presentation of the 250 SX-F 2013
for 8 years now, the KTM 250 SX-F has been a sure bet in the MX2 World Championship. And the new generation features an all-new, even lighter engine and improved fuel injection system. All in all, a real performance powerhouse that will redefine the MX2 class. With a new frame and fairing, the new 2013 KTM 250 SX-F is a bike built for victory that will dominate the MX2 class.
engine
A completely new architecture, with no kick starter and a new die-cast crankcase. Why all this? To reduce weight. What's more, a new, resilient and highly resistant aluminum alloy protects the engine of the 2013 KTM 250 SX-F from damage.
cylinder head and pistons
The bore/stroke ratio of the 2013 KTM 250 SX-F has been slightly reduced to increase peak power. The new cylinder now has a 78 mm bore (previously 76 mm) to accommodate larger valves. The forged piston (boxed design) is lighter despite its larger diameter. This reduces moving masses, enabling higher revs and more power.
balanced shaft
The aim was to reduce vibrations despite higher rpm. This is why the new KTM 250 SX-F engine also features a side-mounted balancer shaft, which also serves as a drive sprocket for the timing chain and water pump.
new fuel injection
Keihin's Engine Management System with electronic fuel injection has been significantly improved on the 2013 KTM 250 SX-F. Optimized air supply via a new throttle body with a 44 mm passage instead of 42 mm, and new injectors further boost performance. The throttle position sensor (TPS) is more resistant to damage and features plastic protection against stone-throwing. Connectors are now protected against steam by rubber grommets. The cable harness has been simplified and the quality of cables and connectors optimized. What's more, an optional Map-Select-Switch makes it possible to activate various additional engine features at the touch of a button on the handlebars.
cylinder head
Read on if you want to know what a champion transmission is. The heart of the new DOHC engine is the new cylinder head with two camshafts on top and DLC-coated rocker arms that operate titanium valves. Optimized flow channels and enlarged intake valves (32.5 mm intake, 26.5 mm exhaust) offer 10% more gas flow and significantly improved performance. The camshafts of the 2013 250 SX-F have also been redesigned (new timing diagrams, longer stroke), to significantly increase power at high revs (max. 14,000 rpm instead of 13,400 rpm) compared to the previous model.
weight
A state-of-the-art frame design in lightweight, high-strength chromium-molybdenum profiled tubing ensures the perfect blend of longitudinal and torsional rigidity. This not only ensures good handling and precise steering, but also excellent riding stability. The four-stroke frames on the 2013 models feature a stiffer frame triangle and thinner-walled tubes. This improves stability (increased torsional strength) while reducing weight. Optimization has also focused on the engine-head mountings and their connection to the frame. The frames of the KTM 250 SX-F have a new color and remain a benchmark in terms of weight and stability.
fork
The 48 mm inverted fork with closed cartridge has been further improved, with fully optimized adjustment and a new oil specification for perfect harmonization with the new frames and engines. The new oil is much more resistant to wear, and guarantees more consistent damping over both the stroke and life cycle. The new lower fork crown is 80 g lighter, and like the upper fork crown, has been CNC-milled from high-quality aluminum to significantly improve the fork's damping and response characteristics.
shock absorber
The WP Monoshock shock absorber has been further improved and now features, together with the KTM steering system, a completely redesigned setup for optimized damping, improved grip and even more reserves against shocks. Of course, the rebound/compression damping (High and Low speed) can be adjusted in a jiffy to suit the rider and the track.
wheels
Lightweight CNC-machined hubs, top-of-the-range EXCEL rims and new black-coated spokes with lightweight aluminum nipples ensure minimum weight and maximum stability. Pirelli Scorpion tires (MX Mid Soft 32) are synonymous with griptraction and guaranteed performance. The KTM 250 SX-F's rear wheel features a 20 mm to 25 mm reinforced axle for added stability.
bodywork
The completely redesigned fairing makes it clear - and not just from an aesthetic point of view - that the 2013 model represents a completely new generation of SX. In particular, the ergonomics and functionality of the new plastics are designed so that the chassis and engine as a whole form a whole, down to the smallest detail, in perfect harmony with the rider. The fuel tank and deflectors have been given a new look, as have the airbox and front mudguard covers, including the plate. The front mudguard, for example, no longer has any ribs on the inside to prevent mud accumulation. This innovative structure, combined with improved attachment of the mudguard to the fork crown, increases lateral torsional resistance by up to 50%.
