, but it's the "Streamline" plastic that will catch the eye. Its refined headlamp optics invite us to discover a machine that takes up the elegant aesthetic canons unveiled by the 1900 Midnight Star. Mounted on the handlebars, the softly lit instrument panel provides you with the essentials, without burdening you with a rev counter (not really useful on this kind of machine).
dragstars have had their day - Midnights have taken up the torch. After its offensive in the sports bike segment(new R6, R1 SP), the big hairy roadsters(MT-01, FZ1) and the finally fun and quirky ( 250 Tricker, MT-03), Yamaha is positioning a new generation of good-looking customs on the market.

This bike is amazing, and I was surprised to discover that it handles much better than the BM (except in hairpins). Comfortable, low fuel consumption. I've got a big windscreen that protects really well on the freeway. Cruising speed 150 (or more) with no problem. The engine is great, no big American chopper vibrations. To be honest, less torque than the BM. Shortcomings: the 1st and 2nd gear slam into the ground, although with practice you can limit this, and the fact that you can't fit a helmet in the original panniers, which is a real shame.
The big plus: with this bike, you'll be "cruising", and what's more, it's really superb, with elegant lines highlighted by its chrome.

excellent engine with plenty of torque that makes overtaking easy (be careful though, as you can go from 90 to 12 just by accelerating to overtake if you're not careful)
bought new, no worries with
optional equipment impeccable, but beware of the high windscreen, which is not flat enough for tall people, and drips stay on it, so you have to be able to see over it just by raising your head
no special maintenance required apart from normal oil changes as the belt is notched (does not slip at all in wet weather) Rating : 4/5 Respond to alain56
Perfect, safe handling.

Bought at the end of 2010 with 5000kms, I've been riding this machine for 20 months and have swallowed 30000kms with it... nothing but happiness. Once you've found your rhythm and the right gears, it drives itself.
For the past 1 year, I've hitched a trailer to it, so I can travel the roads of France and Navarre.
Average fuel consumption (l to 5.5l per 100).
For those who are interested, there's a forum called "Passion Midnight Star" where you can get all the opinions and advice you need on this fantastic bike. Rating : 5/5 Respond to Tonton Jeff

Running-in is my penance, but the little I've seen makes me predict the longest... romance I've ever known... for a motorcycle, of course. It's all there!
What keeps me stable is that... when I need to, I add an extra cm to the handlebar travel (running-in values...) Rating : 5/5 Respond to gericaf
i've got 7000km on the clock
my fuel consumption is down to 5.2l per 100 km at authorized speeds averaging around 100
even in second gear, i'm able to pick up less than before. i'm still very happy with my purchase
yam's bubble, though the largest, insufficient for +1.80m after 250km Rating : 5/5 Respond to albizan
according to the driving, very good ergonomics, trip in the rain with original tires impeccable, duo very good, noise pot a little on top at the beginning then finally account on long trips it's good .easy cleaning
i like the km that starts on reserve

The 1000Kms service has just been carried out
I'm 1m68 tall and 63 years old
In town: very manoeuvrable, but you have to play a lot with the clutch!
On the road at 90kms/h:You have to reach this speed for the 5th gear to feel comfortable
On the open road: Between 110 and 120 mph, it's a delight to drive, and its reserves are considerable
Pick-up is excellent for this type of bike
Current fuel consumption is around 5.5l/km, which is very low for this displacement
Roadholding is very reassuring
Comfort is adequate for solo riding (my wife doesn't ride my bikes)
The sound is pleasant, and if you push the gears a little, it likes to growl!
It's currently fitted with a Yamaha windscreen.3 sizes are available.I chose the 15-inch as the others would be too high for me.they're really superb and moderately priced
For the cleaning I appreciate the wheels with sticks!
See you soon biker friends. Rating : 5/5 Respond to PAT BENSON
