presentation of the 961 Commando Street 2019
Distributed in confidential doses, the Norton 961 Commando continues on its way, with little modification since its birth, apart from the MKII improvements. In any case, it doesn't need to follow trends or the pressures of fashion. Its superb looks speak for themselves.
At Donington Hall, we're keen to give it a little something extra on occasion. Recently, the California version expanded its investigations. Here it is, too, in a most successful transformation, the STREET.
not exactly a transformation, but rather a reinterpretation. It's the vision of Henry Cole, artisan of the British motorcycle world with his Gladstone brand, TV presenter and producer, and Guy Willison. The two men worked on the Commando 961 until they came up with this Street, inspired by a Harley-Davidson 750 Flat Tracker.
Although based on the Sport model, they succeeded in giving the 961 Street its own personality, without changing the engine or chassis. Stuart Gardner, Norton's boss, was so pleased with the work that he decided to produce a limited edition of 50.
like the other Commando models, the Street is powered by a superb 961 cm3 twin-cylinder engine, delicious to look at and exhilarating to listen to. It boasts 80 horsepower and, above all, a character that is a credit to English engineering. The suspension is all Öhlins, the brakes are Brembo with radial calipers, and the atmosphere is that of the 70s.
The Commando Street's designers have completely reworked the stern, with a long, slender aluminum section on top of which sits a beautiful alcantara-embossed seat. The fuel tank is new, also in aluminum. A Fatbar-style Renthal handlebar gives a more urban riding position, the exhaust is much more minimalist and a series of parts enhance the luxurious feel. Carbon is used for the plate holder, windscreen and chain guard.
another beautiful Norton, but one that few enthusiasts will be able to appreciate. The price is 17,950 pounds, or approximately 20,500 euros at today's exchange rate - excluding tax. Nothing exceptional for a Norton model, yet with a hint of exclusivity that's so typical, so British.

Nortons are hand-built, and I invite anyone to get up close and personal with one to get the full measure of it. So yes, to some it may seem expensive, but we're not talking about a mass-produced machine (only in small quantities), and the materials used are top-of-the-range. Simply a motorcycle for motorcycle lovers. Rating : 5/5 Respond to Billotrack
