the highly-travelled and imposing Road King can now count on this Custom version. Lighter styling for a machine that would happily cruise the beaches of Malibu. Feet forward and arms outstretched by the wide handlebars, you stroll with your hair blowing in the wind, lulled by the "good vibrations" and protected by the small chrome windscreen. Mounted on silent-blocks, the twin cam 88 offers the ideal amount of trepidation without turning the bike into a vibrator. The rest of the ride is absorbed by the comfort provided by a good seat and suspension of the same ilk. By losing its large windscreen, the King reduces its long-distance ambitions. We can console ourselves by caressing the magnificent leather-covered saddlebags. The ultra-low saddle (690 mm) accommodates the cruiser rider, who will have invested in a good pair of sunglasses - the chromework shines so brightly that it's hard to miss.

The machine isn't a model of slenderness, but it's surprisingly easy to handle. Caution must be exercised when manoeuvring. The 350 kg weigh as much as a dead donkey. The nice, wide handlebars become a nuisance when you need to make a U-turn - plan for a traffic circle or a supermarket parking lot. Although comfortable, the machine remains typical of custom and Harley bikes: the passenger could be better off, and the rider's legs aren't far enough back (especially noticeable over small bumps). As for the nice suitcases, don't expect to find a helmet in them. Good marks for the rear brake, but the front requires more conviction from the right hand.

2004 model; after several 4-legged bikes (fzs600,1000;gtr1000;rf900r;xjr 1300 which I have and which I'll take back when this one gives up :160000 km) at 51 years old I fell for a 2004 rkc. it's a discovery, it's a heavy bike, but impressively easy to ride, and it's very fuel-efficient in touring mode. i've done the corrèze and cantal: great for cornering. i bought one in the spring of 2004 to replace my roadking 98
The 1450 is much smoother than the 1340, but a little less comfortable (shorter suspension)
The handlebars are a heresy to replace those of the normal RK, as is the saddle
