presentation of the R 1250 RT 2020

She's reached it. That delicate, impalpable point of balance where nothing should be touched. The RT, the symbol of the motorcycle tourer, has reached such a level of maturity that BMW no longer dares to change either form or content. On the engine side, however, we're witnessing a major evolution. Accompanied by a breeze of technological contributions all over the machine. Enough to crush the competition? It's already done.

The RT had carefully nipped at the heels of the Pan-European, Trophy, GTR and Norge; the maxi-trailers finished them off. Today, only the FJR 1300 is left to face it, with its Japanese weapons and its big, muscle-packed 4-cylinder. The Boxer is not impressed. You'd think it would fight back with this 1250 chapter, but not at all. It simply continues its natural evolution since the advent of '4 valves per cylinder' in 1992. Ten years ago, it was fitted with double ACT, and more recently with mixed air/water cooling and a unified gearbox and engine. With the 1250, it's double-caliber. Let's take a closer look.
A little more bore, a touch more stroke, a ladleful more 84 cm3. The recipe seems too simple! BMW wants to offer more than that, a smoother vision of driving. In addition to its 1254 cm3 displacement, the engine features variable valve timing.

look closely at the cylinder heads: a Shit Cam monogram appears. This is the name of the technology the brand has been working on for some time now. The idea is to vary intake valve opening control according to engine speed. Two profiles, two ways of filling the cylinders. For each valve, there is not one but two cams - one at partial load, the other at full load, opening asynchronously to form a gas vortex. This optimizes fueling at low revs, while still delivering power at high revs. Whereas with a single cam profile, it's all a question of compromise.
How do you switch from one cam to another? By sliding the shaft. On one side, a kind of barrel controlled by an electromechanical actuator enables this movement and thus the selection of one or other set of cams.
I'll quickly list the other evolutions - toothed chain drive for the ACTs, double knock sensor, optimized lubrication, dual-jet injectors, revised exhaust system - to arrive at the Boxer's enhanced efficiency. Peak power here is 136 hp, 11 more than the 1200. Torque is even greater, with a copious 14.5 mkg, up by almost 2 mkg and comparable to a larger displacement.
And the best part isn't this increased vigor. Its availability and roundness are far more expressive. Torque is more than 11 mkg from 2000 to 8250 rpm, and more than 12 mkg between 3500 and 7750 rpm. Never before has a BMW Boxer been so powerful, not even on the HP2 Sport. A little extra bonus? It's more fuel-efficient and quieter.

As you can see, the star of this new RT generation is this engine, clearly revisited, technical to perfection, and stronger every time. But can we really speak of a generation when we see this RT so little changed in terms of looks? Everyone will agree, however, that this interstellar range was uncritical in terms of both protection and design. There's an engine cowling, several styling natures, distinctive cylinder head covers... and that's all. It's rare that a BM doesn't modernize its plastic by renewing its powertrain.

So, Madam of the Road, you're betting everything on your heart to win over the hearts of heavy-duty drivers? Hasty judgment, I'd say. We're in a phase of technological expansion where safety-enhancing modules are flourishing within sensors and algorithms.
For some time now, two driving modes (Rain / Road), ABS Pro, dynamic brake light and ASC traction control have been extending the gesture of the right hand. Hill Start Control is now standard equipment, rather than an optional extra.
By the way, what's in the R 1250 RT's additional catalog? Among the hundred or so accessories and options, you'll find Akra mufflers, HP parts, luggage, Option 719 customization parts, heated saddles with different heights, a Pro shifter, Pro riding modes (Dynamic mode + traction control), GPS, emergency call, 250 ml body + motorcycle shower gel (true story)... and something new,

It's all at the brakes. Not for the material, still very good with its 320 mm discs bitten by Brembo 4-piston radial clamps. Rather, it's about adaptation. The new Dynamic Brake Control (DBC) intervenes during heavy braking to reduce engine torque and give maximum power to the rear brake. The bike is better stabilized and brakes shorter.
For those who appreciate adaptive comfort, 'Next Generation' ESA arrives on the RT. First introduced on the R 1200 GS in 2017, this automatic damping system takes on board load. It modulates the work of the suspensions according to road conditions, driving style and choice of damping type, adjusting ride height and suspension efficiency.
I'm surprised that the design hasn't changed; it looks like everyone's working in the engine and electronics departments.

This almost makes us forget the great virtue of the BMW RT: driving! Far, long, serenely. You can still take advantage of a riding position based on decades of experience, an on-board multimedia package, a 20-liter fuel tank, suitcases ready to hold a weekend's belongings, and a seat adjustable to two heights, 805 or 825 mm. Other heights are available as options. The dashboard, still very complete with its color digital display and attractive meters, is not outdated, but could do with a little grooming. The unchanged chassis logically retains its high level of comfort, with the Telelever fork and Paralever monobracket anchored to a tubular steel frame.
And the weight? Five kilos more. How serious is that, Doctor? Just think: on a machine weighing 279 kilos, you won't notice any difference. And with the power of the engine, you'll have the impression that it's 30 kilos lighter during acceleration.

then comes the tricky part, the choice of color. This is more complicated now, as we no longer think in terms of colors, but in terms of style. On the RT, as on other Bavarian models, it's not just the paint that changes. You'll see.
- Let's keep it simple and classic, and opt for the basic color. Nice paintwork, a few touches of black, a nice touch of metallic silver. It's soft and elegant.
- The Elegance version is more precious, more elevated. More contrast with silver metallic against a dark coat, gold brake calipers and a few chrome elements
- Want to get noticed? Then there's the Sport version. A strong red color, matte gray cylinder head covers, gold brake calipers and a shorter bubble give it a more dynamic look.
- Last but not least, the Spezial versions offer a more noble look. The proprietary color scheme takes hold on more surfaces; there's chrome, specific finishing details, and a certain tendency to make you covet the 719 Options.

More self-confident than ever, BMW's tourer sets out to make driving even more rewarding, raising it to a level of superior pleasure... that the previous model had already set high. Its 1250 engine is still the talk of the town. We can always complain about the robust pricing, the endless list of options and the technological overabundance of products from the other side of the Rhine - but you have to admit that the bike is totally accomplished, efficient and serene in its missions. A BMW R 1250 RT desires the roads, and perhaps those roads didn't dare match it with such a temperament.

A very nice machine, but the price is still too high for my taste, but the prestige of this bike is there for all to see. Rating : 5/5
La RT, une valeur sûre
After 2 Pan European and BMW R1150RT, GS 1200, R1200RT; R1200 GSA and K1600 GTL; I wanted to find the best compromise. The K1600 is fabulous with its supple, elastic and strong engine; but it's very heavy and not at ease on mountain roads. The R12500RT with its new power (136 hp) makes it more alert and maneuverable. A brand loyalist. Rating : 5/5
10 mois avec ma R1250RT option 719
French Joel T Model 2019
I'm also 168cm tall and getting a bit old. Basic normal saddle in low position.
Now, engine on "dynamic" and chassis on "road" in town (or chassis on "dynamic" depending on my mood and the nature of the road). I recommend the chassis on "dynamic" on twisty roads to get a better feel for the road
Well, no worries except at the beginning for my 1st boxer (weight when maneuvering with engine off and twin-cylinder). I had a 4-cylinder sports car before. I had to decipher the operating instructions live
What can I say? Nothing but happiness so far... Power is good, but torque is even better... And great handling once the wheels start turning
I have the Option 719 + the three packs + battery charger + GPS + Akrapovic pot + all options and accessories (except additional lights) and even the stainless steel cylinder head covers (available since September 2019)

13 months now since I replaced the 2015 1200 RTlc with this 1250
What a pleasure, with an engine that's now fully matured, an even better chassis and suspension management, and that's saying a lot
Solo and in duo, the result is fabulous. For me, it's the most accomplished grand touring bike of all makes and models...

Good bike, after 3 years with the 1200, I'm now waiting for the 1250; I make the Calvados/Lot & Garonne trip quite often and the 640 kms as a duo are done without tiring. My main complaint is the price and the lack of colors, in my opinion. I had a Black Carbon Metallic priced at €155 in 2016. 2019 model, more than 400 €, even if this year it comes with a few more "chrome" bezels !!! Likewise, the HSC now included as standard was previously part of a Pack which has not seen its price drop as a result !!!! Unfortunately, the success of their models proves them right
Good luck to all.

Sacré engin !
French Papygaz34 Model 2019
After a hundred motorcycles in 50 years of riding, a dozen BMWs including RT 1150, 1200 2004 and 2008...GS 1200...the 1250 RT 2019 represents for me the quintessence of a motorcycle that can do it all...and do it really well: touring with the nose to the wind, alone or in pairs, on the freeway when you need to (yuck), and even arsouille (yes, 10 years of French Rally Championship and 7 Moto tours...it still gets me...). Depending on your mood, it adapts and gives you the pleasure you ask for...a truly extraordinary machine!
PS I don't have any BMW shares!

Que vaut la radio sur cette 1250?
French samben Model 2019
Hello everyone,

Owner of an Electra glide limited that I'm starting to find a bit heavy for me, I'd like to switch to an RT. However, I'm wondering about the quality of the radio at cruising speed, as I'm too used to riding to music :). Could an owner tell me what it's worth compared to an HD. Thanks for your help.

R 1250 RT / La radio ne fonctionne pas
French Gutty Model 2019
At the age of 56, I'm getting back into motorcycling, which I'd had to give up for 16 years (I'd had more than 20 years of assiduous and intensive motorcycling experience before that).
So, with my 1.70m height, I was a little apprehensive at the idea of manoeuvring this imposing R 1250 RT at a standstill and at low speed, and while it's true that it's impressive, finally, after 1 1/2 months of use, I've got the hang of it!
In use, it's really a great machine (even if I'm still not being clever when I park it, for example, I'm just being careful and so far so good).
We mostly ride as a duo, and even with luggage, the weight doesn't make itself felt. Wind and rain protection are really effective (even with a little rain, especially in the "high bubble" position, no need to put on rain gear, for example).
We can ride 500 km in a day, arriving fresh as a daisy, which is really appreciable, and what we were looking for when we bought this bike (you'll see, as we get older...).
I have just one drawback with one of BMW's options (obviously expensive like all the others, but when you pay and get what you pay for, it's worth it, which isn't the case with this one): the radio, connected to our 2 helmets (BMW) via BlueTooth. When I'm alone on the bike, the radio works fine (except when we're using the GPS, which slows down reconnection after GPS voice messages interrupt the radio, but it's still OK...). But when there are 2 of us, connected "intercom" via BlueTooth with our 2 helmets, the radio doesn't work at all, even in town or at very low speeds! The radio is cut off permanently (operating times of less than 3 seconds, and after these 3 seconds, reconnection to the radio is very slow). In other words, this BlueTooth duo radio option is unusable! You never hear the radio, but only 1 to 3 second intervals interrupted by long pauses! I've already reported this BMW quality flaw orally and in writing (in the BMW surveys "Your opinion matters to us") 3 times, but so far I haven't heard anything back from my dealer or BMW Motorrad France. What a shame!
Apart from the fact that the 2 cylinder-head protectors I originally ordered have still not been delivered/installed (BMW is out of stock, I'm told), I'm not sure what to do. i only learned of this on the day of delivery of my bike, which was itself delayed by 2 days, costing me 2 days' insurance for nothing). I'm very happy with my purchase, and we're already planning many trips on this superb, pleasant and comfortable machine.
It's a pity that incidents such as those described above mar the quality of my "customer experience". As for their late delivery and the undelivered (but already paid for...) cylinder head covers, I'm not going to hate them till the end of time, because I consider that this can happen in business... let's just see now if they deliver the head covers quickly, because I'm still waiting for them... But I'm not so keen on the BlueTooth radio, which doesn't work as a duo, especially at the price charged for this option. The dealer told me verbally that he had already received complaints about the radio not working on the R 1250 RT, and that this had never happened with previous models (1200 RT, etc.). If my dealer and BMW persist in their silence about my complaint, I will write to them by registered mail as I should.
I think it's a pity it's come to this, as it upsets the overall impression, which was very good, both in terms of product quality and service, and it spoils the satisfaction I (and my passenger too!) feel at having taken up motorcycling on such a bike, which is a real pleasure to ride!

Trop lourde maintenant..
French pierre dupuis Model 2019
The old one weighed 255kg, compared with 280 for the FJR, and I chose the BMW, which is much better for small maneuvers (I'm not tall). But this one is 280, just like the FJR. The FJR has a better engine, better transmission, better reliability, great comfort on all roads, and is easy to maintain. The Yamaha consumes more... but the BMW's price resets this argument to zero. If I had to make c.... to power a big etron, I'd take the yam ;-) Rating : 4/5
Quand on a pas le choix..
French jeanphy71 Model 2019
It's far from being the best of the road. It's fairly light, the seat can be very low, stability at very low speeds is exceptional, and the range is fabulous (600km if it's quiet). On the minus side, it saunters, trajectories aren't perfect, the engine isn't velvety, comfort isn't top-notch, the gearbox still seems archaic (klong klang), reliability is average, and maintenance is restrictive and expensive. If you're looking for comfort, or engine feel, or top-notch reliability, or a cheap car, there's better. As I'm not tall, I have no choice. Rating : 3/5
French Fender 1948 Model 2019
owner of a 1200 rt from 2016 and measuring only a small metre 68 ….still perched too high despite a planing of the seat and a very slight lowering of the suspension…. I note with sadness that BMW has made no effort for people of (well) average height on its new model

So despite its modernism, I wouldn't be a customer for a 2019
Rating : 3/5
French Bibi
Slt Fender , Excuse me but if despite the planing of your saddle and the lowering of your suspensions it's still too much for your 1.68 m , I think it's more the width of the bike's saddle ( between legs ) that's causing you problems and not the height ! BMW can't manufacture custom bikes for special cases! No manufacturer does! Then how will the big guys do it? It's up to you to choose a bike that's more suited to your rather outsized build (for a man)! V Rating : 5/5

I too am 1m68 tall and have been riding an 1150rt for 8 years without any problems. I've ordered the 1250rt and I'll have it in April \"After I've tried it I'll see a comment \"
For the stop I do not put the 2 feet on the ground and for the long journey I raise the saddle to the max and it is the saddle with height of origin here is why I do not understand your problem bibi the good road has you
