Harley-Davidson returns to transformist territory with the Sport Glide. A motorcycle designed to combine the joys and precepts of several worlds, to the sound of a big, torquey engine. The "convertible machine" concept is not new to Harley. From time to time, a model has appeared that can be transformed at will. Is this what customizing is all about? Well, not quite. Let's get one thing straight:
the difference between adding accessories and configuring a convertible model
A grinding wheel can be accessorized. Within the limits of homologation and the imagination of accessory designers, certain elements can be added or removed. And sometimes, the result, in terms of aesthetics, leaves something to be desired. Doubtful? Take a look at a Street-Bob with a windscreen: effective but not very harmonious...
the convertible concept takes this to the extreme by proposing an opposite alternative: we don't start with the accessory that can be fitted to the wheel, but rather build a wheel that can perfectly integrate this or that accessory. The aim? There are three: to be able to transform your motorcycle at will, to keep a fluid and acceptable line when these accessories are fitted or not, and to have access to great versatility.
In short, to make something useful and not ugly when you add unsightly appendages, while retaining the advantages of each proposed configuration. A real puzzle, isn't it?
Ah, Harley's Touring models... The carrying capacity of an ocean liner, and the ability to swallow kilometers at elephant height. Just curl up in your lounge chair, put on a little music in the background and let yourself glide along the big ribbon. The superlatives are there. But...
Yes, but here's the thing: when it comes to fetching bread on a Sunday or tackling a mountain pass, it's a real pain in the ass. The monster shows its limits. So what about a Softail? Why not, but then it's the distance covered that brings you back to reality. The wind in your squash, the firm saddle, the total lack of protection and the impression after two hundred kilometers of highway that an A380 has taken off in your helmet. And let's not forget the fact that you couldn't take your rain jacket because there wasn't enough room, and you had to ride through a thunderstorm worthy of the name! Personally, I like it, but you've got to admit that once you're back home, with your ears ringing, your neck cramping and your buttocks in knots, it takes a little getting used to before you're able to chat with your mates again. Some will say that, after all, it's an extension of tranquillity. But back to the Sport Glide.

So we take the playfulness of the last frame, the hard-edged character of the new Milwaukee Eight engine, and build something that looks like a touring bike. The only difference is that the new frame comes with a set of accessories (bat-wing and saddlebag) that can be disassembled at will. Theoretically, this means that the new Softail's handling and touring capabilities are close to those of a Touring.
On the technical side, we have a 107-cubic-inch M8 (with a torque of 145 NM) mounted in the new deceptively rigid frame. The whole unit weighs 304 kg and has a pretty black engine and exhaust muffler. The bat-wing (the fairing above the headlight) is removable, as are the lockable saddlebags. On a more technological note, there are LED headlights, keyless ignition and a USB port.
So, yes, the bat-wing is less prominent than that of a Street Glide, and the saddlebags are smaller, but then again, this isn't a big tourer. Don't forget that it's almost impossible to have two real bikes in one, and still have an easy conversion. On the other hand, you can take two models and try to retain as many of the qualities of each as possible. A difficult gamble to win, but who knows?

Sissy bar high for the duffel and revised saddle. The great thing about Harleys is that you can load them up like mules, so when I'm in town, I ride solo and take off the batwing

I drive a Dyna (a REAL Dyna), an FXDL S on which I removed the little windshield that looked too much like a 2-bit TV series.
Well, it rains and blows every time. And I'm not complaining. Note that there's a better way: take the train.
I don't ride my bike for comfort, but for pleasure and style.
And I'm somewhere between his father's and his grandfather's age ;)

it's a very pleasant machine to ride, I find it light despite its 320 kg; before, I had a suzuki bandit 1200; I switched to harley for the comfort

i just received my sport glide, I ordered a screamin pot because I had heard the original sound, what a disappointment in terms of sound! 980â'¬ for a noise of electric motorcycle!

I've fitted a cobra, I love its metallic, muffled sound at idle, like a stainless steel pot, it's my 1st 2-in-1 on a Harley, it's really great, plus it's reasonably priced

i'm hesitating between the cobra around 400 â'¬ the silencer or the screeming which has just come out which is harley approved but doesn't make any noise if you don't remove the baffle so it's no longer approved for the final budjet 1000 â'¬ the silencer. i'm more tempted by the cobra but no idea of the noise

I also have a sport glide and I love this machine. It's a real pleasure to ride.

Serious fuel consumption when you open the throttle a little too long, long throttle pull (electronic control!) good traffic flow, even with panniers, but beyond 160 km/h, you have to buy arms!

I like this harley a little disappointed by the aesthetics of the pot of echap but I hesitate between the low rider but no saddlebags that close with keys and this one but as I measure 1.65m I am a little afraid because of the advanced controls

I wanted neither a super tanker nor a ballerina.
This machine meets all my specifications.
In fact, I ride it...
Some people above criticize the mini Batwing: take it off and you'll see the difference without it.
I like the bagger spirit, so please respect other people's tastes, because there's something for everyone in the range.
I'm in no way criticizing tourers whose mufflers are so long, eh?
And you can replace it if you don't like it.
This machine is very appealing because of its versatility, and that's what I was looking for...
Harley has perfectly understood the expectations of a new clientele, even if it means losing some of them.
I'm not a trendy bobo or anything like that.
I've always loved bycylinders, and this machine allows me to ride every day and still get away from it all.
And when I'm on the move on the long trips home, bye bye the big mamouths...
I know all about it, I used to have a Street Glide...

Aesthetically, it's ugly, badly balanced with its small, ill-proportioned batwing, it's called sport but has nothing sporty about it, its 2-in-1 exhaust system is huge and very ugly when not hidden by the panniers. It's not as harmonious as HD's Deluxe, CVO and other models... Wanting to be versatile is all well and good, but to the detriment of the overall look it's just silly. The front end is a mess, even though the 2018 range looks pretty good in this respect, as is the new led signature, but the sportglide only inherits the basic led headlight, take away the batwing and you've got an inverted fork of mediocre quality, with dubious aesthetics and function. It's a far cry from the sporty criteria, and looks like a low-end bike designed to attract young licence-holders, but at this price we're entitled to expect much better than a motorcycle made up of kit elements from its big and little sisters. Harley was the king of flatbeds long before the Japanese or the Europeans. After a useless switchback, Harley has come out with an equally useless sport glide. I'm all for sport, but with 2 front brake rollers at the very least.
It's not really ugly, except for the ersatz fork head (frankly pathetic, it looks like a botched customization).

the engine works well (tested in stage 1 on a roadking) and the chassis, if the press tests are anything to go by, is a success.
For sport, it would have been much better to put the speedo on the handlebars, as on the street, or even better, in front of the handlebars, rather than on the tank, which forces you to take your eyes off the road?
For me, it's another motorcycle for bobos.
