Sport

driven out of the big-sport category by its turbulent R1 sibling, the Thunderace now expresses itself in a niche more suited to its pretensions. First of all, comfort is surprisingly good: the suspension is efficient and enhances the bike's performance while respecting the occupants' backs. Yesterday's sports car is close to today's sport-GT. The driving position is far from radical, making it easy to get to grips with and enjoy its qualities on all types of road. Less nimble than the current canon, it's easier to tame, with flawless roadholding (even on uneven surfaces) and a torquey engine. Full-bodied in the low to mid-range, it delivers fabulous acceleration and top-level performance. It's a pity that the gearbox, which is very well spaced, isn't more pleasant to use. Much less demanding than the R1, it also has a wider range of action; its weight will handicap it somewhat on the track, especially in comparison with its sibling. We regret the lack of protection, but let's not forget that the Thunderace is basically a sports bike. Its conversion to touring is not a choice, but the result of the evolution of the species.

French Fazerman Model 1996
I've had 3 and I'm currently looking for my 4th, thinking (at the time of writing and my 52nd birthday) that I'll finish my motorcycling life with it
I've just sold my very demanding and turbulent (and without electronic aids!) carbureted 98 R1, which I couldn't ride any more: my hands tingle and my body aches as soon as you try to get into it! Not to mention the perennial humility lessons and handlebars!

So I got myself a Fazer 1000 (which is still a very good bike), but the footpegs that scrape the ground when you're not at the limit of the tire make me tired. And then I remembered that I'd experienced "sport friendliness" with my previous 3 Thunderaces, some time ago. So, BANCO! I remembered, it's decided, I want her
I'll just make an effort not to complain about its heaviness, it's not as agile as the Fazer 1000 and even less so the R1 98. But what 1000cc sports bike can offer 300 km of range when you're on the move (or 240 mini when you're shouting at it)?
A thick seat that's not too hard on the wrists, a 4-legged engine that drinks oil but is so torquey that you forget to grumble about the 5-speed gearbox, and above all, an ability to make you happy and a face that leaves no one indifferent. A very stable and reassuring chassis (even if it's not a gazelle)
To sum up -> I LOVE it

French OB1
I love this bike, which I've had for 15 years. I improved the handling with an R1 2000 front fork and a good Ohlins rear fork. I recommend it. And as I'm a bit old myself, I fitted a high bubble and ABM multi-clip handlebars to enhance the ride. With the Moillot comfort saddle, it's really perfect. Now, at 80 MKM, I need to rebuild the engine and gearbox, which can't take it anymore... on the program: YZF 6-speed gearbox, Wiseco and AAC pistons + clutch bell that's marked. I bought a BMW 1000 Xr but I miss my Thunderace
Sincerely

135.000 on the odometer, 144 on the dyno, oil change every 5,000 and still no problems, which is why I own 2 identical ones ✌️ Rating : 5/5
I recently dyno'd my 1997 thunderace and after 24 years of service, it's developing 143.7hp out of its original 144. It's fabulous, it's a simply crazy bike to recommend to experienced two-wheelers and those looking for a thrill Rating : 5/5
French Nonohtc1973 Model 1997
49 years old, 1.95m
Owned the 1997 model between 2002 and May 2006, red and white. It was my very first bike once I had my driving licence. Sold it after 50000km. It consumed quite a lot of oil, and I always had a can under the seat. It got really hot in town, but came back to life as soon as you got off it. I'm 1.95m tall and I rode without a problem. The creases in the pants became a bit annoying behind the knees over long distances, but I think that's the same on any bike for tall people like me... otherwise it was top-notch, even for novices like me. Today I'm thinking of buying a 1000 cbf for a more comfortable body position.

Hi, you can mount ABM multiclip half handlebars which enhance the riding position... My life has changed with these. My back no longer hurts on my Thunderace.

Hi all, this is a purist's bike, as they don't make them anymore. Right now, I'm on a full 145 hp, 77900 kilometers: it's still pushing just as hard!!!, not like today's electronics-packed bikes, which I'd say are for "kids"!!! finally, a piece of advice not to be put into the hands of novices, thank you ... bought new in 97.149000kms later,a broken speedo stem and gallons of oil swallowed, nothing else..
i've never had any complaints about this bike, which I hope will double this mileage again, with the same form and reliability!
very easy to maintain, with few electronics, economical to ride, only the passenger could complain about the relative comfort
if I had to do it all over again...without hesitation!

I've just bought a '96 with only 12,000 kms on the clock

I'm delighted with this machine
I'm not very tall (1.69m) and my feet are very flat.
The only problem is a 5-speed gearbox, why????
Although the gearbox is very well spaced, we would have liked a 6!

Handling is very good
Misses a watch and a gauge for a gt sport it would have been the top

Not very greedy when driving cool

In short, a very good machine

How old is the petrol in your tank and in your carburettors ???
Do you have sparks at your spark plugs?
Did you accidentally press the red engine stop button?
If your fuel line isn't clogged, if your jets aren't clogged, and if you've got spark at your spark plugs, it should start.

i recently changed the old battery, which was no longer holding its charge, and now, after 2 starts in a row, the new battery has died. I'd be inclined to say that my alternator has given up the ghost given its year of origin. am I right to believe that in your opinion? Rating : 4/5

good durable motorcycle. moreover i have the 1996 which still runs in 2017 with the mileage counter which has returned to zero for some time with a turbulent previous life. it is always as pleasant to ride and costs little to maintain its only real downside is the oil consumption which is the known defect of this motorcycle but which does not make it a less reliable motorcycle it is only necessary to think of putting oil has occasion.in short a good old machine Rating : 4/5
French MARCO33 Model 1998
It's a real pleasure to drive, with comfort and maneuverability that many 1000 Cm3s would like to have. As for performance, it breathes very low, and that's the main thing, then =music!! and when you let off the throttle, you're quickly 50 to 60 km/h below it, so engine braking and the EXUP system are top-notch* I'll be looking at the files of its rivals to see how much torque they have, because that's the strength of this beautiful machine. I had a full-size 2000 model.
Good machine in every respect, reliable, with acceptable comfort for a sports bike (except for the width of the fuel tank, in my opinion, which forces you to spread your legs quite wide).
Noisy and not very pleasant gearbox.
Nothing to criticize, but nothing to glorify either. A reasonable choice rather than a passionate one!

i've just exchanged my thundercat 600 for the thunderace 1000 it's a real head turner, although the thundercat is the top of the 600 powerful flexible and not too tiring on long trips, on my thunderace I would like to put a handlebar higher because yesterday having done 350 km in a row I arrived broken even this morning still broken, by raising the handlebar I think it will be more pleasant apart from it tears, for the oil I would like to know the best to put, and if possible technical views of this bike

Concerning the 1000 Thunderace that I bought second hand, there has been a lot of criticism about the 90's macadam that was on it, I have personally gnawed the michelin bibendoms on the sides and it has never stalled! I have just acquired a set of michelin pilot sport it will surely be better, but the bike is really healthy on the angle. What do you think biker friends? I have no prejudice, I observe Rating : 5/5

4th bike in just 2 years of riding. first a 750 dr to cut my teeth, then a 600 ZZR, a CBR 1100XX which works well but is too linear and finally, since a few days, the Thunderace: superb torque for quiet turns or howling as you like, it's always very safe and fairly comfortable (except for the wrists which take a hell of a beating on bumpy roads)

hi, 15 years renting motorcycles and in May I fell for this bike with 36000km of 98, all the above comments are right, I'll add that it is BEAUTIFUL, leather seat in red / white, wheel wash, painted front mirrors, integrated rear indicators, colored bubble and a line ARROW, attention it messes up in a roar after 5000trs....A two it is perfect Rating : 5/5

i've had mine for 1 year now, and i'm not about to leave it. doing a bit of maintenance myself, you could say that it's not an engine, but a clock. and for two-up riding, really great. gone on holiday with my wife, top-case tank bag and rider bag, after 3000 km, i can confirm that the thunderace holds up very well under load and that if you ask it for power, it's always there to sastify you. as for the oil, it's really surprising, because it doesn't consume regularly. it depends on how you ride. in a duo and after 2000 km under load, 1/4 , not + even in the mountains. but you have to keep an eye on the level as a real biker should do before setting off

Hi everyone. I bought mine in 1999 with 24Mkm, today it has 96Mkm on the odometer. Needless to say, I fell in love with it. It's the best all-round bike on the market. Breathtakingly torquey engine, unflappable handling, ultra-safe braking. Remarkable comfort for this type of machine. It's true that it uses a lot of oil, and that it's heavier than other sports bikes (although it's the same weight as a 916, just so you know), but once you get to know it, it's hard not to fall under its spell. I've tried a lot of other bikes, but I've never found an equivalent. I'm keeping it! What's more, it seems very reliable
See you on the road.

I too have one and it's clear, for sporty use on the road, it's the best bike in the world! accomplished sportsman, it has the added advantage of being comfortable, of having a good range. it is extraordinarily versatile! only weak points, its bubble a little tight and its weight a little high! but apart from that, it's a little-known work of art! It's a very endearing bike, full of driving and sporting qualities. It's hard to find fault with it...maybe the lighting is a bit bad, but then I usually ride in daylight! Changing the spark plugs is a bit of a pain, but that's only every 20,000km. Oh yes, there's a fault: a slight consumption of engine oil of about 1 glass per 1000km. it's like that, there's nothing to do except keep an eye on the level. As for the qualities, the list is too long... Bonne route. Rating : 5/5

I've been riding it for 2 years with great pleasure, and I own the GT version prepared by Yamaha: -Different fairing top with high bubble -Classic handlebar (from TDM I think) -Lowered passenger seat and footrest -Advanced controls (shifter and rear brake) With its touring-style riding position and this protection, I have the advantages of the rigor, peachiness (that's saying a lot...) and liveliness of a sports bike with the comfort of a much heavier bike. Bonne route à tous. Rating : 5/5

superb bike. i lost mine, but since i've been riding (1973) of all the bikes i've had, i don't hesitate for a moment, it's the best. superb handling, reliable, quick in the hand, thunderous mill (that's almost its name), absolute confidence in this bike. take care of yours and especially watch out on the road.
