In this case, BMW has done itself proud. By reviving an icon of its past, the new R 12 S is also a particularly successful styling exercise, rich in ornamental elements. Fans of the belle époque will stare wide-eyed at this revival of the famous R 90 S. A motorcycle that gave the brand a healthy dose of sportiness at a time when BMWs were known more for their seriousness than for their adrenalin.

Flattering the eye and reviving the suit

The R 12 S instantly catches the eye with its "Lava Orange" paintwork, directly derived from the "Orange Daytona" of the 1975 R 90 S. The work is distinguished by a transparent lacquer on the fuel tank, revealing the brushed aluminum surfaces. This flamboyance was already hinted at in 2013's Ninety concept. Its overall design, but not its decoration, led to the NineT Racer, which met with only modest success. This time, BM is refining and refining the idea, with a roadster that's "sporty-customized" rather than "café-racerized". The effect is both explosive and distinguished.

From the R 12 NineT from which it derives, the R 12 S splits the sport with an old-fashioned mini headstock and matching seat cover. The seat features stitching in the same tone as the dress. And a number of design elements enhance the experience. Not for the sake of performance, but to flatter the ego. The R 12 S wants to be a star, and gives itself the means to do so.

With rhinestones, sequins and Dell'Orto carburetors? No, with 719 parts, such as Classic II spoked wheels and Shadow Billet I and II packs: cylinder head covers, oil level gauge, ignition coil covers, foot controls, levers, jar covers, passenger footrests and handlebar-tip mirrors are all made of milled aluminum.

What's more, the R 12 S comes with the Comfort Pack. This includes heated grips, cruise control, Up&Down shifter, hill-start assist and adaptive cornering lights.

But that's not to take us away from one of the motorcycle's central components, its engine. While the big, ultra-modern 1300 invades the entire range, the NineT unfailingly places its trust in the air-cooled 1200 boxer. Despite the years and drastic standards, it's still there, with 109 horsepower in the rods, 11.7 mkg of torque, and that inimitable round, gummy power.

The R 12 S can also count on some pretty hefty Brembo brakes, a handsome 45 mm inverted fork adjustable from anywhere, the inevitable Paralever gimbal monobar, 3 riding modes, cornering ABS, traction and engine braking controls, keyless start... and a host of options and accessories. Does it need them? Except to add to an already hefty price tag?

In its day, the BMW R 90 S was not only the sportiest model in the range, but also one of the fastest motorcycles in production, with a top speed of almost 200 km/h. Today, its equivalent would be the BMW R 90 S Spirit. Today, its equivalent would be the S 1000 RR.
