presentation of the CRF 450 R 2027
The CRF 450 gets a massive overhaul for 2027, making it practically a brand-new machine. The increase in power is just as dramatic as the reduction in weight. But that’s just a glimpse of the changes to Honda’s big motocross bike.
Every update to the CRF 450 R is designed to deliver a more pronounced competitive edge, and the key figures immediately illustrate this: 10.3% more power and 3.7% more torque, combined with a significant weight reduction of 4.5 kg, bringing the total down to just 102.7 kg (without fuel). The result is a machine that accelerates harder, responds more quickly, and is noticeably lighter and more agile on the track.
This performance gain starts with a more efficient engine capable of revving higher. The redesigned, more compact powertrain features a larger bore, a new piston with a redesigned crown, and an all-new crankshaft, allowing for a shorter stroke and a higher compression ratio. Larger-diameter titanium intake valves are now paired with new titanium exhaust valves, while a reworked UNICAM valve system improves airflow efficiency, allowing the engine to breathe more freely and deliver higher, more usable power.
Traction out of corners is further improved thanks to a more compact transmission with revised gear ratios, increasing the force transmitted to the rear wheel across a wider speed range, allowing riders to apply power earlier and with greater confidence. The clutch introduces a Back Torque Limiter (BTL) activated by a rubber damper—a world first—providing a refined, limited-slip “slipper” function validated by HRC in MXGP, while a redesigned starter motor reduces weight and size.
Control is just as important as pure performance, and the electronics package takes this into account. HRC Launch Control and Honda Selectable Torque Control (HSTC) have been updated with settings directly derived from the factory machines, offering more precise and adaptable performance in changing conditions. The Engine Mode Select Button (EMSB) still allows the rider to instantly adjust the engine’s character, tailoring power delivery to their preferences and the track’s demands.
Handling has been further refined, stability increased, and predictability improved, even in the most challenging track conditions, thanks to a frame that is 70% new. New sections, optimized materials, and improved manufacturing processes have increased overall stiffness without adding weight compared to the 2026 model (26YM). This new frame works in harmony with a new lightweight aluminum swingarm, whose shape has been optimized not only for performance but also to facilitate access to the air filter during maintenance.
The revised Showa suspension reduces friction at both the front and rear, delivering a smoother and more consistent response throughout the travel, supported by an updated Pro-Link system, a new rear wheel with a new hub, and a larger Dunlop MX34 rear tire.

The rider interface has also been improved to optimize both performance and ergonomics. An increased fuel capacity of 0.8 L extends track time, while redesigned radiator vents and revised rear side covers improve rider mobility, promoting better efficiency in cornering and acceleration. A new seat shape also strengthens the connection between rider and machine.
Environmental considerations have also been addressed, with the integration of recycled materials into certain bodywork components, while the iconic HRC Tricolour livery establishes a visual link between the CRF 450 R and Honda’s commitments at the highest level in MotoGP and WorldSBK.
For those seeking even closer alignment with factory-level performance, the limited-edition CRF 450 R HRC-WE builds on the standard model’s foundation by adding features from the Works Edition. Hand-finished intake and exhaust ducts, a Yoshimura exhaust system with a titanium header, and a Twin Air filter boost peak performance, while exclusive suspension components and premium finishes transform the bike into a true race-ready machine straight out of the showroom.

I chose the brand and displacement of a 4-stroke because it was low-maintenance (slower engine with oil bath lubrication), but less powerful than a 2-stroke with the same displacement, hence the 450 displacement. To tell the truth, a 250 CR 2-stroke would have been more than enough, and it also met my needs in terms of power, but not in terms of maintenance, noise, etc...
The KTM, the other queen of the field, was also on my mind, but having bad memories of the Swedish brand, I didn't want to fall back into the horrors of the past, and even though I know that they've made a lot of progress since then, particularly in terms of reliability, and that today their bikes are up to scratch, I preferred the Honda. So a Honda 4-stroke powerful enough to have fun, what choice did I have?
The 350 CRF L and the 450 CRF.
So I chose the 450 CRF, and I don't regret it.
Pleasant and versatile, smooth and brutal at the same time, powerful but not too powerful, inexpensive to maintain, in short, it's a joy to ride, as those with a vocabulary would say... One criticism, however, but valid for all the bikes in the line-up, is the height of the seat...
Which wouldn't be a problem with a starter, but until 2016 they weren't equipped with one, and as I have a 2016 model... However I'm aware that to have a good riding position and good ground clearance, the bike has to be high, but this is problematic when you have to kick...
So despite my 1m80, I do it on the workshop stand or leaning against a wall, otherwise it's a bit difficult, the seat being perched at 95cm... In summary, you can go for it, I don't think this bike will disappoint you. Rating : 5/5 Respond to Christopher
