presentation of the 650 X-Cape 2022

Moto-Morini returns to the trail segment with a new, trendier approach. The Italian brand has put the GranPasso 1200, its big sporty trail bike of 10 years ago, behind it, and is moving towards a mid-size adventure.

The new 650 X-Cape is the latest addition to the Zhongneng subsidiary's range. Yes, Morini is part of the big Chinese group. But let's ignore that. Let's take a look at where this bike will take us: in THE new emerging niche, that of versatile, off-road trail bikes with reasonable displacement. As witnessed by the 700 Ténéré and Tuareg660, after flooding their ranges with maxi-trail-GTs, manufacturers are feeling another appetite for adventure.

This is where the X-Cape comes in to offer its services, where the all-purpose machine must also be able to crush trails. With its elongated torso, stilt-like profile, crocodile-walking wheels and Jack Colton aplomb, the need for adventure is obvious. Admittedly, the 19" front wheel isn't as engaging as a 21 " for off-roading, but the whole package is an invitation to get out and about. The spoked wheels are fitted with Pirelli Scorpion Rally Str treaded tires, enough to lift a few stones.

The choice of engine also reflects Morini's new direction. There's no question of going back to the big 1200; the brand wants to be more democratic. The X-Cape's tubular steel frame is fitted with a more modest twin-cylinder engine. Also present in the Seiemmezzo roadster, this 649 cm3 block is rated at 60 hp and 6 mkg. A lower figure than the competition, where Yamaha and Aprilia offer 74 and 80 horsepower respectively. In this respect, the Chinese influence makes itself felt: their products rarely reach the displacement/power ratio of the Japanese or the Europeans. The bike is rated at 175 km/h with this engine. To make it more accessible to a wider public, it will also be available in A2 version.

Moto-Morini X-Cape 650 by the way, where does this parallel twin come from? It's hard to say, especially as the parent company specializes in small-displacement bikes and doesn't have this block in its organ bank. A brand-new mill designed in-house? A partnership with a local group? To be continued...
Where the bike is going, on the other hand, we're more certain. With its large, fully-adjustable 50 mm inverted fork and more generous travel than a trail bike (175 mm front, 165 mm rear), its wheels and profile, the X-Cape is ready for forest outings without grimacing.

Without skimping on technology. Asian motorcycles are known for their aggressive pricing, but also for their penchant for tech... especially when it shows. The 650 X-Cape is equipped with an attractive 7-inch TFT color display, featuring elegant graphics. The lighting is full LED, there's a Bosch 9.1 ABS system that can be deactivated, a dual USB socket and, it seems, smartphone connectivity as well as tire pressure monitoring.

On the chassis side, the steel frame is surrounded by an aluminum swingarm, a Marzocchi fork, a KYB shock with multiple adjustments, an 18-liter fuel tank, an adjustable saddle peaking at 820 mm or 845 mm, an adjustable windshield, brakes with 298 mm discs at the front and 255 mm at the rear, with double-piston calipers - all in 213 kilos dry weight. Oh yes, weight is always a problem for the Middle Kingdom.

Moto-Morini X-Cape 650 for lovers of commercial geostrategy.... Chinese or Italian? the Moto-Morini 650 X-Cape was developed in Trivolzio, near Bologna, at the brand's headquarters, but will be built in China and re-tested on its return to Italy.

A number of optional extras will give the X-Cape the look of a great adventurer, including heated handgrips, rally-raid-style panniers and top-case, crash bars, a large bubble, handguards, etc....

Morini should turn some heads with his machine, not only with its claims but also with its price. The X-Cape is aggressively priced at 7,599 euros, just above the CB 500 X. The version with tubeless spoke rims will cost an extra 400 euros. The X-Cape will fit right in between the classic mid-range trails and the Benelli TRK 502, its rival of choice.

to celebrate the brand's 85th anniversary, the X-Cape is also available in a "Gold Wheels" edition. As the name suggests, the wheels are gold-plated. No other special features to report, except that its availability in France has not yet been announced.

French Leon08 Model 2021
this machine is inspired by many other models in terms of aesthetics, but for me it has no personality, and a Chinese engine, well, no! Rating : 3/5
French Dimitri Model 2021
I tried it out during a test day during which we had to compare "6 medium-displacement trails"
The comparo was actually one of two "true trails", i.e., capable of off-road riding on unpaved roads. It has it all: good ground clearance, an ideal position with wide handlebars, mixed tires, sufficient torque. And its looks give it a rally-raid feel that makes you want to venture off-road
Yes, it's tall, but the seat is quite narrow, especially at the front. The fuel tank is oddly shaped and narrow, but it's easy to ride standing up. All in all, it's a very easy bike to get to grips with, but beware for riders under 170 cm. During our test day, it wasn't the girls' favorite bike, just for that... Its price is quite attractive, but the network is not sufficiently developed (in Belgium at any rate). Yes, it's built in China, but name me one brand that doesn't have any contracts in China or Asia (apart from Guzzi, for the moment). It's got charm and it's worth the detour...

I tried it out this weekend
The 1st sensation is the lack of power, but as the kilometers go by, you find yourself winding up and taking advantage of all its qualities
It's a motorcycle that lets you enjoy yourself in complete safety, with angles, chassis and braking that totally satisfy me, and a beautiful face to boot
It's a totally usable bike, and power isn't everything!
Definitely my next ride.
Rating : 4/5
Il y a un mais...
Motorcycle bought new in standard size (845mm seat for a man of 1m81), 2000km covered to date and returned to the dealer after 150km for a front end slam: floating discs with a lot of play + steering play to be tightened
The TFT display is temperamental (sometimes not lighting up)
Apart from that, it's a very good bike, surprisingly at ease on the road as much as on paths, and which makes you forget its weight as long as you keep a bit of speed
The only flaw for my taste: too much plastic to dismantle for basic maintenance (cleaning air filter, checking spark plugs, replacing coolant, etc.) after off-road rides

Little run-in ride with my649 Morini after riding a multistrada 950 I appreciate the flexibility of the X cape and it is not without recovery on the contrary a treat with Chinese Italian less character than a ducati but that happiness adapted to my way of riding you can buy it soon on the roads Rating : 5/5

Original, I've seen it in person at the store
But frankly, an Italian made in China is a real eliminatory blasphemy for me
I'm keeping my barely broken-in '92 transalp

In the article, we're told that we don't know where the engine comes from, so they should have dug a little deeper. People will be happy: these are ER-6N engines, so in terms of reliability, they're top-notch, which will reassure many. Rating : 5/5
La seule pour les petits
French Nico Model 2021
Having had the opportunity to try it out very briefly, the engine is really very smooth, and to date it's the only bike on which both my feet touch the ground properly without the lowered seat. The rubber footrests are held in place by a single screw, which you remove to switch to off-road footrests
In short, a perfect beginner's bike, very very well equipped with a GPS not mentioned above.
As far as I'm concerned, it's ordered!

Hi Nico, how tall are you?
I'm interested in this bike but the 82cm seat makes me a bit hesitant
I had a 2020 africa twin with 825 cm low seat and I wasn't covered.
I'm 1.69cm short legs
