nobody was expecting it. It wasn't due so soon, but it's coming: the new BMW R 1200 ST. Announced as the replacement for the R 1150 RS, it will be the road lieutenant of the flagship R 1200 RT, presented at the same time. Both sporty and roadworthy, the ST weighs in at a feathery 230 kg with full tanks. The overall look is slimmer and more dynamic, with the exception of the huge headlamp unit. Frankly, it's a real eye-catcher, but the efficiency of the lighting must be impressive. It, too, will be powered by the new 1170 cm3 twin, developing 110 hp in this configuration. Protection won't be as important as on the R 1200 RT, as BM wanted it to be sportier in its definition. With Telelever suspension at the front and a new Paralever at the rear, increased torque and power, and light weight, the ST could win over the public that the 1150 RS failed to find. Its chic, sporty look and price (more affordable than the RT) will make it an ideal teammate for the new R 1200 RT.
It's not for nothing that this new BM is called ST - short for Sport Tourisme. There's no denying that this machine exudes a feeling that inevitably tends towards fast, playful pleasure riding. The touring trend is more subtle. It's those attributes of the BM philosophy that underline it, such as the bubble, handlebars and manually adjustable seat. Ergonomic research combined with the technical and stylistic audacity of the Bavarian manufacturer make this R 1200 ST one of the most interesting models in the range.

as always with Münich, the list of options allows you to build a motorcycle "à la carte", provided you're prepared to pad the cheque. For those interested, take a look at the R 1200 RT - the options are virtually the same.

it only takes a few minutes to adapt the ST's ergonomics to your body type. As the road ahead is long, you might as well get the GT configuration right away. A few trips back and forth to the BTR to free the halfguidons and adjust them, a flick of the hand to pull the bubble up to the highest setting... We're ready to go. Hhhmmm, the seat is a bit high. BMW R 1200 STIt's going to be fixed right away: just move a small piece of metal under the seat and the callipyge drops 20 mm.

The horizon isn't so far off when the 1200 ST enters it. The only worry is the radar scarecrow, which attracts the same sympathy as this BM's headlight. In-between the 2 milestones of blowing up the license, it's tempting to take advantage of the twin's health. Its vitality is exhilarating once you exceed 4,000 rpm. Speeding along at well over 200 km/h, the R 1200 ST boasts excellent roadholding and serious brakes. Extremely stable, and thanks to the Telelever system, it doesn't dive under braking, and even when well-equipped and loaded, the Münich machine is a great performer on the road.
A bit like the VFR, the Behemoth lends itself to a good winding on winding roads. Fun to drive, the ST manages to make you forget its "offbeat" face.

maybe it's an identity problem, but the recent soprt-GT models seem to have trouble finding their place. The VFR V-tec and Futura pay the price for their daring, angular design, while the Sprint ST 1050 displays a clear sporty tendency... it's not easy to have your ass between two chairs. And it's by no means certain that the R 1200 ST's frank and strange aesthetic originality will bring it success. Nevertheless, it's a very good machine, with a seductive handling. Do you remember that girl at school, not very pretty? She was a good friend, but nobody wanted to go out with her. Wrongly so...?

I'm 69 years old, my 2005 r1200st, I love it!... I've gone down to 3.35 l/100 in the summer at cruising speed, 67,000km today, April 2024. Rating : 5/5

On 28 04 2011 I posted this on another site. Today I still have my R1200ST, it's a teenager of 14A 6months, 94000kms. She still turns heads, and there's always someone who thinks she's much younger... She's given me a few tantrums (ESA and ABS), but I keep her anyway, because she's full of quality!

""""The existence of the R1200ST is the story of the ugly duckling, which is in fact a swan... The price is too close to the RT and the look is too offbeat, so it hasn't been able to show off its extraordinary qualities, because so many motorcyclists haven't tried it... Besides, between owners, we're a "clan" within the brand, and aliens on the street. It's so rare that it's ageless, and only those in the know are quick to find its brand... Personally, I'm HAPPY with the pleasure it gives me, and delighted not to see it too often! Technically, it's an absolute success. Its running costs are very reasonable (record 4.8l/100 on a full tank! at regulation speed). Perhaps one day it will become a collector's item, because curiously enough, its much-criticized look seems to be more popular today, and is now being copied by other brands! Un comble! """""""""""

super bike, exemplary comfort and roadholding, a little bomb from 4,000 revs upwards, a push to crime, to lose one's license, has nothing to envy to a japanese. professional biker having ridden almost only BMs, under the spell of this one, a delight to ride. to hell with aesthetics, long live the pleasure of riding this machine. biker friends i salute you, have a good ride and above all be careful. i'm 71 years old and still as happy as ever to get on my bike. Like a Porsche 996 long shunned because of its headlights, the overlapping headlights seem to spoil the exceptional qualities of this well-balanced, powerful motorcycle, enough to travel comfortably over long distances.
Forget the unattractive bow and enjoy what these headlights have to offer at night. It's true that today, with less headlight surface area, you get better illumination. But this is more than ten years ago, and what this bike offers for today's price is exceptional.

I own a 2007 bought in perfect condition at 18000 and with today 40000kms...
You don't buy this bike because you like it, but for the impressive synthesis of its qualities: what can you reproach it for, apart from its looks ... nothing! the chassis is oversized and beyond reproach (mine has the ESA ammortos WHITE POWER), the engine has two faces, before and after 4500t ..and a kick of gnac past 6000T to over 8000t.....the brakes (ABS integral sport - partially integral, in fact) are hyper-efficient.
Its first quality is its impressive versatility and consistency under load: riding loaded - that's to say, with a duo and 40kgs of luggage! - is no problem at all, and has virtually no effect on handling!
Mine is equipped with flat handlebars that make it super-handy but less sporty... a high bubble, heated grips for winter and sometimes July!!.. a top case support, a homemade tank bag.......... and an aluminum breech cover... and it's all black. For the headlight, a Wunderlich cover improves the look while preserving the bluffing efficiency of the lighting..... In short, apart from reliability concerns with the ESA and ABS, ras.....surveiller le niveau d\'huile, un flat air c\'est pas un 4 à eau !
In conclusion, this bike has completely missed out on a well-deserved success in France. There were two reasons for this: its price, which was too close to that of the RT, and its look, which was too far ahead of its time - no kidding, when you see all the copiers who have taken over its twin headlights! So a lot of bikers didn't try it out and missed out.....
I'm happy with it, especially as it's so rare, it hasn't aged and only a few aficionados recognize it.....
At BMW we're a "clan" and on the road, I drive an O.R.N.I. !!!!
This ugly duckling is a real swan!

A perfect example of an excellent, totally versatile machine, if you take into account its large displacement (which allows you to cover a certain number of kms per outing!). Aesthetically, it's a little sexier than its predecessor pictured here. Personally, I find its fork head original and, above all, effective, with its transparency around the headlight, because most of the time we deplore this lack of vision of the front end on streamlined machines. Here, it's clear that everything has been thought out with a view to maximum efficiency in terms of versatility and ergonomics, hence this slightly chaotic look. It's exactly the kind of bike I like, except that I don't need such a displacement on a daily basis. I had the little sister F800s with the same philosophy, a sport-tourer as hyper-versatile (there's still the f800 "st\" in the catalog). The r1200st is rare, and not many have been sold, even though it ranked 1st in M-S's maxitest for a long time. It has to be said that some people have had to deal with the new 1200 engine. It's a pity that we don't make medium-displacement flatbeds with good power anymore, as it might have interested me, and certainly others. If you come across a second-hand model, even if it's only got a few kilometers on it, which will probably be the case, given how much fun it is, try out this r12st, which should delight your heart if not your eyes. The R1200ST: a very, very good bike
Problem: if BMW stopped after two years, it's because it's unsellable in France, even BMW is reluctant to take it back........customers don't want it because the market doesn't exist in France (whereas in Germany!) for this bike at BMW.....and moreover its look is too offbeat, for the BMW tradition... Too bad, it's full of quality, and used, not expensive.

i've owned a 1200 ST since June 2005 and have only done 13,000 km, but what a joy!

Unfortunately, however, it's no longer on sale! Why not? Is BM now doing what the Japanese do? What's going to happen in terms of maintenance and, above all, repairs in the years to come for the 1200 STs still on the road? And what about the resale value?

A promise made, a promise kept,
news of my 1200 ST: 8 months, 25,000 km and nothing to report but happiness. Apart from a little slip for which I was very happy that the other insurance company paid: 4,000 euros for a slip at 50 km/h with no effect on the engine (except for a rocker cover) and chassis, I can only imagine the bill for a more serious accident. Just for fun, the front light unit, which some people look at strangely, costs over 450 euros! No doubt that's the price of success..
For the rest, it's an excellent machine, with very sound handling, and an engine that pumps out watts while being smoother than its predecessors. The new drive shaft is remarkable, and the fuel consumption is very reasonable (400 km range in "moto dodo" work use, and 340-350 km in "joe bar team" use)

I'll come back to the fuel consumption chapter: the on-board computer gave me a wrong estimate of fuel consumption. In fact, when I left the service station after putting in 10 liters, the level was lower than before the test! But this morning it was higher! So I consumed about 7.5 to 8 liters for 150kms at a steady pace, which is very good! Rating : 5/5
French Model 2007
I've just done 150 km on this machine, and here are my impressions
handling is very good, but be careful at high speeds, the rear shock absorbs bumps badly, and disturbs the overall balance without being dangerous (no steering)
Braking is excellent and the bike doesn't dive! My K1200R dives +?!
The gearbox is very smooth, as is the clutch
The engine is torquey, lively, and doesn't vibrate more than it should up to 180, after which the vibrations are very noticeable, especially on the speedo, which vibrates so much that it's hard to read anything! But here we're already over 200kmh, and it stalls at 240, which is too much for this engine, but acceptable for the healthy chassis!
On the other hand, with an average of 180, punctuated by slowing down and then wringing out the throttle, I find the fuel consumption high (9 to 10 liters). In the end, I'm going to keep my K12R because it's easier to ride quietly, and gives me a better feeling when I step on the gas! Not to mention the look!

Vacations over, over 4,000 kms (solo + luggage) with the 1200st, including 2 stages of +/- 850 kms on super-frequented Bison trails
1.75m/84kgs, half-guidelines and bubble in medium position, saddle in low position, I found "my" good position. Suspension well adjusted, I "forgot" the absence of silent-blocs and the big handles of the 1100rs to complete the 2 stages of 850km in 9:30 (*) (including 3 full tanks and 30min lunch stops) without feeling excessively tired, my wrists fit to serve the wine without trembling at the evening meal, ready to set off again
Average fuel consumption stabilized at 5.2 l/100
Plus points: ease of driving (even at 30 km/h), stability, roadholding, braking, protection and general comfort
Minuses: slow start-up check-up (when you stop often for photos, it gets on your nerves), lack of small storage spaces, evolution at very low speed (5/10 kms/h) and...braking in this same condition, you have to avoid the reflex right hand
Another remark concerns the wear of the rear tire (won't do more than 9000kms), no doubt also a right-hand problem!
Conclusion: I'm very satisfied with the r1200st for its intended purpose, which is touring... quite "sporty"

(*) I slow down in every town I go through!

100.000 kms with the r1100rs and 3,500 kms with the new 1200st
No regrets about jumping on the bandwagon
In order of (more than) favorable sensations: gearbox, brakes, engine
The rest is what we've come to expect, only better
The (small) minuses: disappearance of the "flexibility" of the handlebars (no more silent-blocks) and of the little storage box behind the seat (puncture-proof spray and a liter of oil can come in handy); slight drop in the effectiveness of the "bubble"
Performance, there's always better, but what's the point! I cut off at 220 (with full luggage), and it was still pushing with unflappable handling despite the state of the road (!), and at this speed, I was able to carry out an emergency braking test without the slightest scare (and without any relation to the IBSR data)
As for fuel consumption, +/- 5.2 l/100 (5.7 max) and a range of 380/400 kms, depending on how stubbornly you fill the tank!
Still to be tested on 800 to 900 kms/day
NB: I'm not a professional tester and refer only to my ex/1100rs.

Only fools don't change their minds... I tried out the R1200ST this morning, for over an hour (BM's nice place) and brought it back not even broken. Yet it's so tempting to shoot the bowls, you feel so comfortable so quickly: 5 minutes is almost 4 too many. Well, when it comes to taking it to task, good luck! a rail in the big curves, easy to angle in the tight corners, stable at 180 km/h (I can't believe I was on a racetrack) with the feeling that there's a good bit left in the wrist. In short, a more than favorable impression, and the engine is a major contributor. It doesn't vibrate that much (the new balance shaft seems very efficient), but after 4,000 revs, it really does plane. The test model was fitted with ABS, so you either like it or you don't (I'd be more in the second group), but it works like a charm. If I'm going to be objective, it doesn't feel like my Triumph Sprint RS, but it's a real pain under braking, and the noise is sanitized. Another thing that annoys me is that I'm either too tall or too short (1m75), but at cruising speed (100/130) with the bubble in the up position, you take everything on top of the helmet. I'll spare you the debate on optics, but frankly, the more I look at the bike, the less it bothers me. So for what I'm looking for, a bike that does 40,000 km a year without losing 50% of its value (not my Triumph!), with a cardan shaft and super versatile, it does the job really well, even very well. Well, I have to say that I agree with the opinion already expressed: I went to see it today for the first time and the reserved opinion I had in front of the photos vanished in a few minutes! It's one hell of a machine to look at, exuding a subtle blend of bestiality and class, and finally the double optic finds its place in this ensemble: the front is truly impressive! With the suitcases, it remains perfectly homogeneous from every angle and loses none of its fighter-plane allure! As for the build quality and finish, it's simply magnificent! I confess I'm confused, and my R1150RS may well have found its replacement in a few months...yet I love my RS! Rating : 5/5
Like many people, I was disappointed by the first photos, but when I saw it for real, I found it much prettier, with its slim seat contrasting with the large fuel tank. I would have preferred it with a lower fairing to hide the front sump and soften the prominence of the exhausts. But its overall lines are much more modern than my R 1150 RS. After testing it, I was delighted by its lightness and liveliness; I've decided to order one right away! Rating : 5/5

I've only seen pictures of it, but I really like it, despite its weird headlights and then, when you're on it, you can't see it! :-). The 1150RS is a good, little-known bike, and the 1200ST surpasses it in many respects, but BMW France isn't counting on making big sales with it, whereas some dealers are betting on its (relative) success as an alternative (price-wise, among other things...) to the 1200RT Rating : 5/5

For me, it's the same thing: the first photos disappointed me. But after seeing it in real life at the show, the more I look at the photos, the more I tell myself that there'll soon be one in my garage to replace my good K1200RS. Rating : 5/5

Surprised by the look of this bike, I wanted to see it for myself. At first, my opinion was negative...in a word: Yuck!
But when I saw it for real at the Brussels Motor Show, I fell in love with it. Everything about her appeals to me. Don't be fooled by the photos, because the reality is disturbing. In any case, I want her!
All I can say is that it was a real crowd-puller at the BM stand (along with the RT & GS). Comments were flying and I saw many sparks of envy shining in visitors' eyes. I'm sure it won't leave anyone indifferent, but you'll see that BM has just scored a major coup! Others will follow suit later... that's for sure...
