presentation of the MT-07 700 2014

From seriousness to fun. Accustomed to offering numerous variations of its 4-cylinder engines on a host of machines and roadsters (FZ and similar), Yamaha is adding a dose of fizz to its range. With the MT-07, there's movement in the tuned roadster clan. The medium-displacement passport becomes less chubby, divides the number of cylinders by 2, the twin is invited to the party, and the dark side of Japan invades the manufacturer's entry-level range. All-new twin, cross-plane spirit, MT-09 street lieutenant, this little devil arrives to shake things up:

A beginner's bike? A bit, but above all, an introduction to the pleasure of riding, with that little character offered by the twin-cylinder. Kawa understood this a while ago with its ER-6, which has been a market leader for some time. A little further back, the Suzuki SV 650 took the sector by storm. The recipe that works for these 3 machines: a cool twin, a light bike, a mouth that hits the spot!
Yam enters this space, leaving the XJ6 to fend for itself with the flexibility of its 4-legged frame. The MT-07 is drier, more playful, with bits of cross-plane in its all-new mill.
A few figures to whet your appetite: 75 horsepower and almost 7 mkg of torque. Figures we're used to seeing on this kind of machine and engine. The Yam block features 270° timing, as on the TDM 900 and XTZ 1200, and unequal ignition intervals. The aim is to optimize torque distribution, a philosophy adopted by the M1, R1, MT-09 and now the MT-07.
Other technical features of the CP2 block are more traditional yet modern: 4 valves per cylinder, forged pistons, centralized and lowered mass with an exhaust under the bike, major work on fuel consumption, and a new 6-speed gearbox.

Yamaha MT-07 700 2014
the MT-07's twin promises responsive, predictable behavior, with the roughness that makes this architecture more endearing than a polished 4-cylinder. This character is further expressed by the machine's nervous, tortured design. It's as if pieces of the MT-09 were captured by the Harajuku district to create this silhouette of angles, rebellion and manga. The frame is almost lost in it, with its worked parts and striking minimalism.
The engine plays an essential role, as the main tubular steel structure rests on it, as does the swingarm. The asymmetrical, monocross-type swingarm is anchored to the crankcases. It's a nice, flattering feature, much more flattering than the square-sectioned arms we used to see on the basics of yesteryear.
To complete the chassis, Yam installs some fairly classic peripherals, from sufficient to serious. There's no need for an upside-down fork here, a standard 41 mm one will do just fine. Two 282 mm petal discs are fitted at the front, clamped by 4-piston monobloc calipers. Nice gear for a machine of this size. Especially since there's not much to brake. The bike weighs just 179 kilos... all wet. That's 26 kilos less than an XJ6.
The MT-07 is fitted with 17-inch, 10-spoke cast-aluminum wheels. The rubber is 120 mm at the front, and a surprising 180 mm at the rear. An incongruous dimension for the watts distributed by the CP2 - a 180, that's what you find on an R6. But looks, always looks.

No stranger to emotion, escaping from the gloomy or trendy corners of the world, the MT-07 is a welcome addition to Yamaha's entry-level range. This machine for young bikers, those who want to escape conformism, or night owls looking for a different taste, is sure to make a place for itself in the pack of cubs. The price is set at a bargain basement level, one of the factors that has made it one of the highlights of 2014. Keep an eye on it, as many of its rivals are starting to show signs of slowing down.

It'll soon be a year in 2 months that I've got it and 12/13000 km and I don't intend to change bike before at least early 2019.
Despite everything, I recognize that the rear shock absorber can be improved, as it tends to pump a bit too much on medium-surfaced roads, and especially when riding a duo, as soon as you get a bit livelier and it turns.
I'm definitely going to buy another one that's much more efficient and has a wider range of adjustments than the original, as I'm obliged to set it to almost maximum hardness. I weigh 80kg fully equipped, so that's not where it's coming from lol.
As for the rest, I've got a complete MIVV line, a KN-type air filter, and a booster plug, so I've got about 80 hp at the vilo, the engine is much more responsive and fuel consumption is even a little lower, as I never exceed 5.5l per 100 even when opening the throttle...

I took my driving test on this bike, and it's ideal for beginners!

The first time I went out of town with it I was really surprised by its acceleration!

Unfortunately I didn't buy it because it was too expensive for me, but if I'd had the money I'd have taken it without question!

In 2 years, there's a good chance I'll buy it in full.

Aucun regret
French Jeff2A Model 2017
I'm over 50 and often ride in a duo, in a region with rather contrasting terrain and where there are no freeways, and only a few km of 4-lane roads.
I've had my fill of sportbikes, and I don't really need a heavy roadster.
So I was looking for a versatile roadster that was powerful enough and above all very light, at a very reasonable second-hand price. In the end, the MT07 suits me perfectly, with its 180 kg in running order and 75 hp, and it's very well equipped for a machine in this segment and at this price.
Its aesthetics may annoy some, but they don't bother me at all: it looks like a mix of roadster and supermotard. The rear tire, with its size, provides very good handling, it's comfortable, it brakes well, it's playful and light, the engine is responsive and provides great sensations while remaining very economical.
Noise is discreet from the outset, but with an adaptable and approved exhaust system, you can hear it coming, even with the db killer.

The tank body is not made of plastic, but of metal, contrary to appearances. It's protected by two removable polyester side panels that go right up to the underside of the seat. Rating : 3/5

Why change rear suspension for road use?
The original mount is more than adequate.
All you need to do is adjust the spring to suit your weight. If it's for touring, in that case get another machine with more watts!
The original mirrors are well placed and of the right size, and don't break the bike's lines.
It's true that the original noise is too discreet for my taste, in which case fit a homologated adaptable exhaust - and invest in this purchase rather than a rear suspension, given that there are new lines on the market for less than 400 euros.

I haven't tried it myself, and I'd like to. Judging by what people are saying, it looks like a good bike.
But there's only one thing holding me back, and I think it'll prevent me from signing the order form, and that's its looks. I find it really unattractive, even horrible (sorry, but that's my opinion).
But I'm sure it's an excellent bike at a great price.

Almost 1 year and 10,000km into my ownership, it's a great bike!
i'm not going to mention all its qualities, which have already been mentioned on a number of sites and forums, but rather the 3 "defaults" which, for me, are a nuisance on a daily basis!

First of all, the speedometer is complete, with no annoying reflections in sunlight, but it's super badly placed. I'm 1m91 tall, and to see the speedometer I have to take my eyes off the road and lower my head... which in Parisian traffic is pretty dangerous!

Then there's the range. The bike consumes nothing, on average I'm at 4.0l / 4.2l but the tank is really too small, I do 80km a day and I have to go to the gas station very regularly if I don't want to be too close to the reserve! 2-3L more capacity wouldn't have hurt.

The third and final flaw, one of the bike's strong points, can in this case become a weak point, is its width! Yes, it's tip-top, it fits everywhere, it's accessible to the greatest number of people, young and old alike.
But I'm tall, and between my legs it's just TOO thin. When I squeeze my legs, my thighs don't touch the tank, but my knees do... not great for keeping your balance in certain conditions, and with the knees pressing against the tank, the paint scratches...

This is my opinion, based on my experience with this bike =)

Petite taille sur MT-07 ?

Hello,

I love its look and features, but I'm wondering if it's suitable for petite 1m60 people? Does it touch at least the ball of the foot?

French Seb
My answer comes a little late, but may be of use to others...

I'm 1.76m tall and I put both feet flat on the ground with my knees barely bent. So in my opinion, yes, 1.60m is fine, but on your toes!

To complete the other opinions, if you're planning to take a passenger, he'll have a lot of trouble leaning on the tank, which is very narrow and leans forward... That's all there is to it.

And as much as I love this bike, I have a bone to pick with its suspension!

C'est simple: elle est presque parfaite
French Model 2014
This is probably my 25th bike.

Its faults:
1) the mirrors are too short to see clearly
2) very discreet noise

Its advantages? everything else:
- weight
- power
- braking
- roadholding
- ridiculous fuel consumption in relation to its power: I'm currently at 4.3 litres/100km in town, and 3 liters in the country! (cool driving).
- build quality (especially compared to current Hondas)

Ideally, the rear suspension should be replaced (390 euros)

In short, it's an ideal motorcycle: playful, lightweight, comfortable despite the small seat, all at a very reasonable price.

Hello, I own an MT-07 and in the original configuration with 1M80 I still feel fatigue in my legs which are quite bent, so I would be tempted to say no, now maybe there are kits to raise the seat a little, or move the footrests forward a little (which are quite far back) to make it more comfortable ;) I advise you in any case to try it to get an idea :) Rating : 5/5

I bought it at the end of March 2014, it is bridled and has 12,000km on the odometer.... One thing to say, it's all fun! It's fun behind its handlebars, its speedometer, light and responsive. It's ideal for my daily commute, with brakes that bite. On small roads (not runways), I'm a hornet without blushing when I'm on the throttle! Its twin hits hard in the low and mid-range. The only downside is the sound ^^\' a 125 noise... I've just bought a carbon akrapovic and I don't know what to say about it. Top speed 184km/h with clutch and average consumption 4.6L/100 with normal driving. Rating : 5/5

The rear tire is very useful for those who like to take it easy and have fun in fast (or medium-fast) corners.
I've been riding for 50 years, and with my old bikes, I often have to catch the rear wheel slipping (thank God I still have the reflexes).
As for the rest, those who've had Nortons or Triumphs will rediscover the pleasure of the TWIN, but with the added bonus of perfect roadholding, and brakes rather than retarders

Good machine. Light, torquey, powerful, fun to ride. A little too much tendency to lift in 1 - 2 even though it's always fun. The gearbox is a little rough on the downshift (the bike stings a little forward even though it's not high in rpm). All in all, a very playful bike with a very good weight, power, price, braking quality and aesthetics ratio. Perhaps what's missing is an inverted fork for a more precise front end, a more comfortable seat and a small bubble to keep the wind off the bike. Rating : 4/5

To try it is to adopt it. I ordered it, adding a windscreen and changing the seat, which is a bit firm. At the bottom, at the top of the revs, it's always there. it moves forward, it brakes hard, it's light.
for the price, there's nothing out there that can keep up.
3 weeks lead time, but be careful, it's already August today.
i received it on 14/06, negotiating a 35KW, but it was unbridled when it came off the truck, which reduced the lead time.

I tested it in the 35kW version in Bordeaux, accelerating hard at red lights, a little on the motorway and on the main road, and finally on the return journey, the dashboard showed me an average of 4.2 L/100 ... I think it's possible to go under 4L with a relaxed driving style, but when you pull on it, it's bound to consume a lot. The guy who passed before me consumed just over 6 L/100 on average :) Rating : 5/5
