presentation of the R20 Concept 2024
BMW is preparing a bolder model in the R18 range, with a roadster profile and a huge heart. It starts with a realization unveiled in the picturesque setting of Villa d'Este on Lake Como: the BMW R20 concept.
This machine bears no relation to the 1937 R20, a single-cylinder entry-level model. The BMW R20 concept of 2024 is an impressive motorcycle, with a powerful stance and a relaxed, gentlemanly style, while at the same time bringing together the brand's characteristic attributes: classic design and advanced engineering, combined with thrilling mechanics.
Centered around the Big Boxer engine, the expressive tank presents itself like a sculpture, while the rear end is reduced to the essentials to highlight the bike's clean lines and power.
The chassis has been completely redeveloped and, with a double-loop main frame in chrome-moly steel tubing, forms the backbone of this concept. With the 17x6.25-inch "disc rim" at the rear, on which a 200/55 tire is mounted, and a 17-inch black-spoke rim with a 120/70 tire at the front, the R20 concept combines tradition and modernity.
The tried-and-tested Paralever has been transposed into a new two-arm variant, in which the swingarm is made of chrome-molybdenum steel and the Paralever strut is aluminum. The kinematics are designed to ensure perfectly balanced drive torque. Special attention has also been paid to the two milled aluminum rear axle supports. The exposed driveshaft, conceptually taken from the R18, has been shortened for integration into the roadster's architecture.
Fully adjustable Öhlins Blackline suspension components are used front and rear. The bike's basic geometry features a 62.5° rake and a 1,550 mm wheelbase. Radial-mount ISR brake calipers front and rear take care of braking, with six pistons at the front and four pistons per caliper at the rear.
The centerpiece of the BMW R20 concept remains the air- and oil-cooled Big Boxer engine, with a revised displacement of 2,000 cm3. New cylinder head covers, a new universal joint cover and a radiator have been developed for this concept, to partially conceal the oil lines.

In addition, the dual exhaust system delivers the right sound and perfectly complements the design.
The aluminum fuel tank has been redesigned in the evolving "hotter than pink" color of the 1970s. The R20 concept is color-coordinated with polished and anodized aluminum cylinder head covers, fuel filler cap and air intake cones, as well as with the Paralever strut, footrest system and ISR brake calipers in "gunmetal".
The taillight has been perfectly integrated into the single-seater seat, covered in quilted black Alcantara and fine-grain leather, which emphasizes the roadster's dynamic appearance thanks to its compact rear end. The LED headlamp takes the form of a 3D-printed aluminum ring with an integrated daytime running light. The main headlamp seems to float visually in the middle of this daytime running light ring.
Each of these details contributes to the uniqueness of the concept bike and underlines its overall character: the BMW R20 concept takes Big Boxer culture to a new level.
Will we soon see it in series production? Certainly: the BMW concepts presented at Villa d'Este are almost all "trailers" for new models on the horizon.
