Motorcycle specifications Yamaha850 MT-09 Tracer 2015 Between roadster, road and emotion

On-Off Road

The MT-09 is not just a widely acclaimed roadster. It's also a platform for developing more visually striking editions, and a working basis for models with other ambitions. Just like this Tracer version! A good dose of hard work allows it to change dimension and even category. If this extension of the name, Tracer, is a little dubious, the American appellation is much better suited to its appetite: FJ-09. The MT-09 Tracer's identity and equipment are far-reaching. A mix of roadster and tourer, with a hint of urban trail... There's no doubt about it: this is indeed the descendant of the TDM. Although Yamaha never makes this clear in its sales pitch. And understandably so: the Tracer is a step up from the TDM. Let's take a look:

first of all, the Tracer takes up the essential technical and mechanical basis of the MT-09 (logical...). The 3-cylinder engine delivers 115 hp with a cross-plane philosophy, and the die-cast aluminum frame maintains the machine's dynamism. That alone is light-years ahead of the TDM 900 and its 86 twin-cylinder drums. But let's leave this lady to her memories. The Tracer is already heading for a more spirited destiny.
One look is all it takes to realize that we're dealing with something quite different from the original roadster. Serious styling changes the whole look of the MT, with a fork head reminiscent of a certain generation of Fazer. The contours of the fuel tank are completely different, and to great effect. With its triangular side panels, extensively revised rear end and cheeky touring face, the MT-09 Tracer exudes more sex appeal and presence than the original roadster. The effect isn't just visual, however, as Yamaha has also worked in depth to ensure that performance is not of the same order.

Yamaha 850 MT-09 Tracer 2015

For a start, the ergonomics are quite different. Here, the seat is in two parts. The passenger is entitled to attractive handgrips, and the rider can choose between two seat heights. The riding position has been raised and can be further refined, as the handlebars can be repositioned forwards or backwards. Protection is delegated to a pair of handguards and an adjustable bubble. It can be adjusted to 3 positions without tools, but with gaps of only 15 mm. A little finger each time, not sure it makes much difference. But the attention to detail is commendable.
Looking at this size, you'd think the Tracer would have had greater suspension travel than the MT-09... Not so. 137 mm at the front and 130 mm at the rear for both. However, the settings have been revised to suit the rider's needs.
And there are those little extras that make life easier, that quickly make the difference in everyday life, that can make or break your day. I'm thinking of the standard center stand, the 12V socket next to the dashboard, and enough range to ride without thinking about it. The Tracer's fuel tank is 4 liters larger, and Yam claims 300 km between fill-ups.

Yamaha 850 MT-09 Tracer 2015

Silhouette, ergonomics, protection... and electronics. The Tracer really stands out. As on the MT-09, the D-Mode system lets you choose 3 types of engine behavior; but they're not the same. They are designed to offer a smoother response, something you'd expect from a road-minded motorcycle. Active safety is completed by TCS disconnectable traction control and ABS, both supplied as standard. Quite a well-equipped MT-09 Tracer, and for the right weight. 210 kilos fully loaded.
Not only is it not ugly, it looks good with LEDs (ah, the good pun...). The dual optics use this technology for the dials, headlights and daytime running lights. And it can be adjusted without tools. The MT-09 Tracer also features a dual-window digital instrument panel. The screen on the left provides basic information (speed, rpm in bar graphs, time, fuel, TCS, D-Mode, etc.) - the one on the right deals with convenience (trips, info, engaged speed, consumption, ambient T°, and the temperature of heated grips if you buy them as extras). This instrumentation block is unprecedented among MTs, yet... A touch of déjà-vu... It doesn't come from the 1200 Super Ténéré by any chance?! A tourer's face and a sportsman's heart, the promise is tempting.

Yamaha 850 MT-09 Tracer 2015

By becoming a Tracer, the MT-09 seems to be reconciling the spirit of the TDM and the Fazer, while seizing the ardor of the CP3 engine. Yamaha has created a cocktail that is sure to please, perhaps as much as it did during the FZS 600 Fazer era. With pricing following the same aggressive policy as for the roadster, the success of the series could well accelerate.

I've had the pleasure of riding an MT09 Tracer for 3 years now, and I have to admit that this bike fills me with happiness every time I get on it... It takes some getting used to, as with every bike, but it's easy to get the hang of. You have to be careful with the power, because I had a Versys 650 and the difference is quite significant. It's a safe, comfortable bike (the shock absorber was changed on mine), powerful, that holds the road well, and above all, versatile. You can do everything with it, except TT. You can do anything with it, except TT. To sum up, change the shock absorber and you'll have a very pleasant bike that's easy to ride. If I had to quibble, the only small flaw would be the intake, which may seem a little rough to some, but otherwise nothing to say. Happy riding! Rating : 5/5
Super machine for me nothing to say comfort power only pleasure Rating : 5/5

I'm 1.70m tall, no lowering kit, low seat position. I have a 2015 MT09 tracer, with 40,000km on the clock, gears go like butter, original shock absorber, METZELER tires and frankly, I wanted to change bike, but I couldn't, it's so endearing! I've even ridden it on the circuit a few times, and it's a lot of fun, only lacking a cruise control, but hey! apart from that, it's a lively, low-maintenance bike
travels: IRELAND,PORTUGAL,GERMANY,BELGIUM,FRANCE
FAULTS: Tighten the bubble, which tends to loosen
Original tires need changing (soap)
At idle: a few couplings
Let's not be too demanding: this is a motorcycle, not a car! It's a living motorcycle, and this one is!

i've had a tracer MT09 for 1 year now, bought second hand, it has 10,000 kms from 2015, and I'm very happy with it, but I've changed the rear shock absorbers (soch factory, £400) and the lowering kit (I'm 1M72 tall, it's perfect with the low seat), the gears creak a little, but I think that's well known at tracer, apart from that, it's great, you can go, have a good trip.Vince. Good evening Phil ,
You specify your height, 1.70 m.
I'm the same height;
What measures have you been able to find and implement to reconcile height and good foot contact with the ground when stopped, apart from reducing the saddle height?
Thank you for your attention and reply, as I'm about to buy this machine.
Best regards

A top-notch engine that would benefit from a more stable front end and more even rear damping. With a more comfortable seat, we'd be close to perfection. Coming from a KTM, I'm pleasantly surprised by the smooth, torquey engine. The power is there and then, and more than sufficient. If you're still hesitating, don't waste any more time, this bike is perfect for everyday use, whatever the weather or road conditions. The full-LED lighting is amazingly efficient, and the finish is excellent for the price. Please note: if you're over 1m80 tall, you'll need to change the original bubble, as the wind blows directly into the helmet, causing a lot of noise... a shorter bubble such as a mra racing or ermax sport will solve this problem. great for both solo and duo use
quick and easy to handle
be careful though, when in sport mode, it pushes and straightens very easily.

Super bike I can confirm, bought in March 2015, 24,000 kms to date, solo / duo, cool, everyday and sport, it knows how to do it all.
200 kms / day in Paris, duo vacation with heavy luggage in Corsica 2015, this year it'll be Corsica again, but with Venice and Tuscany as the main course.
My 13-year-old son loves it (my other half rides a 600 CBF), but with the new Tracer 700, she may be changing bikes.
My dream?
A 1200 Tracer with the same character, cardan drive and 22-liter fuel tank.
As for the rest, I'm fine even with a heavy load, and I'm only 1m73 tall.
Bonne route à tous et tous

Tried and ordered on the same day!

Nearly 1000 kilometers on the odometer today.

It's the perfect synthesis of versatility, a plethora of equipment, a mind-boggling engine, a light, precise and rigid chassis, truck brakes, a splendid and original line that you can't mistake for another when you see it go by, or even when you hear it, and all this for less than 10,000â'¬.

Very probably a masterstroke on Yamaha's part (and not the first... nor the last, no doubt), even if we've been waiting for it for a few years...

I've been using the Tracer for almost 4 months now, and I have to say that every day is a pleasure. In terms of height, I'm 1.74 m tall, and I have no problem putting my feet down - not flat, of course. It's a pleasure to ride this bike on long journeys, as it is on a daily basis. Rating : 5/5

I have a 2012 Fazer 800 and wanted to replace it with the MT 09 Tracer but I can't: I'm 1m75...
But why did you put the seat at 845 mm minimum? What's more, YAMAHA has the stupidity to offer another option, that of making the saddle 2 cm higher!
But who are they targeting?
So, I think I'll go for BMW or Triumph, it's the world upside down.

I'm 1.73 m tall and do very well in the saddle. OK, in the upright position, I don't put my feet flat, but that doesn't bother me. It's just a bit of a balancing act when approaching red lights. Rating : 5/5

Slt, I'm 1m75 myself and I really don't have any problems with that, except perhaps when manoeuvring a loaded top case duo (the two of us are 150kg, so it's a bit tricky). But it's nothing to be ashamed of. Rating : 4/5

Good evening Locutuce,

As you may already know, there is a low saddle option: ref 2PP-247C0-10-00

Narrower, lower rider saddle that replaces the original saddle to improve ground clearance.

32 mm lower than the original saddle
Made from the same high-quality materials as the original saddle.

To further lower the machine, you can use the lowering tie-rod kit sold separately.

Yours faithfully

1m75, you must have your feet on the ground, in the "low saddle" position. Unless you have very short legs and a very long torso.
You'll find the same problem on the Tiger 800 and BM's 800gs (I've had both)
Bonne route à toi

Do you want to go for the 800 BM because the saddle is too high? Precisely, I'm selling mine....justement because with the comfort saddle I'm up to 90 cm high. And wide too.
With this kind of beast, you'd better have an enduro background to handle the wiggles at the start and finish. Or else be 1m 80 and over!

After scouring the comparos in every direction, I went to Yam, saw a "Matt Grey" in the window, negotiated and left with it the following week. Since then, 9,000km of happiness. What needs to be done urgently: saw off the left-hand lug on the pilot footrest (too close to the side stand lug, so it's too heavy and risks putting it on the ground). Engine: unpleasant jerks hamper smoothness in town, even in B mode (rain). Debriding to 115hp almost totally eradicates this fault. In full throttle, I didn't notice any difference in power, but the ride really changed - for the better. On the downside, the frame has a tendency to play chewing-gum in curves when the tarmac is uneven, but at speeds that are largely prohibited. It's scary at first, and you're quickly reminded that you haven't bought a hypersport. But once you've got it out on the road, you'll be delighted with its duo capabilities. Last but not least, the boiler: while its fuel injection needs fine-tuning, the A mode and traction control deactivation make it a lot of fun! It rears up very easily, and cornering is no problem... until it rubs! The original tires suit my needs, but watch out for their temperature. Having owned a Fazer 600 in the 99'-2000's, I can't help noticing that it's the same recipe - in XL version though! In short, we got to know each other and we quickly adopted each other! Rating : 4/5

It's the bridage in France that's giving it the hiccups, just switch it to full.
A ground wire under the saddle AND a manipulation on the dashboard (one without the other won't work).

Hello

Initially, the MT09 Tracer ABS was my 4th choice after the Africa-Twin version 2015, the Crossrunner and the GS800 adventure.
But I tried it first and nothing to say: for the same displacement, it's much cheaper than its rivals (3,000â'¬ difference with the Crossrunner), more powerful, with more torque, very nice design (there's not that duckbill you get on a Honda or BMW), ...
Great throttle response, both at low and high revs, and even under power.

My dealership is very commercial and professional

One small downside: the gearbox is a bit dry, and the red and Race blue models are in high demand. So it takes a while to order them...

I've been waiting for my Tracer since February 27, delivery scheduled for June 12, well okay, already there's a lot of fuss, 3 and a half months to get a new bike, I should have ordered a Ferrari, in short, but on the 12th I get a phone call from the dealer, to tell me that the bike will be in the dealership on the 16th. Congratulations to Yamaha. I expect a very nice commercial gesture, if he knows what that means, I doubt it!!!!!!! I'm very angry. Rating : 4/5

Tried it 10 days ago, SMT sold it... In short, as someone who doesn't buy new bikes, I'm on the verge of cracking... A Japanese bike with a European philosophy, in short, I've always ridden a Yamaha two-cylinder. Here I find the spirit of the SMT with added options and ergonomics, lower fuel consumption and reduced maintenance costs compared to the KTM. The only downside is that the chassis isn't quite up to scratch, especially the rear, which pumps a bit in sport mode. Rating : 4/5

a 30-minute test ride was enough for me to decide to buy the new Mt-09 Tracer! I was looking for a bike as versatile as my ex-F800GS, but more "sporty", and the result is there: the Tracer is light, precise and dynamic, even if the tires are slow to warm up and give little feedback. The engine is fantastic and the selection light, a real rubber band, tip-top for country roads! Comfort is there for the taking, with a suspension that's rather dry but filters out the roughness of the road. I looked for real faults, but in the end, after testing a dozen bikes, this is the one that ticks the most boxes. The price is more than fair! Bravo Yam! Rating : 4/5

this new Yam has everything it takes to become a best-seller. Its lines are very attractive, with 2 full-LED headlights and a formidable 3-cylinder engine that proved its worth on the MT-09 roadster. It's a shame that Yamaha didn't keep the analog rev counter, which would have given it a sportier feel. I'm looking forward to seeing it on the market for a test ride, and will most likely fall for it as a replacement for my XJ6 diversion. Bravo to the Yamaha design office! Rating : 4/5

If you have a good head on your shoulders, you can tackle a mt09 tracer without any problem. I went from a 650 bandit to a full zx9r and I've never had any problems. Rating : 5/5

Very interesting bike, I think! A good roadster base with character and good power, a well-placed price (and not 12,000 euros and sometimes even more like some competitors!), a racy look, a well-contained weight.....Bravo! As a replacement for my KTM SMT in the near future, when I switch to a three-cylinder? To be seen.....I'll go and try it out in any case..... Rating : 4/5

Hello !

I'm surprised that you didn't mention the Triumph Tiger 800 among the competitors! After all, it's a three-cylinder too!

I'm a Tiger owner, and I must admit I'm impatiently waiting to try out this Yam, which seems to me to be in the same vein, with a few euros less for better equipment and a more peppy engine! Those Japanese, they're good!

Aesthetic priority: Yes, but why didn't you protect the engine a little more and, above all, win over the rider with the lower part of the bubble? I own an old Fazer Gt (2005) and I've rarely seen a fairing that protects the rider so completely without being too bulky (there's the air, but also the rain).
I hope the Tracer will be at least as reliable as my old Fazer: 65,000 KM and all original except for the red light bulb and the tires. 9 years on, all I have to do is turn the ignition key.

i hope they don't soften the engine...
the three modes of the mt09 will go very well with the tracer...I've just tried a mt09 to test the three modes and it's very good, you don't have to round off anything...

At first glance, rather nice. Well in line with the TDM (I have one).
I do, however, regret that (since the Yamaha ad boasts of a motorcycle that's designed to swallow miles) the suspension settings were adjusted by a thumbwheel.
A GT bubble worthy of the name, and passenger footrests that aren't a vulgar metal rod with no rubber! Unworthy of a real little FJR...
