presentation of the 750 SB7 1995
the SB7 designation means that this Bimotais the 7th motorcycle born with a Suzukiengine. But this machine could simply be identified as a SuperBike. Indeed, with the SB7, the small Italian manufacturer has given itself the means to do much more than just make up the numbers in this championship, where the 916 and RC 45 shine.
first and foremost, Bimota is a brand of enthusiasts, combining innovation, technology and performance. This passion is reflected in the curves of the SB7. The design carefully blends sportiness, elegance and indescribable charm. After the initial admiration, it's the surprise and questioning that catch the eye when it discovers the machine's aluminum frame. Called the "Straight Line Connection", its perimeter structure forms the straightest possible line between the swingarm and the steering column. A highly interesting concept, first introduced on the SB6, designed to combine rigor and agility. To perfect the Bimota's handling, the rider has access to an abundance of settings. The 46 mm fork, with carbon-coated forks, is adjustable for compression and rebound (preload is optional). It is also possible to modify the column angle and the position of the halfguidons. The Öhlins monoshock anchored longitudinally in the frame can also be adjusted in all directions. As you ride around the bike, if you've been too focused on the double exhaust tailpipe in the NR 750-style saddle, you may not have noticed the sumptuous seat-tank assembly. A superb one-piece unit, directly attached to the frame, and particularly rigid. It's made of carbon and fiberglass.
a little further down, you'll find magnesium. Where? In the engine block casings. This is the inspiration for a highly polished engine, in this case the mill of the Suzuki GSX-R 750 SP. Once in Rimini, the 4-cylinder is cooked up in Bimota style. A new fuel injection system, meaner camshafts, a new airbox and a different exhaust were grafted on. The result is a 132hp engine. High horsepower that leaves no doubt as to the machine's purpose: Sport!
Once in the saddle, legs spread wide by the large fuel tank, you'll be amazed at the machine's extreme compactness. Even a 600 has to be bigger. In addition to the feeling of confidence it imparts, the SB7 seems to merge with its rider. It doesn't take long to convince him of his favorite game: it's a tracker. A machine that loves beautiful trajectories and high revs. To take full advantage of its dynamic qualities, it needs to be fine-tuned. Bimotas are very sensitive to tuning and require a great deal of attention. Nothing to do with a more accommodating Japanese model; the Bimota is a true Italian. Once properly set up, the bike faithfully obeys the rider's commands, proving a pleasure to ride. Braking calls for no criticism, and the SB7 neither moves nor flinches when the Brembo brakes are applied.
To really get the most out of it, don't hesitate to raise the rev counter needle. Forget the low- and mid-range preliminaries. The SB7 is only responsive above 7,000 rpm. Does this mean you have to play with the gearbox? So much the better; you're not here to cruise like a Fat Boy. The boiler is happy to rev up, and only delivers its full power when you reach the red zone. A zone that extends from 13 to 16,000 rpm... The higher you go, the more you're hooked. A real treat!
bimota has a long history of building temperamental and/or exceptional machines. The SB7 is a perfect example. Hardly suited to everyday use, but terribly endearing, its main drawbacks are limited production and a price as high as its engine speed. Although... with a price tag somewhere between that of the 916 SPS and the Honda RC 45, the hesitations are no longer the same.
