presentation of the YZF-R1M 1000 2020

In the crucible of lap times and trajectories, the R1M doesn't wait for the years to leave marks on its black carbon skin. Like its R1 sibling (without the M), 2020 brings its share of modifications to keep it in tip-top shape. Efficiency for both, accomplishment for the M, greed for the riders.

Let's briefly review the evolutions of the 22nd Yamaha R1: engine optimizations to pass Euro5 and retain its 200 hp, reworked fairing (a little) with aerodynamic efficiency improved by 5%, angle-adjustable 2-stage ABS, engine brake management, modified start-stop assistant, redesigned exhaust with four catalytic converters, Bridgestone Battlax RS11 tires - all the details are developed in the R1 data sheet. But what really interests us is how the R1 M exploits its personal strengths. First and foremost, its semi-active Öhlins suspension.

The Swedish manufacturer's "Electronic Racing Suspension" system is more efficient, with a new 43 mm-diameter pressurized Öhlins ERS NPX inverted fork. In the fork leg, a cylinder containing gas exerts an internal pressure of 0.6 MPa. This gas reduces cavitation of the fork oil caused by the negative pressure produced during rebound. The result is more consistent damping and enhanced agility. As a result, the rear shock absorber is modified accordingly in terms of preload.
Automatic or manual, the system lets you either trust it to constantly adjust the settings, or fine-tune the suspension yourself and fine-tune the chassis without taking out a single tool. The only drawback is weight. With this equipment, the R1M is slightly heavier than the standard model (+1 kg).

the other special feature of the M is its carbon bodywork. Since the first R1M, this noble material has been used for most of the fairing, until it is now also used for the rear shell. One wonders why Yam didn't do it sooner.
It's a way of saving weight and asserting its top-of-the-range status. This categorization is reinforced by a numbered badge on the airbox cover. The production number will be engraved there.

All the R1' s electronics are, of course, found on the M, except that the latter is keen to offer something extra to justify its involvement with riders. Rather, two things more.
1/ The YRC Setting application, which allows users to create their own personalized riding modes by adjusting the seven electronic control systems. The rider can choose the setting for each mode and, in some cases, disable certain electronic controls.
2/ Y-TRAC. This is a telemetry recording and analysis system. It enables users to access the machine's Communications Control Unit (CCU) and download a range of data to a mobile device. With Y-TRAC, it's possible to view and replay real-time Google Maps files of a racetrack, analyze and compare a host of information, from engine speed to lean angle to acceleration, and find out when the various electronic assistants were activated.

As in the early days, buying an R1M isn't like ordering a cake from the patissier, even if in both cases you want to eat it right away. First, you have to reserve it online at https://r1m.yamaha-motor.eu/ (orders open on July 25, 2019), then confirm the order with your Yamaha dealer. After that, you'll have to pay an almost violent sum of money, which has been significantly increased since the previous version. Finally, owning an R1M will offer you certain advantages for the Yamaha Racing Experience... or rather, it should. Following the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic, the manufacturer has decided to cancel the Yamaha Racing Experience (YRE) 2020 events, scheduled to take place in Misano, Italy, on April 20 and 21, 2020, and in Le Mans, France, on June 25 and 26, 2020.
