from 1995 to 2025R - The symbolism of BMW's plush roadster
the big roadster goes back...... a long way at BMW. We could place the starting point at the R 100/7 or the R 75/5. But let's start the R dynasty with the arrival of the 4-valve Boxer engine in the mid-90s. This engine marked a turning point in the history of the flat-twin, and gave unprecedented impetus to the range.
the R 1100 R roadster immediately showed its classy looks and top-notch rideability. The next generation, the 1150, takes all the features to the next level. BMW begins to make a splash in this category with a surprising Rockster version.
the arrival of the 1200 engine brought with it a modernity of style and spirit. Power rises sharply, with 109 hp. In 2011, the cylinder heads are upgraded to double ACT and the bike is given a slight facelift.
2015 sees the R 1200 R take on an ever more dynamic style. The electronics are much more present, but most important is the arrival of the (partially liquid) cooled engine. The Boxer produces 125 horsepower. The front axle is no longer guided by the Telelever system, replaced by the forks of the S 1000 R.
four years later, the roadster is even more technologically advanced, while at the same time boosting its power. The block grew to 1,254 cm3, boasting 136 hp and a very hefty 14.5 mkg of torque.
the next stage comes in mid-2025, with the adoption of the 145 hp 1300 and, above all, a completely new look. More modern (almost too much so), more dynamic, more fun, the R 1300 R changes direction, but not desire.
