presentation of the YZF-R1 1000 Pirovano Replica 2020
Sports bikes are undoubtedly the best way to honor riders and teams, past and present. The Yamaha R1 loves this exercise. Its generations have worn the colors of Petronas, GMT 94, Spies, FIAT MotoGP,Agostini...
...and here of the late Italian rider Fabrizio Pirovano. One of the most enduring protagonists in World Superbike history. The R1 presented here is painted in the same colors as the Yamaha YZF 750 SP n°5 with which "Piro" won his last race.
It was in 1993, at Estoril. Symbolically, Yamaha unveiled this replica edition on the same circuit 27 years later. A tribute, and a fine work of art. After its presentation for the final round of the 2020 WSBK season and an on-track salute, this unique R1 was put up for auction on Ebay - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/One-of-a-kind-Fabrizio-Pirovano-Replica-Yamaha-R1/383775664109 - The money raised will go to the Oncologia Niguarda Onlus cancer research foundation. An association that Pirovano's family has supported since his death in 2016.

The R1 Pirovano replica is an emotion from the other side, ready to slap the curves. Prepared for sport use by Yamaha Motor Europe, it limits itself to a border close to Superstock. The pink and white colors of the YZF 750 are set against a track fairing stripped of all on-road hardware. A GYTR racing saddle sits on a single-seater rear frame. A pair of slicks lets you hear the sound of rubber in the corners. A high bubble provides extra protection, while the crossplane engine blows through an Akrapovic muffler. This saves a little power and a lot of weight.
But we didn't want to overdo it. No changes to the suspension or adjustable footpegs.
Nicknamed "the King of Monza", Fabrizio Pirovano spent 13 years in the world of World Superbikes, racing in SBK and then SuperSport. His list of achievements includes 10 victories, 47 podiums, a world title in WSS, two runner-up finishes in SBK and four Italian championships, all in SBK.
In World Superbike, Piro raced Yamaha bikes for 6 years running. His hands also grasped handlebars at Suzuki, Ducati and Bimota. Emotions ran high at the last start of his life - the memory lives on in hypersport.
