presentation of the 1811 SPRINGFIELD 2019
since its comeback, Indian hasn't been content with just offering top-of-the-range cruisers. It also wants to shake up and push back its long-standing rival, Harley-Davidson. And it works. Both are quick to come up with evolutions to mark their territory. In Milwaukee, the wind blew with the birth of the Muilwaukee Eight engine. Springfield retaliated with an increase in power for the Thunderstroke in 2018, and the appearance of driving modes in 2019. The power is there, the electronics make it malleable:
- Tour' mode offers progressive acceleration for optimum ride smoothness.
- Standard' mode features responsive throttle control and balanced, progressive power delivery.
- Finally, the 'Sport' mode offers instant throttle response and more aggressive power delivery for even more pronounced acceleration.
And that's not all. The engine management system includes a rear cylinder deactivation mode. At standstill, the twin can become mono to limit heat emissions. This function is gently interrupted when the machine is restarted. And what a machine it is...
indian completes its bagger range with a machine full of charisma. Every good manufacturer of American (or related) motorcycles has to present one, or even several, in its range. This is the role assigned to the Springfield. It leaves the classic side to the Chief Vintage with its leather cases. For her, it's a game of two halves, as the machine knows how to transform itself according to mood. Will you enjoy it Cruising or Touring?
it goes from one to the other. A dual identity that allows you to ride fully relaxed on Sunday outings, or to draw up a route plan for 4-figure mileage. In all its majesty, the Springfield is as ready for highways as it is for undressing. The windshield is large enough to provide plenty of protection. Fancy a breath of fresh air before setting off, or some more custom styling? It can be removed in less than a minute without tools. The same applies to hard cases, which can be removed without a screwdriver or 12" wrench, and without revealing any unsightly lashing system. It's clean, practical and high quality. And technological, too. The cargo compartments can be locked remotely, by remote control or from the dashboard.
would a stripped-down 1811 Springfield be nothing more than a convertible Indian Chief? Certainly not. The brand has gone one step further. This large coaster benefits from a reinforced rear buckle for additional luggage, as well as an optional trunk (up to 242 kilos in all). While the mixed steel/aluminium frame is the same as that of the other models in the range, the front axle should be more lively, as the caster and caster angle have been tightened. A relative notion, partly conditioned by the machine's rather copious weight. 388 kilos fully loaded, with half a dozen refrigerators under the handlebars, demands a certain equanimity when driving.
its name tells a story. Springfield is the birthplace of the brand. The long Massachusetts summers are present right down to the fins of the big twin. Like all the huge models in the range, this bagger carries the Thunderstroke 111. Deep, serene, muscular in the fat of American steel, this block is as sublime to look at as it is tasty to ride. It's a big, torquey engine full of character, as only the Americans make it, with hints and hiccups of a V8. It's rated at just over 80 hp. Does it matter once the bowls are in motion? Not at all. It's the effort of the 15.3 Mkg at just 2100 rpm that's the real attraction. Breath to thrill the arms, the senses, the back. For the latter's peace of mind, the Springfield, like the other Chief models, is equipped with an air shock absorber. The seat is only 660 mm off the ground.
the 20.8-liter fuel tank makes long-distance riding possible. In terms of equipment, the Indian comes standard with ABS, cruise control, front and rear crash-bars, tire pressure monitoring system, keyless unlocking, manual controls and an automatic transmission.in terms of equipment, the Indian comes standard with ABS, cruise control, front and rear crash-bars, tire pressure monitoring system, keyless entry, chrome-plated hand controls, studded leather double seat, a remarkable level of finish and a fairly select entry price. When it comes to accessories, there's no shortage of them, with 180 references for the Springfield.
By offering quick and easy disassembly of its Touring equipment, the Springfield directly jostles the ex-Harley Switchback and Sport Glide in a more premium, more luxurious register. Much more expensive too. It offers the modularity of Davidson's mid-size Tourer with the presence of a Road King. And prestige of a different caliber. Indian has re-created a very upmarket identity, bordering on the elitist. The Springfield thus asserts itself as a bagger of high lineage.
