presentation of the 851 SP2 1990
the 851 "limited" SP2 is, in a nutshell, an over-the-counter competition machine for open road use. Produced in a run of 2 x 200 units, this sharpened version of the standard 851 differs greatly from the normal version and little from the racing version. Yet at first glance, it's hard not to confuse it with the "basic" version. From the outside, and if you pay close attention, the changes you'll notice are the new inverted fork from equipment supplier Öhlins inverted forks, a new front mudguard, Brembo Racing brakes, different mufflers, a carbon rear mudguard and an identification plate inlaid on the fork crown. On the suspension side, the entire package is entrusted to Öhlins, with adjustments galore.
The most important change is the increase in displacement. With 2 mm more bore, the 888 cm3 twin now develops 120 hp. For this type of engine, this figure demands more than respect. The intake, pistons, valve train and other features all contribute to this spectacular increase in power. The oil cooler has also been upgraded.
while the rider's position is the same as on the standard 851, the ride is much more rigorous. The suspension work is remarkable, making the SP2 even more efficient. It also makes you feel more confident on rough roads. These suspensions are really great! It's just a pity that its long-standing flaw persists: the front axle is too light at high speeds and under hard acceleration. Homogeneous, highly efficient and a little firm to ride, the machine takes full advantage of its chassis, but you don't really feel the extra horsepower. This is due to the modified gear ratios (longer). Having said that, there's still plenty of torque and a nice punch between 7,000 and 10,500 rpm. After that, it's the injection cut-off that calms you down. That is, if it's possible to stay calm on a bike that offers so much pleasure and so much charm.
