Yamaha has renewed its confidence in him, but the competition is more reactive. BM, KTM and Triumph are not slacking off.

In fact, when was the last time this machine was touched up? 2014, if I'm not mistaken. Faced with over-armed competition, Yamaha's trail-GT chose to evolve discreetly.

Don't look for stylistic differences. Design-wise, it's limited to imperceptible changes: LED indicators and new headlamp covers. On board, you'll find an all-digital instrument panel with a bonus gearshift display. On the 1200 Super-T "évo", the equipment is both richer and poorer. The center stand and top-case support have disappeared. On the other hand, the seat is more comfortable, the bubble can be manually adjusted to 4 positions and a cruise control has been added. For 2017, Euro4 standards have been introduced.

On the engine side, 2 horses join the stud farm. Nothing earth-shattering, and that's not the most interesting part. What is interesting are the engine modifications (camshaft, piston rings, enlarged intake and exhaust ports, new exhaust) designed to make the engine more flexible. The twin now boasts 112 hp and almost 12 mkg of torque. Add to this the D-mode system, which offers two enhanced mappings, for city or sportier riding, and you get a machine that's more fun to ride.

Super Ténéré 1200 XTZ 1ere mouture: Yamaha's big trail-GT. High, majestic, with Touareg accents and a desire for space. It's taken Yamaha a good many years to offer its loyal customers a machine that takes up the torch of the 90s adventurer. But today's XTZ 1200 has little in common with the 750 adventurer born in 1989. It smelled of warm sand and the bewitching perfumes of rally-raids... Today, it flirts with grand touring. Its name still evokes the famous African desert, but will it be putting its wheels down between the ruts of the Atlas? Rather, in the spokes of the BMW R 1200 GS. The debauchery of technology and on-board equipment speak for themselves.

But before we delve into the bowels of the biggest XT ever, let's take a moment to be charmed by this vessel of the sands. Nostalgics will have guessed, hidden in the watermark, a hint of the spirit of the Gallic-colored machines that raced towards the pink lake.
The cat's eyes are intimidating, mysterious and, above all, a far cry from the strange look of the 660 Ténéré's little cousin. And if its build seems imposing to you, with its thick shoulders and lanky frame (in short, not too well-suited to the traps of the dunes), the Yam staff have nonetheless developed this bike for several types of trip: the European version of asphalt road or the dusty version of track.

The ancestor had a parallel twin - the 2010 XTZ will do the same. Except that the numbers have swelled, a lot. To launch into the 2nd decade of the 3rd millennium, Yam has brought us a brand-new 1199 cm3 mill. Set at 270°, with 2 balancing weights and a dry sump, this big mill isn't all about power.

And you know what you'll find in trail bikes these days? Electronics, galore. And not just to regulate the mixture according to the 2 lambda probes. No, there are bits of MotoGP in there, like in the R1 hypersport. We've added YCC-T and traction control to the right-hand controls. In other words, an electronic throttle backed up by a system that measures wheel rotation speeds. As soon as the going gets rough, Traction Control intervenes in a choice of 3 modes:
<img style="float: left;" src="/img/lazy_bike.webp" alt=""" class="lazy" data-original="/yamaha/XT-1200-Z-Super-Tenere-2010-pieces-moteur.jpg"><br>1) TCS1 (standard): kicks in as soon as the rear wheel slips. <br>2) TCS2: reduces the effect of Traction Control and allows a slight slippage.<br>3) Off mode: totally disconnected.<br>In addition to Traction Control, different maps are available:<br>a) sport "S": instant response for more performance <br>b) touring "T": provides greater flexibility </p><p>When it comes to traction, the tuning fork brand hasn't done things by halves. On the braking side, there's something big here too. No radial mounting (not really necessary for a trail bike...) for the brake calipers, but a nice nod to the sport - they look just like those on the 2002-2003 R1. For fun, the discs are petal-type, a.k.a. wave-type. For efficiency, ABS is standard, combined with a coupled braking system. Braking from the front? Coupling is automatically distributed between front and rear, taking into account speed, crew weight and lever effort. Are you braking from the rear? It doesn't engage the front brake, to leave the rider free to control the front end, especially when riding off-road.</p><p>For the chassis of its trail 1200, Yam didn't opt for aluminum and puts its trust in a steel frame, better suited to mop-up trails. Up front, nothing less than a big 43 mm diameter inverted fork, adjustable for rebound, compression and preload. The rear shock doesn't have a compression adjuster, but the knob is easily accessible. The center of gravity and weight distribution have been carefully adjusted... But the weight is still a problem. 257 kg on this Phase II; 4 less than the first version, but still substantial. A handful of gravel less than an old Varadero, but some thirty kilos more than in Germany or Austria.</p><p><img style="float: right;" src="/img/lazy_bike.webp" alt=""" class="lazy" data-original="/yamaha/XT-1200-Z-Super-Tenere-2010-roulage-desert.jpg">Like many road-going machines, the Super Ténéré is equipped with a cardan drive. We won't have the superb single-arm drive of the Tokyo concept, but we'll take comfort in the low-maintenance nature of this type of transmission. It remains to be seen whether this drive shaft will rival the GS's formidable Paralever. Spoke rims are a welcome addition, especially if you're thinking of (deliberately) leaving the road for the track. The Yam has taken care of its protection, with an aluminum engine cover (standard in 2010 with the First Edition package) and radiators raised in the side panels, as on the Honda Varadero, which itself borrowed the idea from the VTR 1000 F. Less exposed, protected by imposing covers, the heat exchangers won't fear a suicidal rock or a sleepwalking fennec.

A trail bike through and through, the XTZ 1200 is designed for both upright and seated riding, thanks to the handlebar position and the structure of the footrests. Standard handguards are of course included, and the rear of the frame is reinforced to accommodate all the necessary junk, not forgetting the annoying little essentials when they're absent: 12 V socket, height-adjustable saddle (845 to 870 mm), adjustable windscreen, and acceptable range with the 23-liter fuel tank. A larger capacity might not have been a luxury... As for luggage and accessories, you'll have to dip into the options section.

Yam offers a great trail bike to rival the 1250 GS, 1200 Crosstourer, KTM 1090 Adventure and other adventurous machines - but the late 900 TDM was neither up to the task, nor in its temperament. The baroudeur that is the Super Ténéré has to fight in a segment where competition is the main battle today. To offer adventure better than the KTM Adventure, or travel like the BMS GS, or both? It's a daring gamble, but Yamaha isn't one to play its cards unless it has a very good game to follow.

I've had the Raid Edition since the beginning of 2020 = SO MUCH HAPPINESS! In the midst of everything that's being done with "innovations" we can do without, it's still a REAL (and beautiful) MOTORBIKE - 14,000 km this year: comfort, potato (whatever some of "our" testers say - well, sometimes I wonder if they've even sat on it ...), safety, top-notch front-end precision - And you can load it like a mule - As for the weight, I'm laughing!!!! It's true that these days you need "string" bikes - But we old-timers rode sport-GTs weighing over 270-280 kg (and it went everywhere)
NB before it I had 2 motorcycles with TFT screens "as they say": nothing but problems (the first changed after much palavering after 4 months, the second providing false information and sold as is (having warned the dealer who carried out the trade-in) - And pi it was motorcycles with 160 then 177 CV eh well ... it's useless (on the road) and with the ST we make exactly the same averages and if we want to get angry we send ... same

My beautiful bike... What a pleasure to ride, to go for a ride, to play in the hairpins of the Pyrenees or the Alps, to visit the chateaux of the Dordogne and to return home in peace... just 2 points that don't stop the pleasure... its weight when stationary, which disappears as soon as you reach 2km/h, and the reflection on the "dashboard" when the sun is high at the rear of the bike ... but who cares, it's comfortable, it's clever, it's got a powerful but controllable resource
12,000kms so far, and I'm not really interested in replacing my beautiful bike!

I'm back after 15 days and 5000km in the Western USA
The chassis is beyond reproach
The comfort is excellent
I have one minor problem: the engine on the rental bike was rough, not very expressive and slow to rev up, but at 3000 m altitude it worked better..

French Whipoid Model 2017
A bike that took me 1400 km between 2°C and 8°C on freeways in two days, with incursions into city centers (Rennes and Paris), 5.95 l/100 on the whole without any banter. Top-notch protection (I fitted a California Scientific size L bubble, my only modification). Makes you want to drive and drive some more. Almost 6000 km in the three months I've had it. And does everything, and everything well. Thank you, Yamaha. Rating : 5/5
L'anti GS
French Alphano Model 2017
Excellent machine to be classified in the sporty tourers. it is able to run with the best on the attack. On the 2017 model the big progress is located at the level of the engine euro 4 with an evolution in power in flexibility, in pleasantness and especially 330 to 350 kms of autonomy. The parameter setting of the suspensions piloted with the top and the speed regulator also. The traction control is a plus with the super effective go-around in TC2.Yamaha made it...A sure value

Surprised, dazzled, amazed, ecstatic, I got it a week ago, drove it just 150 km and fell in love. Top-notch comfort and handling, zero vibration, if I wasn't looking at the speedometer I'd never have said I was going 180km/h, it makes you want to go far, far away, to explore and travel. I have a feeling we'll be together for a very long time.

This Yamaha XTZ 1200 Super Ténéré Worldcrosser replaces a 2010 BMW R1200GS, with no regrets and a great deal of pleasure. The first thing that stands out is the far superior comfort provided by the wide suspension travels and the excellent quality of the shock absorbers. It has an engine with plenty of torque and engine braking, exceptional handling on the attack and efficient braking. Its strong point: the only motorcycle in the world to protect its rider's health, as it emits no electromagnetic radiation from the saddle and little vibration, with all electronics located at the right front. A real gem! I did find one flaw: the average fuel consumption of 8 l/100 km, a little too high. Super machine Rating : 5/5

Superb bike, easy to ride, powerful, comfortable and efficient, very engaging, it replaces my R 1200 GS advantageously because it's the only bike in the world that doesn't have electromagnetic radiation in the saddle, it respects its rider's health and is still sporty. A real jewel. Rating : 5/5
