presentation of the KLE 650 2027
Right after launching its 900 Versys to take on the Tracer 9, Kawasaki is doubling down by going head-to-head with the 700 Ténéré. Really? It’s not that simple…
Its challenger is the KLE 650, a new adventure bike designed for the open road and, occasionally, for where the pavement ends. Kawa has no beef with Yam, but the market for these models is very active and a great way to build brand image.
Be careful not to confuse it with the KLR 650, a classic machine from the ’80s and ’90sand the golden age of big single-cylinder bikes (which is still sold across the Atlantic). The KLE we’re looking at here is powered by a twin-cylinder engine. Twice as many cylinders for far greater flexibility and power. A parallel twin, in fact—an architecture that’s extremely common in the adventure bike sector (except at Suzuki). There’s no secret or mystery here: the bike uses the same engine as the Z 650 S.
And from many other models as well. Except that the engine has undergone a few modifications. Injection bodies that are 2 mm larger (38 mm in diameter), a redesigned intake and exhaust system, and a modified compression ratio allow it to produce 70 chevaux—2 more than in the current Z, Ninja, Versys, and RS models.
We’ve been familiar with the “KLE” prefix since the 500—both today’s model and the one from 35 years ago. By adopting this name, the 650 has also taken on the identity of the current 500. The design is a direct copy, seemingly distinguished only by a few stickers. The front fork, its triple-eye look, the windshield, the deflectors, the upper fairing panels, the fuel tank, the seat, the exhaust, the overall look… one is the mirror image of the other.
But let’s focus on the details for a moment, and that’s where it reveals itself. The more intricately crafted lower panels, the under-seat fairing featuring a protrusion, the specific swingarm, the presence of a second brake disc, the one-piece perforated brake pedal —It’s not quite a clone, even though it wants you to believe it is. When you get up close to the front end, you can also tell that it’s not just the mechanics that have changed.

A treasure hunt?
While the KLE 650 borrows the engine from the 6½ Z roadster, its frame, on the other hand, has nothing in common with it—except for the steel. Its technical structure is far more complex and reinforced, with a design quite similar to that of the KLE 500. A veritable cage of tubes, designed not to handle power but to absorb impacts. At first glance, with its trellis frame, massive 43-mm inverted fork, and raised handlebars, the bike might seem built for rough terrain rather than city streets. The 21- and 17-inch spoked rims seem to suggest the same, while the tires, on the contrary, are practically made for the road and just a little bit of trail. The Trailmax Mixtour tires are only moderately suited for off-road riding.
Although its tall, slender profile clearly evokes rally-raid racing, the suspension offers long travel (210 mm up front and 196 mm in the rear), and it seems to exude the spirit of mountain adventure, Kawasaki markets its KLE 650 as a “travel trail bike.” But isn’t that the Versys 650’s role? A funny detail: the Versys’s factory code is KLE650J.
In any case, the Kawa throws everyone off when it first appears. Then its manufacturer lays all its cards on the table. By talking about comfort, protection, long distances, highways, cruise control, an adjustable windshield—and almost never about off-roading or obstacles—the brand clearly signals the type of road it has in mind for this KLE.
We mentioned the cruise control. But did we talk about its LCD screen, traction control, disengageable ABS, and smartphone connectivity? Now we have.
The KLE 650 has everything it needs, without going overboard. No riding modes? So what… Every rider has one as standard: it’s called the right hand.

Taking the 500 Test Ride Further
This KLE 650 comes across more as a“super-KLE-500” than a true competitor to the Ténéré. Its style evokes the adventures of Indiana Jones, while its practicality seems more suited to riding it to the campus where he works. While it doesn’t intend to take on the T7 in off-road terrain—neither on paved nor unpaved roads—nor can it compete with its electronics, it can, however, give it a run for its money when it comes to price. The price difference is expected to be around 3,000 euros.
An SE version rides alongside it, featuring as bonuses an Up&Down shifter, a pair of hand guards, a color TFT screen, an aluminum skid plate, a USB-C port, tubeless rims, and a larger windshield.
