The electric motorcycle market is not yet spectacular in terms of market share. Although technical progress is obvious, the psychological barriers and constraints inherent in this technology limit sales. However, when it comes to design and alternative solutions, there are some real gems to be found in the thriving jungle of small manufacturers and diverse projects. Among them, the E-Raw. A true demonstration of creativity from a small company based in Lyon, Essence Motocycles.

here's a roadster that will shake you up, and not just by turning the handlebars. It's a far cry from the ready-to-wear motorcycle. Here, we're approaching haute-couture, with meticulous styling, beautiful parts and a back worthy of a star on the Hollywood catwalk. Because on the E-Raw, you'll be stunned to discover the saddle. Here, the tank has disappeared and only a magnificent piece of wood covers the upper part of the machine. Streamlined and designed like a sculpture, it takes 80 sheets of wood to build it, and the result is an authentic visual shock. The effect is guaranteed, and the sensation of exception is omnipresent. Comfort? To be discovered. But we'd almost relegate this notion to... What for?

the E-Raw warns of its offbeat side. But it's still a motorcycle, with top-of-the-range technology and the ability to deliver quality performance. Its tubular trellis frame is fitted with a beautiful Öhlins inverted fork, a shock absorber from the same manufacturer, and an imposing aluminum swingarm cut from the same mass. For the brakes, the Lyon-based brand has stayed local, opting for Rhone-based equipment manufacturer Beringer, which has developed a system specifically for this machine, enhanced by its superb parts. The dashboard? An iPhone. The wheels are in the café-racer spirit. Beautiful Excel spoked wheels fitted with sport tires.

And the engine? This E-Raw needs to propel its 167 kilos. The Brushless synchronous motor is powered by a serious 10.1 kWh battery. Doesn't that tell you a lot? Not to me either. But there are other figures that will help us see things more clearly. A range of 185 km, a top speed of 155 km/h. But above all, a power output of 80 kW, the equivalent of 109 horsepower, and a colossal torque rating of over 18 mkg. Enough to lift a caravan. As for the 0 to 100, it does it in 3.5 seconds. A surprising bonus is the charging time. It takes just 30 minutes to fill up with electrons.

this Essence-Motocycles E-Raw is expected to be produced in only 10 units, at a very hefty price. With the kind of attention reserved for exceptional pieces: each model will be made to order and to measure. Not yet the means to make electric motorcycles democratic, but enough to restore the reputation of French motorcycling.
