The Sport Chief didn't feel the trap coming. Indian had told her vaguely about a little stroll with friends, perhaps with some surprises, maybe a trip to a club...
But the idea was to make her want to indulge in other types of riding. What? Extend her active lifestyle with large pockets for evening wear.
By the time she emerged, she'd been transformed into a Sport Chief RT.

Transform is a big word. In fact, she found herself with a pair of small suitcases on her hips. What she hadn't realized from the story and the evening at the club was that, with her luggage, fork head and raised handlebars, her philosophy was finally tipping over into Club Style. A trend born in California long ago, driven by bikers looking for comfort and performance. In Europe and Japan, we'd call it Sport-GT, with 100 kilos less weight.

The Sport Chief ticked many of these boxes. With its RT specification, it allows bikers to carry 37 liters of gear - the equivalent of a spare outfit or a ham per suitcase. A new two-seater saddle adds to its cachet and comfort. This equipment is available as an option for other Chief models. To accentuate the cool-attitude, the footrests are positioned further forward.

Between bobber, bagger and sport

More weight, more pace, more road for this American bad-boy, unchanged in its overall technical package. It takes full advantage of its enormous 1890 cm3 Thuderstoke twin, slightly less powerful since 2025 removed a few Nm. It still delivers 15.9 mkg at 3,300 rpm, with the depth, fatness and drive of a Massachusetts mechanical orgy.

The Sport Chief / RT is surprisingly sporty, a far cry from the segment's canon. The chassis, with its Brembo radial brake calipers, fully adjustable upside-down forks and Fox piggyback shock absorbers, is a real eye-catcher.
Once you're on board, you don't dominate it; it invites you to dance. Handlebars mounted on 152 mm machined bridges encourage your arms to grab hold of the elements and every thrill.

For some time now, an Indian has been packed with electronics. Is there much of it in this Chief? Nothing less than 3 riding modes (Standard / Sport / Tour), cruise control, keyless start, ABS, a 4-inch circular color TFT display, Ride Command with connectivity and multimedia/GPS app, USB and 12V sockets, LED lighting and timely deactivation of the rear cylinder to prevent overheating. Traction control.... Anti-wheeling.... Don't know it and don't care. Still, the Indian has retained a few appreciable rough manners.

A tough rival

The Indian Sport Chief RT comes out of this ambush rather happy, as it can now go head-to-head with the Harley Low Rider ST. It's the same way of life for these two American bikes, but the Milwaukee-based model stands out with a bigger, beefier engine, bigger valances, a more wraparound fork head, and a price.... ah well no, almost the same. One smells like a runaway, the other wants to spend the night in Sin City.

Why keep these dual rear suspensions? Indian could work on optimizing this model by switching to a pseudo-hardtail rear (more practical and lightweight), a 2-in-1 exhaust (less bulky, lighter, and more attractive), engine optimization—particularly to make it much more fuel-efficient—and color options (we want versions with chrome), all at a competitive price. Very nice bike, good comfort despite an unusual position when you come from a trail bike!
