presentation of the XT 660 R 2012

the first XT was born in 1976.3 decades, evolving with the times and technology. Originally an XT 500, it underwent its major evolution in '89 when it went up to 600 cm3, changing its design but not its spirit. Today, the XT 600 E has disappeared on the altar of pollution, to be replaced by the XT 660 R. The XTZ 660 R is well known for its adaptation of the now-defunct XTZ 660 block. The cylinder head is no longer 5 but 4 valves. Internal parts have been optimized, of course, and cooling is now water-cooled. As the XT enters the 21st century, it is entitled to the bonus of fuel injection, guaranteeing greater flexibility and range of use, but above all essential to meet Euro 2 anti-pollution standards. The frame is a classic tubular steel frame with a new design, containing the engine oil in its upper section. The bike's plastic has been refreshed, but remains in line with its lineage. The multi-reflector headlamp unit and dual exhausts add a touch of aggression, while the mudguard is more unusual: one half is raised just below the headlamp (as on all trails), while the other licks the wheel to protect the engine from splashes. A new, all-digital instrument panel, but still no rev counter. Suspension travel remains unchanged, so the XT can still be ridden in the countryside, YAMAHA XT 660 Ralthough the city will always be the terrain where it will be most used. And here's some good news: the 660 is equipped with a coded-key anti-theft system. The braking system is beefier, with a large 298 mm front disc - almost supermotard-like. With all these improvements, the XT gains in size, but not in weight: it's 13 kg heavier. One of Yamaha's flagship models is back for another 10 years.

on the road, engine behavior remains true to its lineage: hard-working, with traction faithful to the mono architecture, but with no real excitement. Despite fuel injection, don't think about going too low in the rev range. it bangs, it chokes, and the mill starts up again without any real care. A mono is a mono. Still, it's smoother than the 600, and climbs serenely up to near top speed. There's no need to reach high speeds on this machine to get excited. Too optimistic a corner entry? The XTR takes you out of it. Excellent weight distribution, a rigid chassis and narrow tires: a good cocktail that allows the bike to turn in a flash. What's more, with its wide handlebars and large front wheel, you'll be able to make up for any errant trajectory. The machine doesn't benefit from the latest technologies like the R1, such as a die-cast aluminum chassis or a linerless engine; but it does demonstrate a nice homogeneity. Handy and accessible, it protects the spine thanks to its high-travel suspension and its ability to smooth out road irregularities without compromising efficiency.
YAMAHA XT 660 RA rigorous trail bike, the XTR lacks character. We expect more from a big single. And the price has gone up. Too much, perhaps. For the same price, you could be looking at a Kawa ER-6n or a Suz 650 Bandit. The game's not up, but the XT has won back its adventurous soul.

The classic gromono...Even if it pushes, it's the kind of quiet bike, you don't have to pull on it too much in the low revs or in the high revs...Perfect for grown-ups, for solo rides, more just for two...The trail mono you either love or hate...I've been loving it for 30 years... Rating : 5/5

Hi there,

not long ago, I was the proud owner of a 125-hp SV 1000 S, and I took a trip to Morocco with my partner... we rented bikes, including an XTR 660... since then, I've sold the SV and bought the XTR. 75 horsepower less, and yet I'm having so much more fun. I feel much more of a biker pushing the XTR hard (I'm talking about riding, not top speed), than using my 1000SV at 30%

Enjoy the ride,

Good stuff: last trail worthy of a mono
not too heavy, fairly well finished, retains the spirit of the trail bikes of the 80s and 90s, liquid-cooled, good lighting

some not so good: Chinese parts (brake and clutch cables and sheaths; brake and clutch handles; engine hoses) mediocre Italian fork (can't match HONDA's showa)

not good at all: manifolds under the engine, no hoof, no package holder for the top case, electronic sensors everywhere, zero wind protection, far too much electronics for the overall management of the bike (not just the engine, for which injection and catalytic converter would have been enough to meet standards), which presages expensive ageing and car-like breakdowns
Yamaha overdid it, supposedly for our own good, but I don't believe in it any more than I do in Santa Claus, although they do have the merit of still making trail singles... Honda used to do better in terms of quality and equipment (everything on it, not optional extras), but now that they've stopped doing anything, the choice is quickly made.

very playful bike, especially in the mountains, where you get scared when your feet touch the ground...without the original tires coming off!
well, it's not designed for highway use, or your arms will quickly get tired, but the limited fuel consumption makes it a nice propeller
the only downsides: the fork is too soft, and the weight makes it difficult to go too hard on the trails, and it's uncomfortable to try to ride on a trickle of gas, as the injection seems incompatible with smooth riding on a mono

barely two years and already 30000 km with this bike! the bike is great, it's the dealer that's not going to work at all! enough to put you off riding a yamaha !!!!! if not the perfect rollovers with this mono !!!!! the Sunday sportsmen laugh less after following a 660 !!! Rating : 5/5

49 years old, I've just got my license, and traded in my 125 varadero (big calf) for this characterful bike, a real joy, very easy to ride for the beginner that I am, despite a few jolts at low revs. The riding position (high up) allows good anticipation, the noise of the big mono on the downshift is great, and the braking is satisfactory without more

i'm 59 years old and have had 17 motorcycles, including a BM R GS 1200GS and 4 big mono yam and honda trail bikes
With the 660R I've done 15,000 km and I have to say it's an excellent all-rounder, reliable and economical, with an excellent frame and braking. It has a few minor flaws, but what bike doesn't? I sold it and bought a new one!

Hi Xavier, like you, I've been looking for a machine capable of combining raids in Morocco, city riding and road riding. This good mono seems to be the right compromise, comfortable, robust, not too heavy if you compare it to the other big Trails on the market; only weaknesses: the pots are too exposed, the lack of shoe (plan 150€) a tank a bit limited for a trip and a not so good upright riding position. That said, rumor has it that this machine is being used for a number of rally-raids in Africa. Reassuring, isn't it? Rating : 5/5
French fred66 Model 2004
super moto i brought some personal touch potection of the engine with the sabot. i changed the pots for a line crd.pignon exit of limps i put a 14 more torque in low rpm limps better étagée better resumption
then i put on michelin T63s, very good grip for trail riding. i've now done 10500km since july, a lot of trail riding in the eastern pyrenees, and my XTR hasn't had a single flaw

i've heard that the engine is more fragile and less pleasant than the old one! Rating : 5/5
French pier-o Model 2004
i like it a lot, the strong points are familiar to everyone (torque, low fuel consumption, fairly comfortable), so the weak points are
- knocking at low revs (injection?)
- front brake + fork too soft (spins a bit under heavy braking)
- i find it a little understeer on bends and roundabouts (but that's probably due to my riding position)
- the exhausts underneath aren't great for longevity
i once hit a protective wall on a freeway interchange (entering a curve too fast), and it crushed my pot (a little), but I had a good laugh afterwards
i bought it to keep it for a very long time, because I regret my first xt600 (1989).

French Bobs Model 2004
super nice, but the gearbox is a tad odd when shifting into 3rd gear, taking a long time to find and not always straightforward. It's a pity it's so overweight, because 10 or 15 kg less would allow it to be more "off-road". Apart from that, it's very pleasant, comfortable (though perhaps a little hard to hold, six hours a day, unless you've got a marsmallow butt), easy to handle and supple
In what remains "homologable", without doubt one of the best choices in its category, especially given the price (5,500 euros here).

I've just placed an order! It's finally here! It's so much fun to ride on bumpy country roads, thanks to its magical suspension, and the big pistons give you a lot of torque, even at very low revs!
At last, a bike you can enjoy without risking your license!

living in the alsace region of france, there's no shortage of mountains, muddy roads, old riverbeds and the like! I'm looking forward to mud baths..
it follows in the footsteps of the legendary xt 500, but jap and other brands have to move with the times..

I've got this bike and it's already 8000 km long, so it's essential to put a hoof on it, otherwise you'll have to put a garbage can under it!! ????? comfort has nothing to do with a bandit, and doing more than 500 days is a physical challenge A par cela j'ai fait le mariol dans la montagne en pneu d'origine cela passe elle est super maniable mais son poids empeche la bou car je ne la releverai pas trois fois dans la journée!in town, it's the tool of the trade, despite the fact that sometimes 4X4s and utility vehicles like the Kangoo get in the way, and the XT R passes with flying colors! the fuel consumption is good but the original pots are heavydo i hope the two in one to ganier my 10 kilo it lifts defois en premiere but the kit chain adapted to give him speed and too long what requires the embreilliage. the third and the tools of this becan it gives in low and high regime the Japanese gabaries sabstenir otherwise with the desente of a trotoire and more foot!! it's my first mono after a 600 fazer incomparable but I'm having fun like a kid on the road who turns the cal rear foot touches the ground and no sensation of loss of aderance it's cool good for beginners nice for experience in my opinion its mono noise I love !!!!!!!!!!!!! i'm getting ready for a trip to Morocco in the spring, and since I've sold my 1200bandit, all that's left is to invest in this pretty little bike to take me to new horizons... well, I placed the order... Rating : 5/5
i haven't had a chance to try it out yet, so I won't comment on the machine's technical qualities. The lines are in the spirit of today, but it's very plastic (radiator cover), the huge pots framing a tiny light (very ugly) don't please me at all, and neither do the headlight optics. The XT should have remained a simple, no-frills motorcycle (one engine, one handlebar and one set of wheels) Rating : 5/5
