presentation of the RC 390 R 2018
It's been a long time since KTM left it to its roadsters to develop sport fever. When it comes to pure sportiness, the RC 390 is the strongest model in the range. Not enough to inspire or attract high-caliber riders, who are more interested in the ZX-10R or R1.
On the other hand, it's a model of choice for the up-and-coming category in the WSBK microcosm: the Supersport 300. As a result, the little pistarde is getting a little bigger in this R version, to light up the bridge between the road and the compèt.
it's not easy to recognize the RC 390 R at first glance. The bodywork is very similar to that of the standard model, as if to blur the lines. But KTM's main concern is the chassis. With a big plus in front and rear suspension. The WP elements are fully adjustable, and custom-designed for this R model. The riding position is more aggressive, with a new machined fork crown under which a pair of bracelets are anchored. New CNC-machined brake and clutch levers reinforce the "Ready to race" inspiration.
Few changes on the engine side, apart from a shorter intake manifold to broaden the mono's power range and boost overall efficiency.
At 50% more than the RC 390, this R is a first step towards the SSP300.
But
This is just a glimpse of what the kit will allow. It comprises 230 parts, but only 50 will be distributed each year. The kit complies with FIM regulations and allows for a serious transformation of the machine. In the big box, you'll find a titanium Akrapovic exhaust system, a racing electronics box, an STM clutch, a shifter, a racing wiring harness, a pair of rims, a more efficient radiator, a set of special track cladding, remote controls and lots of additional parts.
This kit is a game-changer in terms of time, and budget. Expect to pay 11,000 euros for it. After that, all you have to do is put aside your vacations and head off to the main European circuits to battle it out in the little cauldron of Superbike.
